It's true to say Newcastle have not won a major domestic trophy since 1955. But don't take away our scant success by opening a non-debate about whether the Fairs Cup was major or not. Never have I heard this discussed in 35 years as a Newcastle fan.
VB, Whitley Bay.
Firstly the Inter Cities Fairs Cup WAS a major trophy ranked third in European Football behind the European Cup and the Cup Winners Cup. Secondly, as a Rangers supporter I was at the Newcastle Utd game in the Fairs Cup semi in 1969 and wish them the best in their quest for the League Cup

Julen Lopetegui took training at Rush Green yesterday despite rumours of his imminent sacking.
However, it now looks like a different manager could be in the dug-out when the Hammers travel to Villa Park to face Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round on Friday.
West Ham have already held talks with former Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter about replacing Lopetegui, should they sack him.

West Ham getting Potter - you read it here first.

Big news at West Ham.
The club have cancelled Julen Lopetegui's press conference which was supposed to be at 13:15 GMT today.
This week, there have been growing rumours that the Hammers are to sack Lopetegui.

Inter city fairs cup was a major trophy… its still 55 years since Newcastle won it though. 70 since a domestic major trophy. Not keen on the club ownership at Newcastle but I’m a big fan of their fans so really hoping they stop that drought this season!

Teams were thrilled to be in the Fairs Cup. It was initially based on teams from cities that had trade fairs, but that was quickly replaced by League qualification - though I think you couldn’t have two teams from the same city in it. It became the UEFA Cup, one of the three European major trophies, around 1972. I think Spurs v Wolves was the first final.

Wait, have us journos been rumbled?

Can't believe Arteta has changed the narrative here from how one dimensional his side are, to ..... the ball is a bit funny.
David
Great deflection by Arteta, it's why no-one ever queries why Arsenal have only won 1 FA Cup since he became manager last decade. Everyone is discussing the daft ball comment. Well done journos for letting him, again, avoid tricky questions and set the narrative.
Robert
No nastiness intended, it's just every article I read about the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup seems to suggest that clubs didn't really want to be in it.
Or was that a mid-2000s thing?

If the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup wasn't a major trophy, you better tell Leeds, Arsenal, Barcelona and others to take it off their roll of honour. It obviously pains a lot of people to see Newcastle doing well so they seek to belittle us. It doesn't work. A bit like blaming the ball for losing....

The Inter-Cities Fairs Cup is a major trophy. Forerunner of the UEFA Cup and then the Europa League.

We brought you the news a short time ago that Didier Deschamps is leaving as France coach after the 2026 World Cup.
His record is quite sublime.
Since taking the position in 2012, Deschamps managed a staggering 165 wins, 31 draws and just 28 losses.
There's also the small matter of leading the side to World Cup glory in 2018.
The 56-year-old also claimed the 2021 Nations League title with Les Bleus before taking the team back to the World Cup final in 2022 - only to lose out to Argentina on penalties.

Arteta is channelling late stage Wenger with his excuses.

Are Arsenal getting a bit Spursy?

Here's the certificate. Reminds me of my 5m swimming badge.
Also, older viewers, what's the Texaco Cup?
Of course, silly me for forgetting.
I meant to say no major trophy for Newcastle since 1955. The club have won the Anglo-Italian Cup, Intertoto Cup, Texaco Cup (twice), Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the second tier (thrice) since then.

Are we forgetting the Intertoto Cup that Newcastle won? They got a cracking certificate for it, apparently...

Didier Deschamps confirmed to French television network TF1 that he would leave his role as France boss following the 2026 World Cup.
"In 2026 it will be over," he said.
"In my head it's very clear. I've done my time, with the same desire and passion to maintain France at the highest level but 2026 is a very good [time to stop].
"One has to be able to say stop, there's a life after this. The most important is for France to stay at the top as they have been for many years."
