  3. New Nwaneri deal closepublished at 09:55 British Summer Time 16 July

    Alex Howell
    BBC football news reporter

Arsenal are getting close to agreeing a new contract with 18-year-old Ethan Nwaneri.

My colleague Sami Mokbel reported a couple of days ago that talks over a new deal were set to accelerate and an agreement is close.

The youngster's current deal is set to expire next season.

Nwaneri had an excellent breakthrough season for the Gunners scoring nine goals in 37 appearances in all competitions.

The midfielder was also part of the England U21 side that won the Euros in Slovakia last month.

BBC Sport previously reported that the deal will be for five years or four with the option of a further year.

We've got a bit of contract news from Arsenal to bring you now, plus the latest on the Luis Diaz situation at Liverpool.

With the departure of Darwin Nunez still a possibility, Arne Slot could be looking for reinforcements at the top end of the pitch - despite Mo Salah's 29 Premier League goals last season.

With Ekitike and Isak grabbing the headlines at the moment, who else is out there?

Talksport, external reported that Liverpool's representatives had met with Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta in Paris to discuss a move to Anfield.

But they have also been linked with several other players, including the likes of Ollie Watkins, Victor Osimhen and Yoane Wissa.

The one that got away for me was Rooney to Newcastle. It was all agreed and we, for an unknown reason took our time, Man Utd swooped in. It would have been brilliant to see Rooney in that team with Bobby as manager.

  7. Gossip: Liverpool to rival Newcastle for Ekitikepublished at 09:36 British Summer Time 16 July

On the topic of Hugo Ekitike...

Sky Sports, external are reporting that Liverpool are expected to rival Newcastle United for Ekitike after being told Alexander Isak is not for sale in this window.

They suggest that Newcastle value Isak at £150m and are not considering selling him, with Liverpool now turning their attentions to the Eintracht Frankfurt forward.

Liverpool are currently exploring the parameters for other centre-forward targets, as they look to add depth to their attacking options.

  10. A 'rangy running style' and plenty of pacepublished at 09:25 British Summer Time 16 July

Ekitike Van de VenImage source, Getty Images

Despite standing 6ft 3in tall, his rangy running style covers ground quickly and his top speed of 35.5 km/h placed him high on the list of the Bundesliga’s quickest attacking players last season.

He used that pace to good effect, attempting 126 dribbles, the league’s fifth highest total, typically collecting the ball in wide areas and driving inside towards the box.

Should Newcastle win the race to sign him, Ekitike will join Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga at St James’ Park, making the Magpies quite the handful for opposition defenders next season.

There's always one that we go back to in our heads and wonder, "what if?" isn't there?

    The one that got away.

Football transfers, I mean football transfers!

I'm not saying the Ekitike and Isak stuff is going to end badly, but it has got me thinking.

Who is one signing your club were linked with in the past that never came off and it still bugs you to this day?

Or even as a neutral - one big move in the football world that never happened and you really wish it did.

I'm thinking Steven Gerrard to Chelsea (sorry Liverpool fans), Lionel Messi to the Premier League - that kind of thing.

  12. Ekitike outperforms Wirtz and Yamalpublished at 09:08 British Summer Time 16 July

    Stats on young players

Should Newcastle or Liverpool succeed with a move for Ekitike they would land one of Europe’s brightest young talents.

Only three players aged 23 or under were directly involved in more goals than Ekitike in the top five European leagues last season.

The Frenchman scored 15 top-flight goals and assisted eight, with his combined tally matching that of Cole Palmer and one more than Liverpool's record signing Florian Wirtz and Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal managed – certainly good company to be keep.

  13. 'Ekitike is versatile and smart'published at 08:59 British Summer Time 16 July

    Constantin Eckner
    German football writer

Ekitike's tactical understanding is one of his great strengths.

He served as a lone striker as well as part of a two-striker set-up under Frankfurt manager Dino Toppmoller.

During the first half of last season, Ekitike and Omar Marmoush formed a fearsome strike pairing which was torn apart when Manchester City signed Marmoush for £63m in January.

Subsequently, Frankfurt did not acquire a replacement for Marmoush and instead changed the tactical set-up, with Ekitike the lone striker.

He is versatile and not just a striker that feels at home inside the box. Ekitike might not be the most dynamic player, but he can get past defenders with smart moves.

It seems as if the Bundesliga side are fine with selling yet another top player to a Premier League club.

Their current model is that they find these gems, try to develop them and then fund their next signings through the money they generate.

  14. What Ekitike would bring to Newcastle - the statspublished at 08:48 British Summer Time 16 July

Signing Ekitike could give Newcastle a pre-season selection conundrum.

The statistics do suggest Isak and Ekitike have a lot of overlap in their play and have the same best position - playing as a lone striker.

Isak played 98% of his Premier League minutes last season as a central striker, only briefly featuring on the left of a front three.

His central role in Newcastle's attack is surely not to be messed with, given a return of 23 goals in 34 games.

However, a similar argument could be made for Ekitike. He scored 15 league goals in 31 starts for Frankfurt last season and played as a striker 95% of the time.

Newcastle are also well-stocked in wide areas, with Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy and new £55m signing Anthony Elanga.

Touch maps for both forwards show they share a tendency to get on the ball in the inside left channel, but with Ekitike roaming more freely and a little deeper.

This perhaps offers encouragement to those who believe they can play alongside each other, with Ekitike at times dropping back to link with the midfielders.

He is a provider as well as a scorer, ranking in the top 6% among forwards for creating chances in last season's Bundesliga.

  15. 'The message is still that Isak's not for sale'published at 08:38 British Summer Time 16 July

    Matthew Raisbeck
    BBC Newcastle Sport

It's not a given that Ekitike will play second fiddle to Isak - in fact there is a hope that they could play together.

Newcastle like versatility. They tried to sign Chelsea's Joao Pedro this summer, who is another versatile striker.

I don't expect them to switch formation for the first game of the season, but this move would allow a greater scope to change tactics throughout the game.

The message is still that Isak is not for sale. Newcastle are determined to keep him and don't need to sell for financial reasons.

They are in the Champions League next season and want to be competitive in the league and all the cups so, even before Callum Wilson left, they were always going to need another striker.

Ekitike has the profile they want and allows the team to be so much more flexible tactically.

Newcastle have quality but often at times last season lacked depth. This signing would tick both of those boxes.
