1. What awaits Kompany at Bayern?published at 12:35 British Summer Time 30 May 2024

Put simply, and it is something felt by most managers but most definitely at Bayern, pressure to win a trophy is what awaits Vincent Kompany at the German giants.

Bayern did not win a single piece of silverware last season, including not winning the Bundesliga for the first time in 12 years. A club used to winning titles will want to be straight back on course to lifting another - two seasons in a row without silverware would be seen as a disaster.

Kompany will also have to win over the dressing room as well as fans. The appointment has not been convincing for a lot of football supporters.

I wonder if Kompany might do better at Bayern than Burnley (not that he did badly there at all). I think that Pep would not keep a poor team up - he makes a very good side great, but unlike a Ferguson or a Bobby Robson, he could not make a poor side good. I think Kompany could be cut from the same cloth as Pep and so he will do very well at Bayern as it is a very good side already.

  3. Whatever happened to Owen Coyle?published at 12:29 British Summer Time 30 May 2024

FYI, Burnley earned promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 2009 after Owen Coyle's team beat Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final.

Coyle left the following January to take charge of local rivals Bolton and was called 'Judas' by Burnley fans when the two sides met later that season, which saw the Clarets get relegated.

Coyle was sacked by Bolton after they suffered the same fate in 2012 and is now in his eighth job since, in charge of Indian club Chennaiyin.

  4. How have Burnley fans reacted to Kompany's departure?published at 12:19 British Summer Time 30 May 2024

BBC Sport has asked Burnley fans what they thought about the departure of manager Vincent Kompany. Here are some of the responses:

Sam: He has been backed to the hills by the board. We go down because of him being stubborn and refusing to change his ways, then he jumps ship. I can’t see him lasting the season.

Paul: No way could he turn down such a chance. But that said, after getting us relegated, and all the time pointing at the five-year-plan, it leaves a sour taste in the mouth. Stick with me, he was saying, but then he did not stick with us. He gave us the best season ever, then one of the worst. Feelings are confused. I wish him well but I am also quite angry at him.

Keith: Stubborn and naive. Cost Burnley the chance to remain in the Premier League when points deductions to rivals meant it could not have been easier.

Peter: I have nothing but respect for Vinnie. He made mistakes this season but I believe he will be a great manager. No one should blame him for accepting Bayern's offer.

Ian: Shades of Owen Coyle, both in the manner of departure and, an inflated reputation based on one successful season. I hope Vincent Kompany's future career in management doesn't follow the same trajectory!

  5. Did Guardiola have a hand in the appointment?published at 12:13 British Summer Time 30 May 2024

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and Vincent Kompany have a good relationship from when Kompany played for City.

Kompany competed for City from 2008-2019 so was already at the club when Guardiola joined in 2016, but did the boss help his former player get the Bayern Munich job?

"Bayern and Pep [Guardiola] talked about what could be the ideal coach," Guillem Balague said on the Euro Leagues podcast. "Kompany's name came up and the report from Pep couldn't have been more positive."

Kompany suggests he was ‘surprised’ by the first call, but playing the private person card. Probably just didn’t want people to know Chorley* thought he was their level . . . *(could’ve picked any National League North team, Chorley is geographically closest to Burnley, I think)

  7. 'Sometimes people take these jobs too early'published at 12:03 British Summer Time 30 May 2024

    James Horncastle
European football writer on BBC Radio 5 Live's Euro Leagues podcast

Vincent Kompany did a fine job at getting Burnley promoted and he has transformed their playing style from what we became accustomed to over the years.

Yes, they have been relegated, but I do not see that as a failure given the resources and player personnel he had. But I do think Bayern Munich is a big job and sometimes people take these jobs too early.

Kompany has had experience but this is another level. It has been challenging enough for the top managers, who are more experienced, to control everything there is at Bayern Munich.

He feels like the fourth or fifth guy on the list and that should also be playing on his mind.

  8. Kompany's Burnley recordpublished at 11:56 British Summer Time 30 May 2024

Above you will see Vincent Kompany's overall record while in charge of Burnley.

He was appointed boss in 2022 and in his first season he guided the club to promotion back into the Premier League. In the 2022-23 campaign Burnley only lost three games in the Championship, with the club gaining 101 points to earn automatic promotion to the top flight.

However, Kompany's record in the Premier League was much less impressive. In the 23-24 season, the Clarets won just five matches from 38 and finished with 24 points, eight points from safety.

As a Burnley fan, I wish VK all the best at Bayern. You simply don’t turn Bayern down! But, unless I’ve missed it, I’m yet to see him thank Burnley for the opportunity he received or thanking the fans for the support he got during last year's shambles?

To be honest Mark, didn't see that ourselves either.

Vincent Kompany has admitted he did nothing different in the Premier League to what he did in the Championship. This stubborn attitude and a lack of tactical astuteness led to Burnley’s relegation. It wasn’t working so why didn’t he adapt? I can see this appointment in Munich being an embarrassing train wreck. I hope I’m proved wrong as Kompany seems a nice guy.

The reaction of Vincent Kompany's Bayern Munich appointment has been largely confusion and shock.

