Rory Smith, chief Soccer Correspondent for The Athletic, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live about how promoted teams can stay up: "You need to find a couple of jewels to hang everything on," he said. "You also need one of those teams - West Ham, Everton, Crystal Palace, Brentford or Wolves - to do everything wrong."

  2. 'Southampton panicked and spent over the odds'published at 10:39 British Summer Time 8 April

    Jason Burt
Telegraph journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

For Southampton, they went from having someone like Russell Martin in charge who has a specific style of football. Then, bringing in a coach like Ivan Juric is a huge gear change.

To suddenly try and change mid-season is almost impossible because it means a club has no real pattern in what they want to achieve.

Southampton panicked and spent a load of money over the odds. Nottingham Forest did the same, they gambled but got away with it. Sometimes it does work which makes other clubs think that they can do the same. Clubs come into the Premier League and think they have to spend and they end up spending very badly. Southampton spent money on players that were frankly, sub-standard.

I do think there should be another division between the Championship and the Premier League - Premier League 2 or something like that. The gulf between the two divisions is ridiculous. The fact the PL punishes teams that have just gone up (Forest) for overspending makes it even more difficult.

  5. How often do relegated teams bounce straight back?published at 10:23 British Summer Time 8 April

The same can be said for the number of teams bouncing straight back to the Premier League following relegation to the Championship

While the numbers aren't quite as high as those in the previous post, they are still significant, and are once again growing.

Over the last 15 years, 33% of teams relegated from the Premier League immediately earned promotion back the following year.

That number has increased to 37% over the last 10 years.

As it stands, two of the three of last season's relegated teams in Burnley and Sheffield United are on course for automatic promotion back into the Premier League for 2025-26.

  6. How often do promoted teams go straight back down?published at 10:19 British Summer Time 8 April

There has always been a bit of yoyo effect between the Premier League and Championship but the numbers have increased further in recent years.

Over the last 15 years, 42% of teams promoted to the Premier League from the Championship were relegated after just one season in the top flight.

That number has increased to 50% over the course of the last 10 years.

All three promoted teams rarely stay up, but it did happen as recently as 2022-2023 with Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest and Fulham retaining their status.

Before that we saw Brighton, Huddersfield and Newcastle do so in 2017-18.

Stats exclude Southampton who have recently been relegated.

What's life like at the bottom of the Premier League?

    • Last night's defeat to Newcastle makes it eight home games in a row without a goal for Leicester
    • Southampton the fastest club ever to be relegated from the Premier League
    • Ipswich are on their longest home losing streak since 1963.

Technically all still to play for, but with 12 points between the bottom three and Wolves, it's more of a gulf than a gap.

So how are you feeling, then? I'm talking to Ipswich, Leicester and Southampton fans. Is that you, and if so what is your mood right now?

These are clubs with a long history and the silverware to go with it. So, what's gone wrong? Who are you blaming - the club or the system? What glimmers of hope are you seeing.

Talk to me about the journey - life at the bottom of the Premier League?

Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Jamie Vardy are now responsible for the longest goalless home run in Premier League history. Ruud and Jamie. The guy who used to hold the record for most consecutive premier league games scored in… and the guy who broke his record. The irony of Leicester’s record-breaking night simply cannot be understated!

Steve Cooper was possibly the only manager prepared to take on Leicester City whilst under the threat of points reduction. If appointing him was wrong, sacking him was worse. He kept a newly promoted Forest up, and may have just about kept us up

Leicester went from Maresca, who pays a passing Guardiola style, to Cooper who plays a counter-attacking Mourinho style, to RVN, who plays a fast paced Fergie style. This is all in less than 1 year. No wonder the players haven't got a clue what to do.

The financial chasm between the Premier League and the Championship is now so vast that instant relegation is more or less certain for promoted clubs. If the Premier League cannot reach agreement on how to spread their enormous wealth by allowing it to trickle down the pyramid, then the case for an independent football regulator cannot be denied any longer. If the vast fortunes of the Premier League are not shared more fairly, then the top flight should be made to do so through legislation. This is the only way to avoid this current cycle of promotion and relegation, as the Premier League will never agree to do this unless they're made to.

  15. 'Goals a confidence thing' - Van Nistelrooypublished at 09:20 British Summer Time 8 April

    Leicester City 0-3 Newcastle

    Leicester City

Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, speaking to Sky Sports on his side not scoring for eight successive home games: "It shows. It's a confidence thing. In the second half you can see when there is no pressure anymore it frees people up. Then you see some reasonable football. When the pressure is on it becomes very difficult. With an early couple of goals it collapses."

Van Nistelrooy knows a thing about Premier League goals, he bagged 95 in 150 league games for Manchester United.

Is it just me who is delighted at The Foxes demise after the way they treated Steve Cooper? Seems like he’s hardly getting a mention but they were 16th when he was finally given the chop (the fans wanted him gone earlier), and he would’ve given them a much better chance of staying up. How many Leicester fans would admit this might have been the wrong decision?

Striker Jordan Ayew and 20-year-old attacker Facundo Buonanotte are the next highest on four.

  19. No Leicester league goal since 26 Janpublished at 08:56 British Summer Time 8 April

    Leicester 0-3 Newcastle

    Leicester City

Leicester's last Premier League goal came in a 2-1 win over Tottenham on 26 January. That means Ruud van Nistelrooy's side have drawn a blank in eight successive league games, which equates to 12 hours of football.

Only Crystal Palace in January 1995 have endured a longer run in the competition's history (nine games).

There is a pattern forming and it doesn't matter who manages the promoted sides, it looks like its now the norm for the 3 promoted teams to go straight back down. As much as people want to make news and find reasons, the only thing what is causing it is money. The richer are getting richer and the gap just get bigger. Football is changing and with regards to relegation from the Premier League, the 3 that go up this season will come straight back down and I don't need to be an ex player or pundit to predict that. I'm thinking the Premier League will want to reduce to 18 soon and then move to one up and one down. Sad, sad times for the real fans who buy tickets.
