TG: Carragher’s opinion on Jackson won’t be shared by those who watched him last season, or who pay attention to facts. 15 goals in his first season, followed up by a goal and a lovely assist in his last match [Chelsea's 6-2 win at Wolves]. Fans like him, and rightly so.

  2. 'Real problem when clubs are looking at Osimhen'published at 08:45 British Summer Time 30 August

    James Horncastle
European football writer on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think that was the big thing last season - can you back up what you did in the title-winning season [2022-23] under Luciano Spalletti? He didn't.

I think that is a real problem when it comes to clubs looking at him this year.

You've got a 130m euros [£110m] buyout clause, which Napoli's owner wants to get really close to, but he's probably not worth half that. That's why he still is where he is and that's why clubs that are coming to Naples at this moment to try and convince him are the Saudi clubs.

  3. Postpublished at 08:41 British Summer Time 30 August

It now seems that Chelsea's hopes of signing Victor Osimhen from Napoli are fading.

James Horncastle explains in the latest edition of the Euro Leagues podcast on BBC Sounds why the Saudi clubs are in a better position to seal a deal for the Nigeria striker...

  4. 'Another £200m spent and we still don't have a striker'published at 08:33 British Summer Time 30 August

    Chelsea fan views

Chelsea fans have also had their say on the club's transfer deadline day, including on their pursuit of Victor Osimhen.

Here's what they had to say:

Dan: Haven't we done enough? Another £200m spent and we still don't have a striker...

Eric: Loan Mudryk to Strasbourg as soon as possible and give Tyrique George a chance. It's really absurd to see Chelsea's unstable defence even after Silva's guidance. We need Tomas Araujo and perhaps a striker - Osimhen, to be precise.

Richard: It's really all about the top striker and Osimhen is the obvious choice, but only if wages are sensible. Otherwise, I'd like the club to stop buying and allow the squad to get to know each other properly. The whole 'bomb squad' situation is also messy - I wish Chilwell could be reintegrated back into the side.

Jacob: I think we still need a quality striker like Ivan Toney or Victor Osimhen and we need a quality defender too...

Nick: Boehly and Eghbali should just put their cheque book away. The club doesn't need any more players - there are enough goals in the team and spending on Osimhen or Toney would bring only a marginal gain, but at a big cost; not worth risking a PSR breach. By all means offload the surplus players but no more coming in, please.

Jamie Carragher's hopes look like they could well be dashed, with Sky Italy's Gianluca Di Marzio reporting that Victor Osimhen's proposed move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli is close to being completed, adding that "agreements [are] being defined", external.

  6. 'No doubt Chelsea need a striker'published at 08:20 British Summer Time 30 August

Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports News that he believes Victor Osimhen is the right man to lead Chelsea's attack: "No doubt they need a striker. Nicolas Jackson has clearly not worked. Osimhen has been a player linked to the Premier League for a long time. I would be delighted if he is coming - hopefully we can get to see him in the Premier League.

"But just like with Ivan Toney, he has a situation that he could go to Saudi. I can understand if heads get turned by the money on offer, but fingers crossed both Osimhen and Toney will be in the Premier League by the close of the window tonight."

  7. Chelsea locked in Osimhen talkspublished at 08:10 British Summer Time 30 August

    Nizaar Kinsella
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Chelsea remain locked in talks to sign Victor Osimhen on deadline day but Al-Ahli are rivalling them for his signature.

The Saudi Pro League club have broadly agreed terms on a deal worth around £60m that will see the Nigerian earn around £25m a season with, crucially, a release clause included in the deal for an early return to Europe.

Effectively, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) which helps fund the four biggest clubs in the Gulf have done all they can to secure Osimhen.

However, a move to Chelsea is preferred as long as they meet the terms asked by Osimhen, with wages potentially the biggest stumbling block given the new wage structure in west London.

  8. Osimhen heading to Saudi?published at 08:08 British Summer Time 30 August

    Friday's gossip column

Victor Osimhen is a striker in demand on this transfer deadline day, featuring heavily in today's BBC Sport gossip column.

According to Talksport, external, Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli are optimistic of signing Napoli's 25-year-old Nigeria frontman, dealing a blow to Chelsea's hopes of signing him.

