  1. Full-time whistle goes - Netherlands 1-4 Englandpublished at 15:41 British Summer Time 10 July

A historic match comes to an end, historic not just for Euro 1996, but for English football history.

It ended 4-1. Will tonight's clash end in a similar fashion?

Who in the England crowd would have come here tonight hoping at this point for a fifth goal?

  3. England penalty appeal for challenge on Barmbypublished at 15:35 British Summer Time 10 July

    Netherlands 1-4 England (1996)

    VAR!

Still a subjective call 28 years on. Substitute Nicky Barmby broke through, played a one-two and got the first touch as the defender slid in.

The defender also got something on the ball but took out Barmby.

Don't forget that - for our Scottish audience following - a fifth goal for England would have sent them through into the knockout round...

Interesting that both Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham were denied the chance of scoring a hat-trick after being substituted in the second half.

As Barry Davies said in his commentary, both were on a yellow card and would have missed the Spain quarter-final if they had picked up another booking.

    Netherlands 1-4 England (1996)

    David Pleat
Former Tottenham manager on BBC Radio 5 live

I think we can expect Kluivert will become a player who will start games for Holland from now. It is an important position. You have to have bite and that is what England have had tonight.

  6. Robbie Fowler heads overpublished at 15:28 British Summer Time 10 July

Ah, one of the most natural finishers the Premier League has ever seen, yet it is hard to recall Robbie Fowler's England career.

For the record, Terry Venables gave the Liverpool striker his debut, but he made just three appearances for England in international tournaments - two at Euro 96 and one at the 2002 World Cup.

In total, 16 of his 26 international caps came in friendlies.

It might prove to be important for Holland, that goal. Didn't produce too much reaction from the Dutch supporters, though.

  8. WATCH: Kluivert bags Dutch consolationpublished at 15:28 British Summer Time 10 July

Watch this again, it's a thing of beauty.

This scorer of Netherlands consolation is - for our younger audience - the father of Bournemouth striker Justin Kluivert.

Patrick Kluivert, one of the best strikers of his generation, scored more than 200 career goals in a decorated career paying for Barcelona, Ajax, Newcastle and AC Milan.

This particular goal, just in case we need to remind you, meant Netherlands qualified ahead of Scotland on goal difference from the group stage. Historic.

  9. Netherlands pull a goal backpublished at 15:27 British Summer Time 10 July

    Netherlands 1-4 England (1996)

Despite England's control for much of this game, the Netherlands did pull a goal back through teenage substitute Patrick Kluivert.

A touch of class from Dennis Bergkamp, controlling the long pass and flicking the ball over the top to find the run of Kluivert who took his chance.

It proved to be very important for the Dutch, as that goal meant that the Netherlands qualified out of the group stage ahead of Scotland.

  10. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 10 July

    Netherlands 0-4 England (1996)

Double change for the Dutch as Ronald de Boer is replaced by Philip Cocu while exciting Ajax teenager Patrick Kluivert comes on for Peter Hoekstra.

  11. 'At times, they have been spectacular'published at 15:18 British Summer Time 10 July

    Netherlands 0-4 England (1996)

    David Pleat
Former Tottenham manager on BBC Radio 5 live

England are safe, they are sound and at times they have been spectacular.

  12. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 15:17 British Summer Time 10 July

    Netherlands 0-4 England (1996)

Terry Venables certainly had one eye on the quarter-finals as David Platt, who would go on to play for the suspended Paul Ince in the next game, was given a run out in place of the former Manchester United midfielder.

  13. 'Best England performance'published at 15:13 British Summer Time 10 July

    Netherlands 0-4 England (1996)

    Barry Davies
    BBC commentator at Wembley

This is becoming the best England performance in many a long day.

  14. WATCH: Sheringham makes it 4-0published at 15:12 British Summer Time 10 July

The crowd had already broken into an impromptu chorus of "It's Coming Home" long before Teddy Sheringham rounded off the scoring - for England at least - with his second goal of the game...

  15. Sheringham gets his second to make it 4-0published at 15:11 British Summer Time 10 July

    Netherlands 0-4 England (1996)

Just like fellow forward Alan Shearer, Teddy Sheringham got two in the famous Euro '96 clash.

He got England's fourth by reacting fastest to a spilled Darren Anderton shot to cap off a memorable England performance.

  16. Reaction from 1996published at 15:10 British Summer Time 10 July

    Netherlands 0-3 England (1996)

    David Pleat
Former Tottenham manager on BBC Radio 5 live

England have had their champagne moments, can they have any more tonight? They have done enough.

  17. Reaction at the timepublished at 15:08 British Summer Time 10 July

    Barry Davies
    BBC commentator at Wembley

It is three! And you have to say, that is magnificent.

  18. WATCH: Shearer makes it 3-0 with THAT famous strikepublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 10 July

Alan Shearer's iconic strike - with the intuitive link-up play, disguise in the pass and then smashed finish - came to represent everything that was great about Terry Venables' Euro 96 side.

  19. Shearer makes it 3-0published at 15:07 British Summer Time 10 July

    Netherlands 0-3 England (1996)

It may have happened 28 years ago, but it will still live long in the memory of England fans.

First Paul Gascgoine down the left side, passing to Teddy Sheringham, whose cool lay-off was matched with a brilliant finish from Alan Shearer.

  20. Seedorf takes long-range shotpublished at 15:04 British Summer Time 10 July

    Netherlands 0-2 England (1996)

Clarence Seedorf tried his luck from long range, but could only find the hands of David Seaman.
