    HT: Northampton 1-0 Rotherham

Ex-Rotherham manager on BBC Radio Sheffield

I'm not too sure it's a fair result.

When you have the opportunities that we had in the game, you have to take those.

Sherif had that little one where he kicked the ball into the ground but we've got to ask questions of the keeper.

Then the referee does the job for them, against the run of play.

There's still a lot of hope, we just have to convert the chances when they come and don't give anything away. We look like getting a goal, they don't.

We've got five League One games on our feature list this afternoon but don't think we've forgotten about the action at Leyton Orient and Wigan.

The O's face a Doncaster Rovers side in similar form to them. Neither have registered a win over their last four games and have only taken one point of the possible 12.

Meanwhile, Wigan host Wycombe looking to break a three match winless streak of their own.

It's been 165 days since one of the most memorable afternoons in Port Vale's recent history when two goals in three second-half minutes secured a win over AFC Wimbledon at Plough Lane to book Vale an immediate return to League One.

The victory not only ensured they went up with one game still to play and secured their first automatic promotion in 12 years, it also ended the Dons' hopes of automatic promotion, though a month later they beat Walsall at Wembley in the League Two play-off final.

Today they are reunited again as two of the hottest teams in the third tier.

The Wombles have made their best ever start to an EFL season - after taking just nine points from their opening seven fixtures, they have won the past four straight games to sit fifth, within striking distance of the top-three today.

Johnnie Jackson's men have won four of their five home games and have scored twice in eight of their 11 games so far, earning the boss a contract extension yesterday.

Vale began the campaign with just two points, and two goals, from their opening seven games but have turned the corner in style to climb to 16th, nine points behind their hosts.

Last Saturday's goalless draw at home to Northampton ended a run of three straight wins, but was a third clean sheet in those four matches and their 10 goals conceded in 11 matches is their fewest to start a season in 50 years.

Unstoppable force v immovable object... who are you taking?

  4. Royals seek to keep resurgence going in Devonpublished at 14:56 BST 11 October

    Exeter v Reading (15:00 BST)

Jack Marriott celebrates a goalImage source, Rex Features

With all due respect to Exeter, you wouldn't have found too many people expecting the Grecians to sit ahead of Reading in the League One table on the second international weekend of the season.

The Royals took the League One play-off race to the final day last season but Noel Hunt's new-look Royals began this season with three straight defeats, and just one goal scored, though there are signs the ship has steadied and might now be heading in the right direction again.

The Royals are one point above the drop zone before their trip to St James Park, but have played a game fewer than many of the sides around them, including the Grecians, two places higher in 17th and two points better off.

Summer arrival Jack Marriott has found his scoring boots, netting in four straight games, and Reading have lost just one of their past seven while City have lost three of their past four at home and had lost four straight before the eye-catching 1-0 win at Lincoln last time out.

Despite that win, if boss Gary Caldwell had his way, this fixture wouldn't even be taking place as Josh Magennis is away on Northern Ireland duty.

  5. Trotters hoping to click on the roadpublished at 14:55 BST 11 October

    Burton v Bolton (15:00 BST)

Mason Burstow celebrates a goalImage source, Rex Features

Big one this, by tea-time we might have a clearer idea of whether the Brewers are in for another season of struggle, if the Trotters are a force to be reckoned with in the promotion race, or maybe neither of those things.

Bolton are winless in five away games this season, drawing three straight games on the road 1-1 but by contrast have taken 14 points from six home games and have the division's leading scorer in Mason Burstow (pictured) with seven.

Though they don't have the best record at the Pirelli, winning on just one of their six visits, there aren’t many better places to go if you’re looking for an away win this season.

Burton's goal 50 minutes into the opening day win over Mansfield was their last at home, with four scoreless games since and a single point, from a stalemate against Port Vale.

In total they have conceded nine in those five games and have scored only three in their past eight games in total.

Can they break the run this afternoon?

  6. Dobbie 'ready' to take hold of managerless Blackpoolpublished at 14:54 BST 11 October

    Stockport v Blackpool (15:00 BST)

    Media caption,

Blackpool's interim boss Stephen Dobbie talks to Andy Bayes about life after Steve Bruce.

The promise of what Blackpool could achieve under veteran boss Steve Bruce never came to fruition and the 64-year-old has now parted ways with the Tangerines, leaving them one point above bottom place.

Taking the helm for the visitors is caretaker boss Stephen Dobbie, who has previously been given the hefty task of getting them out of trouble and failed, seeing them relegated out of the Championship in 2023.

