League One Wycombe upset Championship visitors Portsmouth

First-half goals from Brandon Hanlan and Sonny Bradley helped League One promotion chasers Wycombe Wanderers upset Championship side Portsmouth and book their place in the FA Cup fourth round.

Hanlan converted on 17 minutes after a good break down the right from GIdeon Kodua and Bradley headed in Luke Leahy's free-kick just before the half hour to put the home side into a commanding lead they never looked like relinquishing against the 2008 Cup winners.

In a frantic start to the game, home goalkeeper Shamal George denied Paddy Lane from distance and Christian Saydee's back heeled follow-up was cleared off the line.

Jordan Archer then had to save at the feet of Wycombe forward Beryly Lubala before George was forced off through injury inside the opening 10 minutes although his replacement, Nathan Bishop was rarely threatened.

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho made nine changes from the side which began their Championship defeat by Sunderland last Sunday, but his makeshift side found it difficult in the freezing conditions at Adams Park.

Lane's early shot and Saydee's follow-up were the closest they came all evening as Wycombe, who made seven changes of their own, reached the fourth round for the first time in four seasons.

Even the early injury to George, who became the father of twins last week, failed to derail the home side's progress with the goalkeeper going down injured shortly after making the save from Lane.

Kodua had already served an early warning to the Pompey defence before a surging run down the right-hand side saw him break through challenges from Lane and Rob Atkinson, with the ball then arriving at the feet of Hanlan who made no mistake from six yards to give the Chairboys the lead.

It got worse for the visitors 10 minutes later as Kodua was fouled midway inside the Portsmouth half and Bradley got on the end of Leahy's free-kick to power his header past Archer for his first goal for Wycombe - against one of his former clubs.

It could have been worse for Portsmouth just before the break as Leahy found space just inside the box but sent his left-footed curler just wide of the post.

Mousinho made three changes at the interval but a serious comeback failed to materialise with Bishop finally forced into a save in the final minute as he tipped Tom McIntyre's 20-yard drive around the post.

Wycombe move into Sunday's fourth round draw, while Portsmouth are left to concentrate on their battle to avoid relegation straight back to League One.

Wycombe boss Matt Bloomfield told BBC Three Counties Radio:

"I know both teams made changes, but for us it was always going to be a really tough night, and to come through it, we're really pleased.

"Sonny Bradley is a proper Wycombe type, he wants to defend our goal, he encourages and moves people around him and leads at the back.

"Shamal just felt his groin - hopefully it's not too bad. He's had a busy week, but for Bish to come on at a couple of minutes notice and do everything he needed to do was great.

"We have a big belief that you can make however many changes but the identity of the performance should stay the same. It's not always the case because lads sometimes aren't up to speed, but the way they implemented the game plan at such short preparation time at the end of a busy period was top drawer."

Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent:

"The fact we're out of the FA Cup is one thing, I can live with that but it's the nature of the way, after we went a goal down, we just went under and it's disappointing.

"There were a load of chances for players to come in and make their mark and make selection difficult for me going forward.

"We had a great chance to take the lead but we don't put it in the net and that's fine, it happens - we concede the first goal and we'll live with that but it's what happens afterwards.

"If players don't know that's way below the standard we need to compete at any level then there's no hope."
