West Ham boss Graham Potter, speaking to ITV: "The start of the game was really good.

"I thought we had good organisation and offered a threat and reduced Aston Villa to not too much.

"The second half Aston Villa stepped-up and pushed us back a bit too much.

"Losing Niclas Fullkrug and Crysencio Summerville affected our attacking part of the game."

On Aston Villa's equaliser: "I don't think the first goal was a corner, it didn't look it.

"2-1 down, we regrouped and pushed at the end."

On the performance: "Overall, disappointed to go out, but lots of positives in the game.

"We had to adjust without Crysencio and that affected our attacking play - Villa pushed us back.

"We ended up too deep and with the ball we couldn't sustain enough attacks, but that's something we will have to improve.

"The players for the last two days have been good. We have to hang on to the positives.

"We dropped too deep and the injuries to the attacking players were a blow for us."

Doesn't really matter if it was correctly or incorrectly given as a corner, you still need to defend it. The ball doesn't magically gravitate to the back of the net because the decision was wrong. Potter has lots of work to do.

One manager reiterating the importance of the FA Cup and the other refusing to get drawn into a debate over refereeing decisions.

Two very nice responses from both bosses there. Not often you get that.

  7. 'This competition is very important'published at 22:36 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery to BBC Sport: "I am very happy because we did a very good match. We're getting stronger and more imposing.

"We conceded one goal. One of our work to do is to try to concede less goals. But like the season is going, as we progress we get better. We finished strong.

"To win is very important for the confidence. We gave players minutes as well. We are happy because this competition as well, historically, very important.

"In 90 minutes we were trying to be clinical. We didn't do this in the first half, but in the second half we were better. We were dominating more and pushing more. We were more clinical. we respected this competition and respected the opponent.

"We did our work like we planned."

West Ham boss Graham Potter, speaking to BBC: "We're disappointed to go out and to lose, but the application of the players has been really good. They've carried out everything we've asked them to do in a short space of time.

"It's disappointing to lose the players we did from an attacking perspective, that probably changed our threat. We had some more chances at the end but in the end Aston villa were too strong.

"We just try to get the team into a good shape. The talent is there but it's just about trying to get the team together as a collective. That's what we're trying to do.

"After 2-1 we still had some chances at the end. We pushed and pushed, but it was not meant to be.

"Niclas [Fullkrug's injury] looked a bad one so that's going to be more time. Crysencio Summerville's is a bit more precautionary. We're hoping it's less severe."

Should Villa have been awarded a corner before their equaliser?: "It didn't look it live, we're surprised it was a corner. But the referee has given it. There's nothing we can do now.

"The players have had a big week, a difficult week. We need to recover and refresh and have a big game on Tuesday night."

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa goalscorer Morgan Rogers to ITV One: "A bit of belief, we were a bit more patient. There was more forward thinking.

"We created chances, a bit more mayhem in the final third, and that's where our goals came from.

"We know we can come back against anyone. We'll look to rectify the start of games, but we're happy with the way we've finished them.

"Why can't we win it? Anything can happen in a cup competition. You don't know who you'll draw, where you'll play."

Any win is nice, but frankly the Hammers don't need the hassle this year. Concentrate on getting the 40 points and on to next season. Sad to say, but it is what it is. Graham Potter, you've got a job on.

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery to ITV One: "Happy, but we were trying to set an objective of not conceding an easy goal, but we did it early again.

"But we responded well. We didn't concede chances again more or less. The players showed our wishes to do something in the competition.

"We are conceding a lot of goals, but our most important objective is to win.

"We try to be strong here, to have a fortress. We have done what we have done all season. We responded well and controlled the game more or less.

"Of course it is very important which team we will face after today. But now we focus, because we are in three competitions and we want to get something in the Champions League, in the Premier League and now in the FA Cup."

Aston Villa were fortunate with the award of the corner that lead to the first goal but they were denied a clear corner just a few moments earlier. Swings and roundabouts of a football game.

Awful decision for the corner which handed it to Villa. Not something to get annoyed about when it's so wrong.
