  2. 'Henderson and Burn included for similar reasons'published at 10:32 Greenwich Mean Time

    England

Here's a bit more from Thomas Tuchel, on the inclusion of Jordan Henderson: "His career and the way he plays now, imposing himself at Ajax, is just so impressive. He builds it on character, personality and energy he brings to the team. For me Jordan is similar call-up reasons to Dan Burn. They carry these values on their shoulders. They carry their teams."

And on Chelsea's Reece James: "Reece works very hard to be in shape, the point about him he does not play so regularly lately but it is due to the managing of his previous injury. He is fully available, we double and triple checked with him personally and with the club and medical department. There is no doubt about Reece, his quality and capability, what he can bring to us.

"As you all know we want to be flexible and we want to have a bit of a wider range."

  3. Analysis: 'It appears Tuchel has decided you don't win anything with kids'published at 10:27 Greenwich Mean Time

    Sami Mokbel
    Senior football correspondent

Behind the scenes, Thomas Tuchel showed some intention to go with youth for England’s new era.

For instance, Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey had made Tuchel’s long list ahead of the World Cup qualifiers versus Latvia and Albania.

Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is fit again after groin surgery. Morgan Gibbs-White is performing well for high-flying Nottingham Forest.

In attack, Liam Delap was notified of his possible selection. Callum Hudson-Odoi is probably playing some of the best football of his career. Ethan Nwaneri is a star in the making, his performances for Arsenal raising calls for the teenager to be fast-tracked into the senior squad.

Instead, Jordan Henderson, a 34-year-old now plying his trade in the Dutch top-flight, is selected ahead of Ramsey, Wharton and Gibbs-White. Henderson is currently not a regular starter at Ajax.

Rashford, who has started one Premier League game since his loan to Aston Villa from Manchester United, is back in the fold ahead of Delap, Hudson-Odoi and Nwaneri.

Tuchel was parachuted in with a clear remit: win World Cup 2026. It appears he has decided you don’t win anything with kids.

  4. Tuchel's 'impressive phone call' with Burnpublished at 10:23 Greenwich Mean Time

    England

On what conversations he has had with Dan Burn and Myles Lewis-Skelly, Thomas Tuchel said: "It is always a nice phone call or message [to tell them they are in a squad]. Myles skipped the U21s, which would usually be a regular pathway for him but due to injuries and flexibility that we want to have in our squad and his capability, quality and game time recently he deserved to be with us.

"With Dan I have spoken, it was a very impressive phone call. Very impressive messages which made me very comfortable in this call-up that we will pick a top team players that will help us to build the right team."

Eddie Howe described Dan Burn as "an inspiring guy", I've heard Jordan Henderson described similarly in the past. Perhaps Thomas Tuchel has selected them both for off the pitch reasons. There's a lot more to modern day football than just kicking a pig's bladder around.

    Richard

I think it’s a case that Tuchel sees Henderson as a leader within the dressing room and will use vast experience to unify and galvanise the squad.

    Terry, Hammersmith

Here's a wild idea: maybe, as this is his first England squad, Tuchel wants the experience of Henderson and Walker to help him bed in and get the rest of the team onside. Here's another wild idea: maybe we should give Champions League winner Thomas Tuchel the benefit of the doubt.

  6. 'Burn has been a little overlooked' - Tuchelpublished at 10:17 Greenwich Mean Time

    England

Here's England manager Thomas Tuchel on the two players who have received their first call-ups, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Dan Burn: "Very different pathway to their first call-ups. We accelerate Myles' career again which is already on a fast track in the last [few] months. He is a regular starter for Arsenal, at the moment the second strongest team in the Premier League. He is nothing but impressive.

"Dan is maybe a little bit overlooked. A very impressive career, a very solid player. He plays regularly for Newcastle, for a Champions League club. He is a leader, he is a very solid defender. Very different path into the England squad but we are happy to have both of them. I am happy and excited to get to know them and hopefully they can prove us right."

