FA Cup highlights: Carlisle United 0-2 Wigan Athletic

Wigan Athletic keeper Sam Tickle’s extra-time heroics helped his side to victory over 10-man Carlisle United in the FA Cup first round.

Following Ethan Robson's sending-off on 14 minutes, Wigan had plenty of chances to break the deadlock in the second half but Carlisle held firm until Scott Smith and Jonny Smith scored to spare the visitors’ blushes.

Mike Williamson’s men went down to 10 men when Robson was shown a straight red for a heavy challenge on Steven Sessegnon. But the hosts still had plenty of chances - and Tickle was called into action to claw an Aaron Hayden header off the line.

After the break, the visitors, sparked by a flurry of changes, dominated - and Jonny Smith almost created a goal as his brilliant cross found the head of Thelo Aasgaard but the midfielder failed to hit the target.

Carlisle's excellent keeper Gabe Breeze defied Wigan in the closing stages to take it to extra time - before the Latics got the vital breakthrough in the 105th minute when Scott Smith steered a Silko Thomas cross into the Carlisle net.

The Cumbrians had chances to equalise when Dominic Sadi’s shot was saved by England Under-21 international Tickle, who also kept out a goal-bound Luke Armstrong header.

But Jonny Smith wrapped up the Latics' win in the 121st minute when he rolled the ball into an empty net after all the remaining 10 Carlisle men went up for a corner.