Kompany was in charge of Burnley this past season and the club were relegated, yet the manager has been given one of the most coveted jobs in European football.

Here is some of the fan reaction from social media:

One wrote: "Never in my life have I ever seen someone fail upwards."

Another said: "We all have doubts about him but he might be the one to actually send Bayern to relegation."

And a third added: "We are now living in a football manager simulation."

However, the reaction has not been all bad. Many supporters have wished him good luck and congratulations.

He also has the backing of the club with sporting director Christoph Freund saying: "He is a young, very ambitious coach, who brings a lot of international experience, has his finger on the pulse of the players and knows exactly what should happen on the pitch."

  13. Bayern's manager hunt fiascopublished at 11:26 British Summer Time 30 May 2024

Bayern Munich announced back in February that Thomas Tuchel would not continue in the managerial role next season but he would see out the current campaign.

The move gave the club time to source the right manager but they had to go down the list of preferred candidates with many turning down the job.

Among the first round of top picks was manager of title rivals Bayer Leverkusen, Xabi Alonso, but he chose instead to re-sign with his current club. Julian Nagelsmann, Hansi Flick, Ralf Rangnick and Zinedine Zidane, external all reportedly turned down the job also.

When those candidates failed to work out they went back to Tuchel to try to get him to stay but to no avail. Next came Crsytal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, which didn't work out, and they also reportedly looked at Manchester United's Erik ten Hag and Roberto de Zerbi, who has just left Brighton.

The path then led them to Vincent Kompany, who signed on the dotted line.

Bayern Munich's board member for sport Max Eberl on Vincent Kompany's appointment: "Vincent's two years at Anderlecht were exceptional, he coached the youngest team in Europe there. Then he decided to move to England. [Burnley] were promoted to the Premier League with a record 101 points and impressive football. That's why he's been on [our] list for a long time.

"In terms of experience, we're now going down the path together with him. We had a long decision-making process when looking for a coach and I can say: you save the best for last."

And on what Kompany brings to the job: "Vincent has everything except the experience of having worked at a top club so far. He has a great personality and his style of play suits FC Bayern perfectly: we want to be dominant, we want to have the ball. He also stands for that. We're delighted to have this coach with us and to take the next steps with him."

Do you think Bayern's new manager will convince their wantaway defender to stay? They say that Mazraoui loves Kompany.

Well Steve, Alphonso Davies' rumoured move to Real Madrid either this summer or the next may give Noussair Mazraoui the chance to earn a regular start at full-back.

Bayern Munich's chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen on the club's new manager and the process to finding him: "We would be ill-advised to not draw on the expertise of people like Uli Hoeness or Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. That is our strength. I can't remember a coach who was rejected by one person.

"But a discourse always involves a discussion. We have now agreed a three-year contract with Vincent and hopefully it will be extended at some point."

Some say consistent, some say stubborn...

My only concern with Kompany is that he appears to be tactically stubborn. At Burnley he had his preferred style and never adapted, which resulted in them going down. His style suits Bayern a lot more, so he'll probably be more successful. But will he be able to adapt if things don't start going his way?

    Bayern Munich

And finally from Vincent Kompany, he added this on his two years in charge of Burnley, when he won promotion from the Championship before being relegated straight back down from the Premier League: "The first year you have 46 games, we only lost three games, [and earned] the highest the club has ever achieved in terms of points return.

"We knew we were in the bottom three in terms of budget [in the Premier League]. What you learn about yourselves in the highs and lows is that you can be consistent. I wasn't any different from the Championship to the Premier League. I didn't work less, I didn't start the week complaining about players, I supported them. The building was extremely motivated, the energy was there until the last training [session] of the season."

  19. 'You assume Bayern were the first club to call me'published at 10:50 British Summer Time 30 May 2024

    Bayern Munich
    Bayern Munich

Vincent Kompany on the surprise around his appointment: "I think the aspect of being surprised is because you assume it is the only club that called and you only assume it because I am a private person. Maybe I was surprised by the first call but it wasn't from Bayern Munich.

"For me, I know whatever club you are at you have to be internally on the same line. You have to have that feeling. I felt that and that is why the opportunity was so appealing."

Doubt he'll ever reveal it but would love to hear who else was interested in Kompany... Chelsea?? Barcelona?? The Spanish giants named former Bayern boss Hansi Flick as their new coach yesterday. Apparently there's a certain team in Manchester that is also contemplating appointing a new boss... Man United?? Really??

  20. 'We don't reach next year's Champions League final by just talking about it'published at 10:46 British Summer Time 30 May 2024

    Bayern Munich
    Bayern Munich

Vincent Kompany on his children's reaction to moving to Germany: "My family was happy. The first move from England to Brussels [to rejoin Anderlecht in 2019] was a first test for them to move. We had some good moments there so they looked forward to the move to Munich."

And on pressure: "I have a different way of dealing with it. It is not part of my life."

Kompany on winning the Champions League: "The goal for me is quite simple, I try to win every game and it doesn't matter where you are, that is my main goal. The final is in Munich next year, the Champions League is becoming more important. We don't reach that by just talking about it. We have to work and train hard and develop in every game."
