I am a Manchester City fan of more than 50 years, so understand the anxiety of being a supporter. The current team is, with a few exceptions, not a vintage one, so if they win any domestic honours this season they will have proved themselves. For those who have posted about not wanting to see them win the Premier League, I doubt you would be saying the same thing if your team was up for a fourth title in a row. Furthermore, for those commenting on the competitiveness of the league, I remind them that this is the closest battle in the top three in years and we [City] could end up with no domestic honours this year. Please stop whinging about City and push your own clubs to get better and challenge City.

  2. 'I don't allow myself to be influenced by it'published at 12:09 British Summer Time 26 April

Bayern Munich v Eintracht Frankfurt (Sat, 14:30 BST)

Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel says he's "only focused" on the remainder of the season after over 12,000 Bayern supporters signed a petition, external asking for him to remain at the club: "Even though this topic is good for me when they [the fans] wish you to stay, it's not something that is a priority and it isn't allowed to be a priority. In the next 11 days it's only about football, nothing else.

"We want to achieve all we can and to gather as many points as possible in the Bundesliga to get the best result and to reach the final of the Champions League.

"Whether it's pleasant or unpleasant, I don't allow myself to be influenced by it. We're only focusing on every day counting towards our goals and there's no exception."

Austria manager Ralf Rangnick, the former interim head coach at Manchester United, confirmed earlier this week that Bayern had contacted him about the manager's job.

  3. 'I think even Arsenal and City see it as a two-horse race'published at 12:05 British Summer Time 26 April

West Ham v Liverpool (Sat, 12:30 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on if his side can still be in the fight for the Premier League title: "I cannot sit here and say [Manchester and Arsenal] still feel us around. I think even Arsenal and City see it as a two-horse race. We might have to say something else publicly, but they don't expect for themselves to lose two games from now on, I don't think so.

"I don't expect them to do that. If they do it, then we would be completely silly if we were not around. So, I don't think it will happen but if it happens, then we should be there. That means we have to win our games - starting with West Ham."

  4. Liverpool may not be a 'club on a high' - Klopppublished at 12:03 British Summer Time 26 April

West Ham v Liverpool (Sat, 12:30 BST)

    Liverpool

An interesting take from Jurgen Klopp coming up.

He says if Arne Slot does take over as manager of Liverpool he will be taking charge of the "best club in the world", but it might help if he is not taking over a "club on a high", if they fail to win the Premier League this season.

As Klopp put it, he could be taking on a team that has "room for improvement".

Could the German manager be proposing a potential silver lining to the dark cloud hovering over Anfield following their recent faltering form?

  5. Klopp 'responsible for the mood in the team'published at 11:56 British Summer Time 26 April

West Ham v Liverpool (Sat, 12:30 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on how his side can recover from the Merseyside derby defeat to continue challenging in the title race: "It's definitely a challenge, but it's part of the job. I can't remember ever being as disappointed or frustrated after a game like I was after Everton.

"I've unfortunately lost a lot of games in my life, but it was special. We were not there. You see the other two (Arsenal and Manchester City) playing very positive football, high results, but we are where we are because in this precise area, we don't play positive football.

"I blame myself for that - 100%. I don't know why or how it happened, but I'm responsible for the mood the team is in, and this team was not. In general, like I said, we don't play positive football. It always feels in the end, we are always catching up with something."

Re: Mick @ 11:24 BST - Completely agree that VAR is clearly not working as it should be. But does anyone remember the season before it was introduced? I don't think a week went by when the biggest talking point was a bad refereeing call changing the outcome of a game. Pundits, fans & managers alike were calling out for VAR. Sure, VAR needs fixing - but let's not kid ourselves that scrapping it will put an end to refereeing controversies.

So Neil Warnock thinks VAR needs to be "sorted out" and Mick form Blyth has called for a "fans' referendum" on the future of VAR.

Presumably the question would be a simple: shall we keep VAR or ditch it?

    So what do you think?

Click thumbs up to keep VAR, thumbs down to get rid of it...

  10. 'I am not enjoying VAR at all at the moment'published at 11:29 British Summer Time 26 April

    Neil Warnock
Former Sheffield United, QPR and Cardiff boss on BBC Radio 5 Live

Until we sort VAR out in this country and get people in the studio that have played the game and know the game. I am not enjoying it at all at the moment.

When you look at the freeze-frame pictures. That split second. I saw another picture of the Coventry [disallowed] goal [against Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final] and it looked a clear goal to me, so you don't really know where you are. It has been disappointing for me.

I feel sorry for poor old [referees' boss] Howard Webb. You take two or three out of the referees squad and they are as poor as they have [ever] been.

If referees refereed like Howard Webb did. You have got your people like [Michael] Oliver, there are three or four top referees, I think - Anthony Taylor - and they are very, very good.