  8. Analysis: Defensive choices hint at three-at-the-back formationpublished at 10:12 Greenwich Mean Time

With Burn, Colwill, Guehi, Konsa, Quansah, plus the option of Walker, that is six centre-backs in the squad.

That suggests that Tuchel may be planning to play three centre-backs in a 3-4-2-1 formation he has used before.

Chelsea have agreed a deal in principle to sign Sporting winger Geovany Quenda.

The 17-year-old is expected to sign a seven-year deal at Stamford Bridge with an option for an extra season after a fee of about £40m was agreed.

Chelsea have a host of options on both flanks but believe Quenda, who will not join the club until 2026, is versatile enough to play on either side and can beat defenders in one-on-one duels.

The Portugal Under-21 international has scored two goals and has eight assists in 43 matches since breaking through into the first team at Sporting.

The youngster had been linked with a move to Manchester United to reunite with his former manager Ruben Amorim.

  10. Analysis: Henderson benefitting from Mainoo absence?published at 10:07 Greenwich Mean Time

    Dan Roan
    BBC sports editor

Jordan Henderson has been in good form for Ajax but he may also be a beneficiary of Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo’s injury absence.

Mainoo - one of England's stand-out performers at Euro 2024 - has now missed the last three national squads with injury in an interrupted season.

Tuchel may also feel his options are limited in central midfield. But one wonders what the likes of Wharton, Gallagher and Gomes make of it.

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has just sat down to chat to the media before Sunday's Carabao Cup final against Newcastle.

And he has confirmed Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is not included in Thomas Tuchel's first England squad, will miss the final with injury.

Slot says he hopes the defender can be back before the end of the season.

  12. Henderson can be 'big piece in the puzzle'published at 10:00 Greenwich Mean Time

Speaking to England's in-house media, Thomas Tuchel says he believes Jordan Henderson can be "a big piece in the puzzle" as he seeks to build his new England team.

Although it feels like a pretty bizarre and regressive squad, let's give TT the benefit of the doubt before piling on before a ball has even been kicked. It's not a world cup squad and for all we know, senior players such as Walker and Jordan Henderson may be for talks trying to build a picture of how things worked in the camp in the last few years. Maybe the hope is that Jones can learn something from Henderson, a successful senior ex-Liverpool midfielder? I'd love to see Anderson/Wharton in there. But let's save the judgements for the tournament squads and performances.

So Conor Gallagher is good enough to start and score against Real Madrid but doesn't get in the England squad, but Jordan Henderson does...

    Max, Maidstone

I'm a Liverpool supporter but Henderson has had his time? Why not Connor Gallagher? Similar but younger. And Walker? Disappointing first squad.

Henderson over Gibbs-White or Gallagher, really?

Initially I was with everyone else questioning the Henderson inclusion but if you look at the squad, where are the deep midfielders? It's very attacking and we lack 8s and 6s. The sad reality is Jordan might still be the best we have.

    Ollie

Jordan Henderson is currently leading Ajax to Dutch league title, that’s experience and leadership you can’t buy. He is not the future, but he can definitely help England for the next 18 months. Plenty of time for the others to show they should be in the squad.

    Marc, Essex

Liverpool fans know how important Jordan Henderson can be. He angered a lot of fans with his move to Saudi but he will marshall the England midfield well.

Great squad for defenders and forwards, but midfield is bizarre. Why do we have such a problem in England with selecting three solid midfielders for a match? Of the 7 named in midfield, 4 of these are no 10s or attacking midfielders. The remaining three comprise of Henderson, who 88% of BBC Sport readers think shouldn’t be there. Then it’s Rice and Jones. Both are great, but it’s thin coverage for a position which control of this area wins tournaments. Every other major team can name their three in midfield. For Portugal they have João Neves, Vitinha and Bruno Fernandes, but untold strength in depth for replacements. For France it’s Tchouameni, Camavinga, Rabiot or Griezmann. We are going to get monstered at the business end of tournaments if we can’t identify more players who can control the ball in midfield and keep possession.
