Vincent Kompany on Bayern and Germany winger Leroy Sane, who is a former team-mate: "We had an unbelievable time together at Manchester City. When I was at City I was a little bit more than a captain. I won't be that different now. It is a talented team and he is a talented player. To make it really simple, my job is to try to get the most out of Sane and out of every player in the team. From that I will make no distinction."

Vincent Kompany added on his personality: "I am eternally motivated. I wake up with pure motivation, with pure intention to make people around me better. I am not defined by the successful years in my life, I am defined from when I have had tough times.

"I don't want to be successful on my own but with as many people as possible. Coming to Bayern is a massive club but it would be a mistake from me to look at people any differently... What I would love to do is not only have the best players but the best team."

Vincent Kompany on who he sees as the most important players at his new club Bayern Munich: "I think it is too early to discuss any individuals in the team right now. I am excited to work with every player. I am excited to find out how hungry every player is. [When you lose] this is when you come to life."

Bayern had won 11 straight Bundesliga titles before Bayer Leverkusen became German champions for the first time this season under Xabi Alonso. They were also knocked out of the second round of the German Cup and in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

  4. Can 'eighth-choice punt' Kompany restore Bayern glories?published at 10:30 British Summer Time 30 May 2024

Vincent Kompany is the new Bayern Munich head coach - you have to almost say it out loud to believe it.

The Bundesliga giants have finally completed their well-publicised search for Thomas Tuchel's successor after a hunt that began at Bayer Leverkusen and ended in Burnley.

Kompany knows he was way down the scale for the role, but now has the task of restoring a fallen European giant to its former glories.

This, no doubt, will be one of the most sensational stories of the summer, leaving the footballing fraternity flabbergasted at how a manager who was relegated from the Premier League was able to pick up one of the most prestigious jobs in the sport.

Vincent Kompany on Bayern Munich's drawn out manager search: "From my side, I didn't think about it too much. Being a coach, it consumes every minute of every day. While I was being a coach I didn't have any time to think about anything else.

"When they called, I didn't have a plan to do anything as I was doing a job [at Burnley]. I am a very private person and I was fortunate to have interest from other clubs as well. I was never interested in anything else but I was happy to meet people... I thought 'I am happy to do this'."

Vincent Kompany on Pep Guardiola and if he discussed the job with his former Manchester City manager: "I wouldn't compare the two of us [in terms of style]. He was very important in my career and very supportive."

On whether this level of managerial job has come faster than expected: "My mentality is I never haven't worked for a top club. The top club is the environment you create. It's the work you do with your staff. The good and bad times define working at a top level. To be here already feels like home. I feel I am in a place where I can continue with this idea."

Vincent Kompany on his new players: "I think the main thing is I have lived at this level for most of my career, I have been in these dressing rooms for most of my career. You are always adapting to the people you are talking to. Sometimes you are protecting the culture. Hard work is a common understanding for everyone.

"On the basics, everyone knows how we want to approach the season and our jobs... in the main you adapt to the people, cultures and individuals in the dressing room."

Kompany has tried to play the right kind of football that will be better suited to a bigger club. He has every chance of succeeding at Bayern and I wish him well. I hope he returns to the Premier League again soon, perhaps as the next manager at Man City.

Vincent Kompany on the recruitment process at Bayern: "I just joined the club but I had some time to speak to the people inside the cub. I am starting to understand the recruitment process. The only thing I can say is, the fact I am here means they are doing a very good job!"

And on his style of play: "As a coach, you have to coach who you are as a person. I grew up on the streets of Brussels... I want the players of Bayern Munich to be brave and have personality on the ball. I want the team to be aggressive. I want the team to represent my character, to be brave and aggressive."

Vincent Kompany had it relatively comfortable in front of a handful of journalists for pre-match news conferences in the sanctuary of Burnley's training ground on the banks of the River Calder, where he spoke about being a "zen master" with his cool demeanour.

Now he will need all that confidence as he takes on a totally different beast, with the glare of the world upon him as Bayern look to wrestle the Bundesliga crown back from Bayer Leverkusen and aim to add to their six European Cups.

The dressing room egos will be in complete contrast too as he seeks to command the respect of figures such as England captain Harry Kane, and revered German trio Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller and Joshua Kimmich.