    However...

  9. Busy Brightonpublished at 08:03 British Summer Time 30 August

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Brighton have been one of the biggest spenders of this transfer window and may not be done yet as they are looking at teenage striker Conrad Harder, who has impressed with Danish club Nordsjaelland.

Other clubs are also interested so it may not be straightforward.

And it does seem as though they will keep Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour.

Rumours about a move to Napoli have persisted this week - I had been told last week it was unlikely.

However, Thursday's news that Matt O'Riley will have surgery on an ankle injury, suffered on his debut in the EFL Cup on Tuesday, will probably rule out any move to Italy for Gilmour.

  12. Moves at Man Utd - McTominay, Sancho, Sterling?published at 07:45 British Summer Time 30 August

    Simon Stone

I am expecting Scott McTominay's move to Napoli to be confirmed today, which would allow Manuel Ugarte's switch to Manchester United from Paris St-Germain to be concluded.

The really interesting narrative is around Jadon Sancho.

Juventus are keen on the England man, as are Chelsea.

Manchester United have been keen to stress any deal will be done on their terms. But is that just posturing? And could Raheem Sterling move north from Chelsea to allow Sancho to go there.

I don't think anyone can say for certain how this is going to play out.

  13. Arsenal consider late Sterling movepublished at 07:38 British Summer Time 30 August

    Friday's gossip column

Raheem Sterling is another big-name player who may be on the move today.

According to the Independent, external, Arsenal are weighing up potential moves for Chelsea's 29-year-old English forward or Bayern Munich's French winger Kingsley Coman, 28, having been approached about both in the final two days of the transfer window.

  14. Toney situation 'fascinating'published at 07:30 British Summer Time 30 August

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter on BBC Radio 5 Live

With Ivan Toney the interesting thing for him is that he was part of the England squad at the Euros and didn't play as much as he would have liked.

He was not in the [England] squad yesterday, but that is presumably a part of the legacy that he’s not played for Brentford.

He has to work out whether, in the prime of his career, he wants to go to Saudi Arabia, which would maybe take him out of England picture at a time when there's a new coach wanting to put his own stamp on things, or whether he stays in the Premier League. If so, does he stay at Brentford and would Brentford want him to stay as well?

It is fascinating. He is one of a number of players we don't know what is going to happen with.

  15. Nothing is 'certain' on deadline daypublished at 07:23 British Summer Time 30 August

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Simon Stone, BBC Sport's chief football news reporter, has been speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast about the major stories brewing on transfer deadline day.

"I think Ivan Toney will [move this window], but nobody knows, which I think is the interesting thing about a lot of potential deals today," he said.

"Add [Chelsea's] Raheem Sterling into that, [along with his team-mate] Ben Chilwell, and you could have Jadon Sancho, Kingsley Coman, Marc Guehi, Victor Osimhen.

"All of these players are big players who would attract big transfer fees and we don’t know for certain if there's going to be moves for them at the end of the day."

  16. A domino effect or a deck of cards?published at 07:19 British Summer Time 30 August

One thing we know from previous transfer windows - deadline day in particular - is that deals are often linked.

The fortunes of Kepa Arrizabalaga and Neto is a case in point.

A big transfer can have a domino effect, with the futures of a host of different players at different clubs all interconnected.

The reverse is also true, so if a major transfer falls then others can collapse like a deck of cards.

So which way will it go today?

Well, there is a chance that Romleu Lukaku's move from Chelsea to Napoli could pave the way for Victor Osimhen to leave the Serie A club - possibly for Stamford Bridge or Al-Ahli.

Brentford's Ivan Toney has also been heavily linked with a move to Al-Ahli - should Osimhen sign for the Saudi Pro League side, where would that leave the Bees' England striker?

  17. Bournemouth keeper Neto on his way to Arsenalpublished at 07:14 British Summer Time 30 August

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto is having a medical with Arsenal this morning ahead of a loan move.

Kepa Arrizabalaga's arrival at the Cherries from Chelsea meant Bournemouth were open to doing a deal and that was agreed last night.

With Aaron Ramsdale on his way to Southampton, Neto will presumably be back up to Arsenal number one David Raya.
