As ever, there were some fascinating twists and turns that we didn't expect this evening, and some that we did.

Delight for Stockport, who held their nerve in a tricky game at Colchester, but rivals Wrexham and Mansfield also boosted their promotion chances.

The League One play-off race is also delicately poised when we return with a full set of fixtures on Saturday.

There are still more midweek games to come tomorrow, including six in the Championship, with Ipswich aiming to return to the top of the league when they host Watford.

Derby have a brilliant chance to strengthen their hopes of finishing in the top two in League One, with Peterborough not giving up their hopes of doing so either.

Join us again tomorrow, until then goodnight!

Take a screenshot, Stockport fans. It's happening.

After rolling their sleeves up to see off Colchester 2-1 tonight, County need just a point from their final four games to ensure promotion to the third tier for the first time in 16 years. Their superior goal difference means they're probably already there, but a point will make it absolutely safe.

Wrexham look likely to join them after their 4-1 romp at home to Crawley this evening - they are five points ahead of fourth-placed MK Dons, who have just three games remaining, the next of which is against Mansfield.

The Stags returned to the top three with a 1-0 win over Forest Green and have a game in hand which could take them into second on goal difference.

Crewe all-but ensured a play-off place with three games to spare with a 1-0 win at Morecambe, who lost ground in their race for the top seven.

Crawley remain seventh and are still three points ahead of Walsall after both sides lost to Wrexham and Doncaster respectively. In-form Rovers are just four points adrift of the play-offs with four games to play.

Sutton were the big winners at the foot of the table, without even kicking a ball.

Forest Green remain bottom after their defeat at Mansfield while battling Colchester had nothing to show for their efforts as they lost 2-1 at home to Stockport in the first of their three games in hand on the Londoners.

Sutton have a precarious one-point advantage but remain just four points behind Grimsby themselves, after the Mariners went down 1-0 at Harrogate.

Cheltenham remain two points from safety after their 1-0 loss at home to already-down Carlisle.

The Cumbrians are playing for pride and could yet lift themselves off the bottom of the table.

One place above Paul Simpson's side, Fleetwood are in a more precarious position than Cheltenham, having played a game more than the Robins, with a six-point gap to 20th place.

Another thing pointing in Cheltenham's favour is their marginally better goal difference.

Barnsley are now eight points off the automatic promotion spots in League One with just four games to go, however they do have a decent buffer of six points inside the play-off positions.

Stevenage join Blackpool as the big winners tonight, having halved their gaps to the top six.

One notable thing though is that both have an inferior goal difference compared to Oxford and Lincoln.

    Blackpool 1-0 Fleetwood

Blackpool are now three points off the play-off spots, thanks to Jake Beesley's first-half goal.

The Seasiders could have been punished for wastefulness, particularly after Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch tipped away Shayne Lavery's penalty.

But the visitors just weren't strong enough in attack and remain six points from safety in League One.

    FT: Stevenage 2-1 Barnsley

    Dean Thompson
    BBC Three Counties Radio commentator

Three very important points for Stevenage, it breaks that winless run.

It was breathless at times at the start of the second half, but the defence held firm.

Burton at the weekend won't be easy, but going into that is made easier by tonight's result.

    Stevenage 2-1 Barnsley

A delightful hooked finish from Adam Phillips put promotion-chasing Barnsley in front against the run of play, but Stevenage ultimately deserved their comeback in this match.

Jamie Reid levelled the game on the stroke of the half-time whistle, before Dan Butler smashed in a 25-yard free-kick.

The Tykes thought they might have had a late penalty when Devante Cole went down inside the area, but it is looking like they will have to settle for an almost-secure play-off spot.

Stevenage, just like Blackpool, have used tonight's opportunity brilliantly to close the gap to those play-off positions to three points, though they have played a game more than the sides above them.

    Colchester 1-2 Stockport

Barring the most improbably mathematical miracle in the next couple of weeks, Stockport County will play in League One next season.

Paddy Madden's winner, and Ben Hinchliffe's penalty save, have helped them ride their luck to three precious points at Colchester.

They are nine points clear of fourth-placed MK Dons, who have three games to play and a 26-goal difference gap to close, meaning the Hatters can seal promotion with a point when they host Morecambe at Edgeley Park on Saturday.

Here's how the League Two table stands right at this minute...

If Stockport hang on to their 2-1 lead at Colchester, they would not be guaranteed automatic promotion - but they can start ordering the champagne and some ice.

It would take four straight defeats for the Hatters, three straight wins for MK Dons and a 27-goal swing in goal difference for the Dons to overtake Dave Challinor's side before the end of the season.