Olympiakos started the season in the Europa League but after coming third in their group - behind West Ham and Freiburg - they went into the knockout round play-offs for the Europa Conference League.

The Greek side have had three permanent coaches during the course of the season, with Spanish boss Jose Luis Mendilibar appointed in February, and they overcame Ferencvaros, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Fenerbahce and Aston Villa to reach the final in their own country.

This is Ayoub El Kaabi's first season in European football and the 30-year-old Morocco striker hit the ground running, becoming the first player to score more than 10 goals in the knockout stage of a single European campaign (11) since both Derlei (Porto) and Henrik Larsson (Celtic) scored 11 in 2002-03.

Including the Europa League, El Kaabi had 16 goals in Europe overall. Only Radamel Falcao (18 in 2010-11 for Porto) and Cristiano Ronaldo (17 in 2013-14 and 16 in 2015-16, both for Real Madrid) have scored more European competition goals in a single campaign.

Olympiakos' former Manchester City forward Stevan Jovetic told TNT Sports: "[It's] amazing, for Olympiakos and me. Really proud of my guys. We did great all year and deserved it. I have to compliment Fiorentina, two years in a row. A shame for them."

On the long VAR wait for the goal to be awarded: "I didn't know if it was for a foul or offside but once he said offside I knew it was a goal."

On the celebrations: "It will be amazing, I can't wait."

Now then, let's get back to Olympiakos' moment of history last night as they beat Fiorentina to win the Europa Conference League final.

Ayoub El Kaabi's late winner in extra time meant that 99 years after the establishment of the club, Olympiakos became the first club from Greece to win a major European trophy.

The last time a European final was decided in extra-time was also in 2013-14, when Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid 4-1 in Lisbon (1-1 after normal time).

Having won the 2022-23 Europa League with Sevilla, Olympiakos coach Jose Luis Mendilibar became the second manager to win a European final in consecutive seasons in charge of different clubs - after Rafael Benitez (2003-04 UEFA Cup for Valencia, 2004-05 Champions League for Liverpool).

After losing to West Ham in last year's Europa Conference League final, Fiorentina became the first club to be runners-up in the same European competition in consecutive seasons since Benfica lost the final of the Europa League in 2012-13 and 2013-14.

That, of course, is one of the seven European Cup/Champions League finals to be played at Wembley then. England's national stadium will host its eighth final on Saturday. How many of the previous seven did you manage to remember? Here's the full list:

    • 1963 - AC Milan 2–1 Benfica
    • 1968 - Manchester United 4–1 Benfica (AET)
    • 1971 - Ajax 2–0 Panathinaikos
    • 1978 - Liverpool 1–0 Club Brugge
    • 1992 - Barcelona 1–0 Sampdoria (AET)
    • 2011 - Barcelona 3–1 Manchester United
    • 2013 - Bayern Munich 2–1 Borussia Dortmund

So, two things I've learned today... Real Madrid legend Ferenc Puskas was the Panathinaikos coach at Wembley in 1971. Even if Real win at Wembley this Saturday, Jude Bellingham will have to go some way to match the Hungarian great as he helped the Spanish giants win three European Cups.

And because of Ajax's victory in London, there is a street named after Wembley in Amsterdam, on the site of Ajax's former stadium, De Meer Stadion, which is now a housing development. Several streets in the area are named after famous football stadia from around the world.

    Panathinaikos were the first

    Alan, Scotland

Panathinaikos played Ajax in the European Cup final at Wembley in, I believe, 1970 or 1971. The reason I know this is that my school ran a trip to the match so I actually went to the game. The Greek fans created a vibrant atmosphere, setting off green flares and making a real noise. Ajax ran out winners, I seem to remember 1-0, inspired by a certain Mr Cruyff I seem to remember.

    Richard, Somerset

Me and my were 14 and 12, we had just moved from Kilburn to Wembley, we bunked into Wembley late afternoon, hid, until we heard the Ajax fans sounding those klaxons. Ajax beat Panathanikos 2-0. Cruyff, what a player.

    Anon

Well done folks... a crowd of 83,179 watched Ajax beat Panathanikos 2-0 in 1971 to win the first of three straight European titles for the Dutch side. They were led by Pep Guardiola's mentor Johan Cruyff, although their goalscorers at Wembley were Dick van Dijk (not the actor of Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang fame!) and Arie Haan.
