What I am learning from today's responses is that teams really should take more low-cost risks with unknown players rather than paying £60m+ for well-known players who may or may not work out!

There were reports that Liverpool have approached Eintracht Frankfurt over a possible deal for forward Hugo Ekitike, who is also of interest to Newcastle, in our gossip column this morning.

David Ornstein, once of this parish and now at The Athletic, is also now reporting, external Liverpool's approach, with the Reds having met resistance from Newcastle for their striker Alexander Isak.

It's all the drama, Mick. I just love it.

  5. Brentford’s biggest buyspublished at 15:16 British Summer Time 16 July

    Tom McCoy
    BBC Sport journalist

Brentford have had a £35m bid for Ipswich’s Omari Hutchinson rejected and if they are to sign the Ipswich winger the west London club will have to break their transfer record.

The only player they have paid £30m or more for is Brazilian striker Igor Thiago, who has started just one Premier League game since joining last summer because of a knee injury. Forward Kevin Schade briefly became the Bees’ record buy when his loan move from Freiburg was made permanent two years ago, but that deal was eclipsed when Nathan Collins arrived from Wolves for £23m a month later.

While Brentford’s recruitment has largely been funded by player sales, their spending shows just how far they have progressed under owner Matthew Benham. It was as recently as 2014 that they made their first seven-figure signing, paying £1m to Leyton Orient for Moses Odubajo.

  7. Hutchinson the man to replace Mbuemo?published at 15:09 British Summer Time 16 July

Whilst Bryan Mbuemo's potential move to Manchester United continues to stall, talks remain ongoing and the player is keen on a move to Old Trafford.

It is perhaps no surprise that the Bees are pursuing Omari Hutchinson, a player who occupies the same area of the pitch as Mbuemo.

Both players played predominantly down the right hand side in the Premier League last season and have similar attributes.

Whilst Mbuemo managed 1915 touches last season in comparison to Hutchinson's 1399, a move to West London would allow the 21-year-old to see more of the ball and show his attacking quality.

Hutchinson managed 51 dribbles to Mbuemo's 52 in his first top flight season and that shows he can match his desire to take on defenders.

One of the more interesting ones that got away of late, was Osimhen to the Premier League, he looked set to go but it never materialised and instead he went to Galatasaray. A shame because I think he'd be fun to watch in the Prem.

  9. Dribbles, chances and Premier League potentialpublished at 15:04 British Summer Time 16 July

There's a reason why Brentford are interested in signing Omari Hutchinson as he has the ability to create chances for other while also taking players on and beating them.

At the U21 European Championships Hutchinson was the only player to create 10+ chances and complete 10+ dribbles in the tournament.

Pedro Neto, Rodri and Dani Ceballos are among those to have achieved the feat at previous Euros.

  10. Why do Brentford want Ipswich winger Hutchinson?published at 15:00 British Summer Time 16 July

    Tom McCoy
    BBC Sport journalist

Brentford have reportedly bid £35m for Ipswich’s Omari Hutchinson, who could arrive as a replacement for Manchester United target Bryan Mbeumo. The winger only managed three top-flight goals and two assists as the Tractor Boys were relegated last season so why are the Bees prepared to pay a club-record fee to bring the 21-year-old to west London?

Hutchinson displayed only fleeting moments of quality as Ipswich struggled last term but put himself in the shop window at this summer’s European Under-21 Championship, where he was a key part of the England side that retained their title, scoring in the final against Germany.

Deployed on the left wing, a role he has rarely played for the Suffolk club despite being left footed, Hutchinson was a constant menace with his direct running. He attempted 29 dribbles, at least six more than any other player, including nine in the semi-final against the Netherlands, when he repeatedly beat his opposite man.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea youngster also had 35 touches in the opposition box at the tournament, second only to rising German star Nick Woltemade, and created 11 chances, the joint-third highest total.

It was harder for Hutchinson to make the same kind of impact in the Premier League, with his team often penned into their own half and struggling to get the ball to their attacking players. Fielded either as a number 10 or on the right, he nonetheless showed a willingness to run with the ball and attempted 147 ‘take-ons’ (trying to dribble past an opponent), which was the league’s fifth highest tally.

Last term was only Hutchinson’s second season of senior football. He was Ipswich’s young player of the year whilst on loan from Chelsea in 2023-24, joining permanently for an initial £20m after promotion was secured. The step-up in quality was undoubtedly a challenge for him but Brentford, who are renowned for their data-led approach to recruitment, have seen enough promise to try to prize him away from Portman Road.

Hutchinson signed his first professional contract for Arsenal in November 2020 but would make his senior football debut for London rivals Chelsea in January 2023 at the age of 19

After just one appearance, he was loaned to Championship club Ipswich Town for the following season where he would begin to make his mark.

Hutchinson scored ten goals in 44 league appearances as the Tractor Boys were promoted back to the Premier League for the first time in 22 years and became only the fifth team in history to secure back-to-back promotions from the third tier.

Ipswich signed him permanently for £20m last year but was unable to stop the club getting relegated in his first season in the top flight.

Now just 21, he crucial role as part of the England team that won the Under-21 Euros over the summer.

Bournemouth's £25m deal for goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic means only three Premier League clubs have spent less than £20m on transfer fees so far this summer.

Aston Villa's total outlay is around £6.4m on young Turkish defender Yasin Ozcan and back-up goalkeeper Marco Bizot, Crystal Palace paid around £2m for left-back Borna Sosa and Fulham are yet to make any signings.
