Match Facts
This will be the first meeting between Bayer Leverkusen and RB Salzburg, as well as Leverkusen’s first match against an Austrian opponent in the UEFA Champions League.
Bayer Leverkusen have never lost to Austrian opposition in Europe, winning three of their five total matches (D2). However, this will be their first such match since the 2012-13 campaign, when they beat SK Rapid twice in the UEFA Europa League group stage (4-0 away and 3-0 at home).
Since the start of last season, no team has won more games in major European competition than Bayer Leverkusen (11, excluding qualifiers), while only Liverpool (39) and Manchester City (38) have scored more than Xabi Alonso’s side (37) in this period.
RB Salzburg won their previous game in the UEFA Champions League (3-1 v Feyenoord), ending an eight-match winless run in the competition (D1 L7). They’ve only won back-to-back games in the Champions League on one previous occasion, beating Lille 2-1 and Wolfsburg 3-1 in September/October 2021.
Since the start of the 2023-24 campaign, Bayer Leverkusen have won six of their seven home matches in major European competition (D1). In this period, only Liverpool at Anfield (+18) have outscored their opponents by a bigger margin than Leverkusen at the BayArena (+16 – 22 goals scored, six conceded).
The average age of RB Salzburg’s starting XI in the UEFA Champions League this season is 22 years and 223 days; the youngest of any team. The oldest outfield player to feature for them in the competition this term is 26-year-old Nicolás Capaldo.
Florian Wirtz has netted 15 goals in 37 appearances in major European club competition (excluding qualifiers); the second-most of any Bayer Leverkusen player in the club’s history, only behind Ulf Kirsten (30 goals in 50 appearances).
RB Salzburg’s Oscar Gloukh has carried the ball further than any other player in the UEFA Champions League this season (1144.3 metres), while he’s the only player in the 2024-25 edition to have assisted multiple goals following a carry this term (2 – carry: moving 5+ metres with ball).
Florian Wirtz has scored three goals in four appearances for Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League this season. Only one German player has ever scored more in a single season in the competition while aged 21 or younger: Lars Ricken for Borussia Dortmund in 1996-97 (4).
Among players to have made 30+ carries in the UEFA Champions League this season, Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong has the highest average carry progress in the tournament (11.7 metres upfield per carry).
