Julian Alvarez played a lot of games for Manchester City last season and he does really seem a big miss. And if you've watched City over the last few games, you'd think they need freshening up.

Pep Guardiola, compared to other Premier League managers, seems reluctant to make so many wholesale changes. He doesn't use his bench a lot for somebody who keeps talking about how fatigued all the players are. I do find that pretty strange.

But come January, if performances aren't at the level Guardiola expects, they might have to go for some signings.

I don't think Manchester City have been a club that's stuck with the same team. But that level of chopping and changing is always going to be tough on players. It's difficult to get your head around it as a player.

No matter how good you are, it hits your confidence if you are losing that many number of games. You feel the impact of getting beaten and it's a tough thing to get out of.

Of course they will come out of it because they have an incredible team and an incredible manager, but they will all be wondering when they are going to come out of it.

The international break has come at the right time for them. They can take it as a recess and switch off for a bit.

One of the things Pep Guardiola has always done really well is keeping his squad fresh. That's where that ever-changing defence comes in.

But because of their squad depth and the injuries they've got, they can't do that now. There's also pressure on each and every one of their Premier League game because they have a gap to make up.

I wonder if that will impact on their ability to do that kind of 17-game winning run at the end of the season. City always have a blip, but they've always done that run towards the end of the season.

  4. 'It's a crisis for Guardiola and City'published at 12:52 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November

It's a crisis for Pep Guardiola. By Manchester City standards, it's a crisis. It's a bad two weeks for them and that hasn't happened very much when Guardiola has been in charge.

I had a look at their starting line-ups and their backline from the start of the season and in almost every game, they've chopped and changed the defence.

You'd think it's City and they are all top quality players and they should be able to connect and have that understanding, but maybe there is something in there.

It looks to me that they are not controlling the game as they've done in previous seasons. A big reason could be Rodri's absence, but the chopping and changing might be a reason why they are struggling at the moment.

  6. PGMOL in a very difficult situation: Former ref Framptonpublished at 12:40 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November

Former referee Janie Frampton said that refereeing body PGMOL is in a "very difficult situation" after a video allegedly showing Premier League referee David Coote making derogatory comments about Liverpool and the club's former manager Jurgen Klopp was circulated on social media.

"I'm sure Howard [Webb] and the rest of his team will have this investigation to the point that it is not just investigating this case, but there's some huge takeaways as to how they can put processes in place going forward to prevent this from happening again," Frampton told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"This is common sense and common sense is sadly lacking on this situation."

"We can't like all of the people all the time. That's a fact.

"What this will prove, if the case is found proven against David [Coote], is that his integrity is in question. I think that leaves his role untenable"

"It's such a shame, because he's a really nice guy and a really intelligent guy. I was so disappointed."

  7. 'More transparency could help PGMOL'published at 12:32 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November

There's something very modern about all of it. If you had watched the video 10 years ago, you would not have been able to imagine it could possibly be fake. But that technology now exists. We have all seen AI-altered videos, so until it's verified, you cannot know if it's real.

But the stakes are quite high. If it's real there will be serious ramifications for David Coote's career. To be honest, even if it's not real, there's quite a lot of damage done anyway. It's a serious situation.

I've felt for a long time that PGMOL is a slightly unnecessarily opaque organisation. Their authority will be bolstered by more transparency. You see a lot of very unfounded conspiracies around referees and more transparency might help deal with it.

  8. Suspended Coote not involved in final Nations League fixturespublished at 12:23 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November

Suspended Premier League official David Coote will not be involved in the final two rounds of Nations League fixtures over the next week.

Coote is a highly-regarded international Video Assistant Referee, who was Support VAR for the Under-17 World Cup final between Germany and France in Indonesia last year and a VAR at the Olympic Games in France earlier this year.

Multiple sources have said Coote was expected to be nominated to a game on either the fifth or sixth Nations League match round.

However, that will not happen as a result of the action taken by PGMOL in light of the video that has emerged of Coote using obscene language in his description of former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Coote was VAR in the most recent round of Nations League matches in October, when he was part of PGMOL colleague Anthony Taylor’s team for Hungary’s 2-0 win in Bosnia-Herzegovina on 14 October.

The one thing I would say about Liverpool, if you compare them to Arsenal and Manchester City, where it seems like for those to teams the number of games which are coming thick and fast seem an inconvenience, it doesn't seem that way for Liverpool; It seems like they're really enjoying football.

They've got off to a flying start; new manager in - but it's more than a new manager bounce and it looks like Arne Slot is the guy who has been in for years and it's routine for Liverpool at this moment in time, while it seems like Pep [Guardiola] and [Mikel] Arteta are just through the door and are struggling.

But things can change quickly. Manchester City have barely had a bad couple of weeks in Pep's time there, and we all know they're going to bounce back eventually.

Eleven games in is really early. It's no time to start talking about title favourites. Contenders? Yes, maybe. It's better start than maybe we expected from Liverpool and they will be rightly very pleased with how it's gone. But it can shift really quickly, especially with the length of the season that's left.

  11. Christmas decorations in early November - yes or no?published at 12:00 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November

    Monday Night Club

Back to the Monday Night Club now and the first topic of conversation was Chris Sutton's glowing Christmas tree that was displayed in his living room in early November.

"This is nothing to do with me," said Chris when host Mark Chapman pointed out his festive decorations. "The worst thing is, my wife, Sam, said, 'we've got them up late this year!'"

So, if it's too early to put your Christmas decorations, is it also too soon to mark Liverpool, who are five points clear of Manchester City and nine points ahead of Chelsea and Arsenal, as early favourites for the Premier League title? ...

  12. Odegaard withdraws from Norway squadpublished at 11:50 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November

Norway and Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard says he needs to "listen to his body" after withdrawing from his country's squad for this week's Nations League fixtures.

The midfielder injured ankle ligaments during September's international break, forcing him to miss seven weeks of action.

He made his return in Arsenal's 1-0 defeat by Inter Milan in the Champions League last week before playing the whole of Sunday's 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League.

Odegaard was initially left out of Norway's squad for matches against Slovenia on 14 November and Kazakhstan three days later but he travelled to Oslo to be assessed by the medical department.

Scotland have called up Stuart Armstrong for their Nations League fixtures against Croatia and Poland after attackers Che Adams and Lewis Morgan withdrew from the squad.

Armstrong, who plays for Major League Soccer side Vancouver Whitecaps, was part of Scotland's Euro 2024 squad and made his most recent international appearance in a 1-0 defeat to Hungary in the tournament.

The former Celtic and Southampton midfielder started for Vancouver as they were knocked out of the MLS Cup play-offs by Los Angeles FC on Saturday.

Head coach Steve Clarke now has a 24-strong squad as they look to build on a goalless draw against Group A1 leaders Portugal in their last game, which followed three straight defeats in the competition.
