The leaders win and the bottom sides lose - that tends to be how football works and today Wycombe and Walsall continued their respective progress at the top of Leagues One and Two.

Wycombe's 4-1 demolition of basement dwellers Shrewsbury keeps them out ahead of Birmingham and Wrexham.

For Shrewsbury it's now 10 points from safety while Bristol Rovers have dropped to within two points of the relegation zone.

Walsall's 1-0 victory over Barrow makes it 10 league games unbeaten and they are now four points clear at the top.

Carlisle, Morecambe and Swindon all lost as the dogfight to stay in the EFL gets ever tighter.

We are back with live coverage of two juicy Championship matches tomorrow afternoon as Watford host West Brom (14:00 GMT) and Burnley head to Norwich (15:00).

Then there is some League Two action on Monday evening as Fleetwood face Accrington (20:00).

Morecambe, Carlisle and Swindon Town all missed their chances to move out of the bottom three.

Tranmere Rovers' win over Harrogate Town carries extra sting as they overtake their opponents in the table with Accrington Stanley also dropping - though the Reds have the chance to crawl back up against Fleetwood on Monday.

Newport County's draw with Colchester sees them move up a place to 16th but the Cod Army could go as high as 14th with victory against Accrington.

  3. Walsall extend lead at summitpublished at 17:29 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December

A good day for Walsall who widen the gap between themselves and Port Vale to four points after the Saddlers picked up a 1-0 home win against Barrow and Vale drew 0-0 at Bromley.

That win means that Mat Sadler's side are now on a 10-game unbeaten run.

It was also a big win for Crewe who overcame Grimsby 2-0 to move into third.

Doncaster relinquished that third-placed spot to drop to fifth after they lost 1-0 at AFC Wimbledon.

Chesterfield moved into the play-off positions following their win at Carlisle while MK Dons drop out of those places after their home defeat against Gillingham ended their hopes of a seventh league win in a row.

Shrewsbury's home thrashing by Wycombe leaves them a distant 10 points from safety while Burton Albion and Cambridge United earned draws on the road.

Crawley lost a seven goal thriller at Peterborough despite coming from 2-0 and 3-1 behind.

Bristol Rovers are now looking nervously over their shoulders as their loss at Birmingham made it three successive defeats with a home game against Wrexham coming next.

Wycombe stay top by one point but Birmingham take over as their chief pursuers as their win over Bristol Rovers and Wrexham's draw means those two swap places.

Huddersfield came from 2-0 down to get a point against Lincoln while Stockport fell to a surprise loss at Stevenage.

Reading stay sixth but Blackpool's 3-0 win in Berkshire gets them into the top 10.

Barnsley's come-from-behind win at Exeter shifts them up to seventh place above Bolton who lost to Wigan earlier.

  7. 'Plenty to cheer about for Blues'published at 17:21 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December

FT: Birmingham City 2-0 Bristol Rovers

    Marc Webber
    Final Score

The natives were nervous at times in this game; perhaps some expected a cricket score against Bristol Rovers.

But whilst they missed more chances to score, Birmingham City had plenty to cheer about in this game, including a first club goal for Lee Buchanan, who was out through injury for over 200 days before his EFL Trophy return last week.

Bristol Rovers frustrated them at times, but this will be a frustrating time for them too, as they struggled to get any threat on the final ball and are now just above the relegation zone.

  10. 'Shrewsbury showed zero quality'published at 16:56 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December

    FT: Shrewsbury 1-4 Wycombe

    Adam Green
    BBC Radio Shropshire

Sometimes you play the league leaders and they absolutely thrash you, but today they didn't even need to try.

Shrewsbury showed zero quality, and never strung five passes together.

Honestly, it's worrying to see and there's no way they stay in the league like this.

  11. FULL-TIMEpublished at 16:55 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December

    Birmingham 2-0 Bristol Rovers

A better second half from the Gas can't measure up to a dominating Blues side who win a third league game in a row and stay in contention for the top.

Bristol Rovers registered just the one shot on target with the home side tallying up eight with over eight times the amount of attempts.

It means it's a third goalless loss for Matt Taylor's side, who next face another challenging task of hosting Wrexham.

But for Birmingham, they are back in an automatic promotion spot and cruising their way back to the Championship if this form continues.

  12. FULL-TIMEpublished at 16:54 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December

    Wrexham 2-2 Cambridge United

An excellent point for Cambridge United.

Wrexham might see that as a point gained against a spirited Cambridge United side.

Elias Kachunga gave the visitors the lead before goals from James McClean and Steven Fletcher turned things around.

Lewis Brunt then brought down Sulley Kaikai with two minutes to go and Dan Nlundulu converted the penalty for a well deserved draw on the road.

  13. FULL-TIMEpublished at 16:53 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December

    Shrewsbury 1-4 Wycombe

From the moment Beryly Lubala nodded Wycombe in front after 15 minutes this was never in doubt.

Caleb Taylor added a second on the stroke of half-time with his first goal for the club and Fred Onyedinma's header made it safe.

Jordan Shipley struck a nice free-kick in response but when Wycombe promptly went up the other end and saw Daniel Udoh make it 4-1 the gap between top and bottom was plain to see.

  14. 'Ainsworth achieved so much with Wycombe'published at 16:53 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December

    Shrewsbury 1-4 Wycombe

    Stuart Dunn
    Commentator on BBC Radio Shropshire

Gareth Ainsworth is having a word with his staff now, with whom he achieved so much in charge at Wycombe.

Today he's been the opposition, and beaten.

    AFC Wimbledon 1-0 Doncaster

Matty Steven's fifth goal in six games is enough at the Cherry Red Records Stadium as AFC Wimbledon pick up the win to end their previous run of no wins in their past four games at home.

The Dons move up to fourth in the table.

Doncaster miss the chance to make it 10 games unbeaten and this defeat sees them drop to fifth.