But Dobbie did win three of his six games in charge and this time, he feels even more up to the task.

"I'd say I'm more ready," he told BBC Radio Lancashire. "Last time, we were in the Championship fighting relegation. You get thrown into it and your mind races.

"This time, I've been in over a year. I'm comfortable, I know the players. It's still stressful, but I'm more ready now."

Stockport, meanwhile, are looking to contest for promotion once again this season but have struggled at home as of late, taking just eight points from a possible 15 at Edgeley Park.

Fabrizio Cavegn is on a four-match scoring streak for Bristol Rovers

Four goals in Fabrizio Cavegn’s last four League Two appearances, it can’t go on like this, can it? It can.

The summer signing from Vaduz is in red-hot form and picked up an unsurprising 75 per cent of the vote in Bristol Rovers’ Player of the Month vote for September.

Rovers were in their own rich vein of form until Walsall ended a seven-game unbeaten run in the league – in all competitions, they have lost to only the Saddlers in their last 10.

The even better news is that they haven’t lost at the Memorial Ground since the opening weekend, and have defender Tom Lockyer training with them.

The worse news is they are facing an MK Dons side who are yet to be beaten on their League Two travels.

A win for Paul Warne's side would cement their place in the play-off places, and would make it nine points from the last nine available.

  9. Can Walsall further extend their lead at the top?published at 14:51 BST 11 October

Walsall will extend their lead at the top of League Two to four points if they make it four wins on the spin as they face lowly Crawley Town - who are on a three-match losing streak.

In total, the Saddlers have won eight of their opening 11 games this season, their most victories at this stage of a season since 2000-01 (also 8), a season during which they were promoted from the third tier.

With second-placed Swindon not in action this weekend, Grimsby and Gillingham have the chance to move into the top two.

Grimsby - who have had their best start to a Football League season since 2005 - host Colchester, while the Gills take on the league's most porous defence in Cheltenham.

At the foot of the table, Newport County travel to Accrington. The Welsh side won't have many better chances to leap off the bottom, with Stanley winning one of their last 10 fixtures at the Wham Stadium.

Shrewsbury ended their three-match run without a win by drawing with Barrow last time out. The Shrews take on Cambridge - who have only tasted victory twice in their last 10 trips to Shropshire.

Elsewhere in the 15:00 BST kick-offs, play-off placed duo Salford and Crewe take on Chesterfield and Bromley, MK Dons battle Bristol Rovers, Harrogate travel to Fleetwood, and Tranmere meet Barnet.

  11. HALF-TIMEpublished at 14:50 BST 11 October

    Northampton 1-0 Rotherham

Rotherham start brightly but once Zak Jules gives away a controversial penalty, the Millers haven't been able to refind their feet.

Can they turn things around in the next half or face yet another away loss?

We will see and our eyes will soon be treated to some more football. All the build-up to our 3pm games on the way...

  12. YELLOW CARDpublished at 14:49 BST 11 October

    Northampton 1-0 Rotherham

Northampton Town substitute Ethan Wheatley is tugged back by Zak Jules and the Millers defended is cautioned.

He's also given away a free-kick. Given he bears responsibility for the penalty too, he'll be hoping it doesn't go in.

Fortunately, it doesn't but Northampton are the ones on the attack as this first-half draws to a close.

  13. Postpublished at 14:46 BST 11 October

Rotherham take a throw-in in lightening quick time but while the box is looking bare, it's not enough to catch the Cobblers out.

It's cleared out the box and Rotherham see the flag up for offside to still their follow up attack.

Meanwhile, there's four more minutes added to the clock.

    Northampton 1-0 Rotherham

    Ronnie Moore

It's never ever been a penalty that. No way!

They've only scored because of the help of the referee.

It's one of the worst decisions I've ever seen, not one of their players appealed for it.

We've been on top. It's an awful decision.

  19. PENALTY TO NORTHAMPTONpublished at 14:25 BST 11 October

Oh dear. A great start for Rotherham isn't looking so bright now...

Kamarai Swyer trips up in the box and the referee puts all the blame on Zak Jules as he points to the spot.

  20. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 14:22 BST 11 October

    Northampton 0-0 Rotherham

It's the end of the road for Jack Vale.

A real shame for him, who was making his first league start for the Cobblers.

The good news for the fans is that they have usual starter Ethan Wheatley called off the bench to replace him.
