Madueke to Arsenal is a strange one; 50m+ for a squad player? It's also confusing from the player's perspective; it's a World Cup year, and he will likely be spending the majority of the season on the bench.

  3. Why are Chelsea willing to sell Madueke?published at 14:56 British Summer Time 11 July

Chelsea need to make player sales in order to comply with Uefa's rules on player trading.

Last week, the Blues were fined by Uefa due to a breach of Uefa's financial rules but have recently made big-money moves to sign Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens from Brighton and Borussia Dortmund respectively.

In terms of wingers, Chelsea have Pedro Neto, Gittens and teenager Estevao at their disposal, while Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Christopher Nkunku could all play out wide. Tyrique George is also coming through the Blues' academy and has been regularly used by Enzo Maresca in recent season.

The money Arsenal are offering to purchase Madueke for makes it a financially good option for Chelsea to sell given the competition out wide now with the signings Chelsea have made, plus the players returning to the club from loan spells.

  4. Where could Madueke play for Arsenal?published at 14:52 British Summer Time 11 July

Madueke has made the vast majority of his appearances for the Blues on the right, with 88% of his Premier League minutes coming on that flank since joining in January 2023.

His signing would, therefore, ease the burden Bukayo Saka, who has perhaps been overworked in recent seasons. Saka started 108 of 114 league matches from 2021-22 to 23-24 but missed three months of the most recent campaign with a hamstring injury. Like Saka, when Madueke features on the right wing he looks to cut inside and shoot with his favoured left foot.

Madueke actually ended last season playing on the left for Chelsea, with head coach Enzo Maresca altering his approach during the run-in.

The former PSV Eindhoven man started four of the Blues' final five Premier League matches on that flank, plus the Conference League final. He also began on the left in England's win against Andorra in June, when he was one of the Three Lions' better performers, setting up Harry Kane's winner.

So in addition to cover for Saka on the right, Madueke could provide competition for both Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard on the opposite wing, where he would offer a slightly more direct threat.

In the most recent Premier League season, Madueke attempted more shots and dribbles per 90 minutes than both Martinelli and Trossard and carried the ball significantly further.

  13. Gibbs-White's clean injury recordpublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 11 July

As well as his goal contributions, one key factor that will no doubt have piqued Tottenham's interest in Morgan Gibbs-White is his recent injury record.

Spurs suffered a disastrous run of injuries last season, a fact then manager Ange Postecoglou consistently cited as a mitigating factor for their poor results in the Premier League.

Gibbs-White, however, has not missed a game through injury since January 2021, according to Transfermarkt.

Since the start of the 2022-23 season, Gibbs-White has played in 108 out of a possible 114 Premier League matches.

New Spurs boss Thomas Frank, meanwhile, inherits a squad of players of which none started more than 28 Premier League matches last season.

Adam, London: To look at it from another angle, Rob, Levy has again spent big on two players unproven at the highest level (e.g. Champions League/top 4) in the hope of reaching the highest level. He's used this transfer strategy before (e.g. Richarlison, Madison, Solanke), and it's not exactly propelled them up the league!

  15. Gibbs-White's rise to £60m Spurs targetpublished at 13:16 British Summer Time 11 July

Morgan Gibbs-White celebratesImage source, Getty Images

Morgan Gibbs-White's career has significantly kicked on since spending the 2021-22 season in the Championship at Sheffield United, on loan from Wolves.

Gibbs-White scored 12 times in 37 appearances for the Blades and helped them reach the play-offs, where they were beaten in the semi-finals.

The England midfielder then joined Forest - the side that beat Sheffield United in the play-offs - and across the last three seasons has played 108 out of a possible 114 Premier League matches for the club.

After winning the 2023 Under-21s European Championships with England, Gibbs-White got his Three Lions chance at senior level, both under interim boss Lee Carsley and now current head coach Thomas Tuchel.

He has four England caps to his name and given the two caps he has won for the Three Lions under Tuchel, is in a good position to win a place in next year's World Cup squad, should England qualify.

  17. 'Beginning of the end' - Forest fans react to Gibbs-White newspublished at 13:00 British Summer Time 11 July

    Nottingham Forest

Max T: A completely disastrous double blow. Gibbs-White leaving rips the heart out of our team. He brings captain energy and drive. The reveal of a £60m release clause no fan was aware of has been tough to stomach and shines more light on the promotion deal we struck. It is almost impossible to replace two players like this in two windows. Not the European dawn I imagined.

Steven: What on earth are Forest thinking? First Anthony Elanga [close to £55m move to Newcastle], now Gibbs-White. Who in their right mind thinks selling these players makes Forest better? If this is confirmed, I'm done with Forest.

Max: It feels like this is the beginning of the end. Losing Elanga, and now losing Gibbs-White. I hope I am wrong, but I think we could be back in the Championship in a few years. We can't sell our biggest stars and expect to continue on an upward trajectory.

Jonathan: My player of the season is off to Newcastle and now the club's other match-winning talent is about to depart, leaving Callum Hudson-Odoi as the sole creator and finisher. Unless there is a player of similar quality about to join the squad, it is likely to be a low-scoring and challenging season.

  18. All change in Forest's attack?published at 12:52 British Summer Time 11 July

Anthony Elanga (17) and Morgan Gibbs-White (15) finished second and third respectively for most goal contributions in the Premier League for Forest last season, only behind striker Chris Wood (22).

Forest have already added to their forward line with the signing of Brazilian forward Igor Jesus from Brazilian side Botafogo for around £10m, but should Elanga and Gibbs-White depart, the expectation is that they will have to be replaced with further attacking additions.

We have spoken quite a bit today already about Tottenham and their pursuit of Morgan Gibbs-White, but what about the England midfielder's current club, Nottingham Forest?

Remember, they started the week by agreeing a £55m offer from Newcastle for key winger Anthony Elanga.

Where would Gibbs-White's expected departure leave Forest as they prepare to return to European competition since the 1995-96 season?