But, unfortunately, for all the good ones there are quite a lot of bad ones. Howard would have cringed, you know...that's the problem with referees. Like [Bill] Shankly said before me "they know the laws but they don't know the game". That's the problem we have.

Why is Sweden rejecting VAR not getting more coverage? Why are we stuck with it if it is not compulsory? For the start of the 24/25 season I propose the following: 1) Keep goal-line technology, 2) Introduce automated offsides, 3) Chuck VAR in the nearest skip. At my club (Newcastle) you have to be a registered member to buy tickets and I assume this is the case with most PL clubs, so all those people get a vote. We want a referendum!!!!

  12. VAR has taken everything out of it - Warnockpublished at 11:23 British Summer Time 26 April

    BBC Radio 5 Live

So Swedish clubs have voted against the introduction of VAR in their league.

Cue Neil Warnock, who says he once backed the introduction of VAR to the Premier League but now believes it needs to be reassessed.

The 75-year-old ex-Sheffield United, QPR and Cardiff manager, to name but a few of his former clubs, told 5 Live Breakfast: "VAR - I had been wanting it to come. Since I was at Cardiff and we got relegated [from the Premier League in 2019] - I can see it now - Craig Pawson, an offside goal that Chelsea scored late on. Wow, it [VAR] would have made such a difference.

"But then I see the Coventry FA Cup semi-final, the fans celebrating that winning goal [against Manchester United] and then the VAR. It has taken everything away from it. All the excitement. You can't cheer for a goal."

  13. Sweden rejects VAR after club oppositionpublished at 11:18 British Summer Time 26 April

Sweden has become the first country to reject the introduction of VAR after opposition from a majority of elite clubs.

The Swedish FA president Fredrik Reinfeldt had said a year ago that “VAR was our future” but The Times reports, external that he has now backed down and said he respected the majority opinion.

We promised you some Neil Warnock on VAR before being interrupted by Eddie Howe and Chris Wilder's news conferences.

There should be enough time to look at what he had to say before Jurgen Klopp's news conference, which is expected at around 11:30 BST.

RE: Ian @ 10:55 BST - somehow you seem to have completely missed the entire season-long conversation about PSR stunting the progress of teams like Newcastle. Your owners won't want to sell Bruno Guimaraes or Alexander Isak but they'll have to in order to meet the financial rules. Comparing them to Mike Ashley after they got you to the Champions League last season and challenging for Europe again this year is absurd and ungrateful. Have a cup of positive-a-tea.

  16. 'It's a poor season, not a poor football club'published at 11:11 British Summer Time 26 April

Newcastle v Sheffield United (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Sheffield United

A final word from Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder on what is next for the club, with the possibility that relegation from the Premier League could be confirmed this weekend: "We're not saying everything is great. What we are saying is there is a load of optimism about the future of the football club.

"It's a poor season, not a poor football club. We've been in far more worse positions than this as a football club, certainly over my time as a supporter, player and manager.

"So, we'll come again if the inevitable happens on the weekend. We'll try our best, as we did, like we did on Wednesday night at Old Trafford, to get a result for our club and our supporters - who yet again were magnificent."

Ian (10:55 BST), the Newcastle board have been fantastic. If someone is sold it's because they have to be to stick to the rules. The owners don't need the money.

  18. 'You have to take responsibility when there's a little bit of pain'published at 11:01 British Summer Time 26 April

Newcastle v Sheffield United (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder on what lessons the club has learned this season that could help them in the future: "Through good times, we all in enjoy it and we're all willing to take that credit when it happens, individually and collectively as a football club, and you have to own and suffer and take responsibility for the times when there's a little bit of pain.

"But certainly...reflection is massive for me: reflection in terms of a training session, reflection in terms of a game, a part of the season or an overall season from everybody. Are we doing the right things medically? Are we doing the right things on the training ground? Are we doing the right things with recruitment? Things that I can control.

"There are certain things we haven't got right as a football club this season. As a club, there is humility, a lot of humble people. We've had a poor season - that's there for all to see.

"We've had to take the words and the criticism but as I said, it doesn't last forever; we'll learn. I'm still learning as a manager, at the ripe old age I am [56], with 1,000 games under my belt."

If Newcastle's owners have any ambition why would they sell either Bruno Guimaraes or Alexander Isak to any rivals? If they do they're no better than the hated [former owner Mike] Ashley.

Newcastle v Sheffield United (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder on further team news: "[James] McAtee went for a scan and we’re waiting for the results. We believe Jayden [Bogle] will be OK.

"It will open up for a couple of the younger lads, who were absolutely outstanding in the local derby last night."

Blades strikers Ryan One and Louie Marsh both scored in a 2-0 win for Sheffield United's Under-21s, external at home to Sheffield Wednesday on Thursday night.
