1. Could Merino fire Arsenal back into this tie?published at 09:38 British Summer Time

    Arsenal 0-1 Paris St-Germain

Sadly for Arsenal, they have no such fit centre-forward in their ranks at present JD.

But Thomas Partey's return for the second leg in Paris would allow Mikel Arteta to push Mikel Merino further forward into that false nine role he has been operating in.

Merino has scored seven goals since being switched to that position in February, following injuries to regular forwards Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz.

Could the Spaniard be the answer in Paris?

Arsenal are turning into something of a Jekyll and Hyde team, who can be brilliant one week and then average the next. I genuinely believed that the way Madrid were brushed aside, they would've dealt similarly with PSG, but their need for a dedicated striker is glaring. They haven't got a physical centre-forward who can assert themselves in the penalty area, and rely solely on intricate build up, but have not got the sort of deadly finisher they need.

Arsenal having the belief they can win in Paris is obviously one thing, but coming up with a tactical plan to make that happen is an entirely different matter.

We will have a look at some of the finer details Mikel Arteta will be considering before that second leg, most notably how to get creative players like Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka firing at the Parc des Princes.

    Wayne Rooney
Former Man Utd striker on Amazon Prime

Former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney said on Amazon Prime that Arsenal need to have belief they can turn this tie around in the second leg in Paris:

"I think Arsenal are used to that over the years. They get to a certain stage and everything falls away. That is not me being negative.

"What Arsenal need to do is to go there with a belief they can win. I want Arsenal to win, I want them to go to the final, I hope they win the competition, but they have to go into that game with a belief.

"You've seen with the PSG away fans tonight, Arsenal need to be ready for a real hostile atmosphere. They have to be patient and they have to slow the game down at the right times and when they get their chances, be clinical. That's the only way they'll win over there."

  5. What's coming up?published at 09:11 British Summer Time

We will continue to bring you a combination of reaction and analysis throughout the morning following Arsenal's 1-0 Champions League semi-final first-leg defeat to Paris St-Germain at Emirates Stadium.

We just heard from Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya on his belief that the Gunners can win the second leg in Paris next Wednesday.

Former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney spoke about this in Tuesday night's TV coverage on Amazon Prime.

Rooney famously helped United win at Arsenal in the second leg of the 2008-09 semi-final to help them reach the final that season...

  6. 'We can win against any team' - Rayapublished at 08:59 British Summer Time

    Arsenal 0-1 PSG

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, speaking to Amazon Prime, is firmly in the believer camp: "They dominated the first 15-20 minutes but after that we dominated most of the game, created the chances. They are a top team but credit to the players for the effort - we could've won the game. They had that chance and put it in the net, this is football. We have showed in the season we can win away games too."

On next week's second leg: "Try to approach the game the same way. We played well, we put them on the backfoot, hurt them and we created a lot of chances as well. We know we can win against any team."

On his save from Desire Doue: "That's what I'm there for. To help the team and luckily enough I managed to save it and happy with that. Let's go next week in Paris."

There is a distinct divide this morning between the believers and what I think you can probably call the pragmatists.

No prizes for guessing which camp Elliott falls in.

We asked you earlier whether you believed Arsenal could get back in this tie, or if PSG would finish the job in the return leg in Paris.

At the time of typing, 800 of you believed there was still hope for the Gunners, while 1,145 sided with Elliott.

Those were the words of midfielder Rice in the Arsenal pre-match huddle that were picked up by the TV cameras.

The fear that Arsenal would not have the ball played out as the hosts failed to get control in the match, with the away side dominating the ball for large parts of the first half.

Arsenal did get a foothold in the game in the second period and PSG, despite their fast start, finished the match on 52% possession.

Mikel Arteta said that it is "impossible" to control PSG for 95 minutes and that it was the "small margins" in the game that did not allow his team to pick up a positive result.

As a Marseille fan, it pains me to admit it but PSG have been unplayable since January. Watching Ligue 1 week in week out, it is by far the best version of PSG since QSI took over in 2011.

You could look at Thomas Partey not being there as a reason as to why [Bukayo] Saka wasn't getting the ball.

I don't want to go too deep into why Partey is important but it was more the balance. Playing with a different type of feel and balance can disrupt the way you feed those key players the ball.

We’re absolutely still in it. Partey back will make all the difference as Odegaard will have less on his defensive workload. Makes me think back to when we beat Bayern away 2-0 and missed out on away goals. Hoping for a 1-2 turnaround and through in ET in Paris!

    Daniel, London

The game highlighted two things for me: 1. Crucial to extend Partey's contract, 2. Arteta's in-game management still needs to improve. Odegaard should've been off earlier, MLS should've been moved to midfield to release Rice.

Thomas Partey was suspended after picking up a yellow card in the second leg of Arsenal's quarter-final against Real Madrid

As Nina rightly pointed out there, Arsenal were missing midfield lynchpin Thomas Partey, who was suspended for the first leg, but will be available again for the second leg in Paris.

The biggest challenge for Arteta coming into this match was how he was going to set up in the absence of Partey.

The 31-year-old is a key part of the Gunners midfield and picked up a cheap yellow card in the final few minutes of the match with Real Madrid in the quarter-final which meant he missed this game.

With the injuries Arsenal have, including to fellow defensive midfielder Jorginho, and with Mikel Merino playing as a central striker in recent weeks, Partey's absence caused Arteta to shuffle his team around.

Merino dropped into his natural midfield position, Declan Rice moved deeper to a number six role and away from the number eight role in which he produced two player-of-the-match performances against Real Madrid, while Leandro Trossard came in as striker.

PSG were dominant from the start of the match and had 75% possession in the opening 15 minutes, taking the lead in the fourth minute with an Ousmane Dembele strike.

The question Arteta will be asking is - if Partey had been in the team, would he have been able to stop Dembele receiving the ball before giving PSG the lead?

As much as I would love to hope that we beat PSG, I don’t think we can turn the tie around. Very lucky we weren’t three or four nil down by the end. Odegaard basically non-existent. Desperately hoping Partey’s inclusion will be the magic we need.

    Nina

Arteta asked all the fans to turn up with their boots, and they did. Shame Arsenal didn't bother turning up. They looked clueless in the final third. Raya was Arsenal's most attacking player. Disappointed and frustrated Gooner.

John Murray has put the size of the task facing Arsenal into context.

But Paris St-Germain's hero from the first leg, Ousmane Dembele, could an injury worry for the second leg next week, according to manager Luis Enrique.

Dembele was withdrawn in the 70th minute moments after he had appeared to go down clutching his hamstring.

"I don't know," Enrique said, when asked if the forward will feature in Paris.

"He'll undergo tests tomorrow. It's not serious, it's something very minor, but he's probably a doubt for the second leg."

    Arsenal 0-1 Paris St-Germain

    John Murray
Chief football correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live

I know it's only half-time in the tie but having been there this year with Manchester City, Liverpool and Aston Villa, PSG are almost irresistible in the Parc des Princes and I say almost because Liverpool went and won there, but that was a real freak win.

I think it's going to be really tough for Arsenal next week. A 1-0 start for PSG at the Parc des Princes - you can tell what I'm thinking - it's very unlikely.
