David Platt, a hero of England's run to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup, came back into the team as Ince's replacement and scored one of the penalties that helped Terry Venables' side beat Spain after the last-eight tie ended 0-0 after extra time.

Brilliant penalty - placement and power but give credit to Teddy Sheringham who made the pass to set that movement away.

    Scotland scenarios Euro 96

Scotland were left relying on England to stand any chance of progressing.

If England got the win then Scotland could have had the chance to reach the knockout stages of a major competition for the first time.

They just needed to beat Switzerland by enough goals to overtake the Netherlands on goal difference.

    England Group table 96

So this is how it looked in Group A before the start of the game.

All England needed to do to guarantee progress to the knockouts was avoid defeat.

If they lost, Terry Venables' side would have still progressed, unless Switzerland beat Scotland AND scored enough goals to overtake England on goal difference.
