    BBC Sounds

Former Brighton striker Glenn Murray on the Football Daily podcast: "When he [Anthony Gordon] said Alexander Isak is the best striker in Europe at the moment and we quickly named a few people and do you know what? It's the first time I've heard it but he might be right."

Former England striker Dion Dublin: "I'm with Anthony Gordon as well, who are you going to pick right now? If you've got a number nine shirt who are you going to give it to? You're going to give it to him [Isak]."

Portsmouth won the FA Cup in 1939 in the last final before the Second World War. They were therefore holders for seven years until it was played for again in 1946.

    Alan in Herts

Pompey won the FA Cup in 1939 just before World War 2 and then the FA Cup was halted for the duration of the war. Hence, they are the longest holders of the FA Cup.

Easy - Pompey held it for seven years due to the Second World War.

  5. Isak 'getting better under Eddie Howe'published at 10:23 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January

    FT: Arsenal 0-2 Newcastle

    John Murray
BBC Radio 5 Live chief football correspondent on the Football Daily podcast

I would say as an observer, he [Alexander Isak] is a better player now. I think he's got more about him. He's playing with the confidence. He's so mobile, 25 goals last season which was the most he's scored for any of his teams in a season that was in all competitions.

This season now, that's 15 and I wondered last season 'is he a player capable of scoring 30+ goals in a season?'. Looking at him tonight, he does look like a player capable of doing that and also you have to throw a bit of credit Eddie Howe's way.

We talk about good managers being able to improve players and make them better and to my eye, he is getting better under Eddie Howe.

  6. 'Arsenal don't have that player to look to'published at 10:22 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January

    FT: Arsenal 0-2 Newcastle

    Dion Dublin
Former England striker on the Football Daily podcast

Arsenal are getting so close. If you have a player like a centre-forward that is going to score you a lot of goals, you look to him to do something. Newcastle are looking to Isak and he's rewarding them. Arsenal don't have that player to look to. Like we said before, everyone has to contribute, if everybody doesn't contribute, they will struggle.

Arsenal boss Mikel ArtetaImage source, Getty Images

Yeah they do [Arsenal need to find a way to solve their issues in the second leg] and it falls on Mikel Arteta and that falls on the training field. They're a top quality group of individuals and they do play as a team, they've shown they're a team over the recent seasons.

They will find a way but it's just a shame for them that the demise of Manchester City and they've pushed them so hard for two seasons running and when City fall away, they haven't quite been there to just clean up after them.

  12. 'To get beaten like that on your own turf is shameful'published at 10:08 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January

    FT: Arsenal 0-2 Newcastle

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

Arsenal fan Laura Kirk speaking about the defeat to Newcastle: “Last night was much the same as Arsenal have been for the last couple of weeks.

"If you look at the stats, on paper, we were relatively dominant, but we are missing chances left right and centre. Last night Newcastle were absolutely up for it and they played it like the semi-final it was.

"Arsenal just look exhausted. They look defeated. To get beaten like that on your own turf is shameful.

"What Areteta is dealing with at the moment is a lot of injuries but a lot of players who are dropping their standards."

Wolves winning the Texaco Cup in 1971, beating Hearts over a two legged final was the first (and only!!!) trophy win I got to attend despite supporting them all my life. Heady days and guess the 'electric charging point' cup doesn't have quite the same ring to it!

Are we really going to ignore the fact that Newcastle won the Sela Cup pre-season? Serial trophy winners right here.

Disappointed that nobody is showing us the respect we deserve as the only ever two time winners of the coveted Sela Cup. You'll never sing that!

  14. 'Deflection, that's what Arteta is doing'published at 10:02 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January

    FT: Arsenal 0-2 Newcastle

    Lee Dixon
Former Arsenal defender on 5 Live Breakfast

Former Arsenal defender Lee Dixon speaking to 5 Live Breakfast about Mikel Arteta blaming the ball for the Gunners' struggles in front of goal...

"Deflection. That’s what Mikel Arteta is doing. There is something in that but I don’t want to make excuses because Newcastle last night were absolutely sparkling.

"It was a really top class performance. They did a job on Arsenal and Arsenal didn’t have any answers.

"Last night was a real feather in Eddie Howe's cap based on how he set the team up.

"And Alexander Isak – I’ve not seen Gabriel and William Saliba that uncomfortable since they started the partnership and I consider those two the best centre backs in the league but last night they looked all over the place and that’s because of Isak. He’s such a difficult player to tie down."

Henry in the 95th minute, incredible scenes.

Allow me one rebuttal to Didier. Brighton are the only team to have won the Shield, having never won an FA Cup or the league. While Arsenal did win it in 2023 without winning anything that season, they have previously qualified for the match by winning the cup and/or the League. Thank you and goodnight

    West Ham United

From Simon Stone and Nizaar Kinsella:

Former AC Milan boss Paulo Fonseca and current coach of Saudi Pro-League club Al Duhail Christophe Galtier have both been spoken to by West Ham.

However the belief from both camps is that Graham Potter will get the job.

A reminder that Julen Lopetegui is still officially in charge at West Ham, although that is expected to change soon.
