York moved up to sixth in the National League with a comprehensive 4-0 home victory over Gateshead.

After a brave effort in defeat at Barnsley in the FA Cup on Saturday, Stuart Maynard's side quickly got back to winning ways with a scintillating first-half display.

Josh Stones, Joe Felix and Alex Hunt all struck during the opening 29 minutes to seal the three points before Ollie Pearce added a late fourth in stoppage-time to help York leapfrog Southend in the table.

Stones broke the deadlock after 11 minutes when he powered home at the back post from Mark Kitching's cross.

It was 2-0 with 17 minutes played when Felix curled home after he cut inside before Hunt put the result to bed in the 29th minute when he headed in another Kitching cross.

After a low-key second half, Pearce headed in a cross by Ollie Banks before forward Pearce squandered a penalty kick late on to ensure it finished 4-0.
