Summary

  1. 'Our team spirit is natural not forced'published at 13:15 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February

Chelsea v Liverpool (Carabao Cup final, Sun, 15:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Maurico Pochettino on whether their's been a mentality change among his players: "It's not fair to say only mentality. Always with young teams need time to be more mature and improve in different areas. I think when you talk about to play football and compete, it's in a whole area you to improve. Now the team is improving. Maybe we have the chance to be more consistent and I think the team is competing really well.

"I think for me, it's not about the change. The transformation of the team and compete in a differents way. To be more moature and have this a type of process. You need this to happen and to really wake up about the situation, or realise, that when you experience some moments, you have possibility to be and behave different. The team always needs to learn from the good and not so good experiences. I think for us in a moment it was positive.

"After Liverpool, the result was completely unfair because if you watch the game, there were a few penalty [decisions] which would have changed the [outcome] game. Maybe that was good for us, to feel the pain, negative situation, and to be stronger now and to find the way to compete better and to start to see that we need to live in a different way. The spirit of the team you can see. You can see it before the start of the game they are together. Always that needs to be natural, you cannot force it. If they arrive naturally they are strong, but when not forced."

  2. 'We have worked on penalties'published at 13:08 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February

Chelsea v Liverpool (Carabao Cup final, Sun, 15:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

Maurico Pochettino on the possibility of a shootout after Chelsea twice lost to Liverpool on penalties in Wembley finals during the 2021-22 season: "We are regular [practising] this weeks. Always shoot penalties in training. Some coaches say you cannot replicate this stress in training as the same as the competition. But of course, it's part of our idea to practise penalties."

On whether he has decided who will play in goal at Wembley: "Yes. 99%. Have I told the players the team? Not yet, because of connection and communication. I think things could happen. My team is in my head. I prefer [to tell them] tomorrow or maybe after tomorrow. Because if I say tomorrow you will try to find some more information!"

  3. 'If they are not favourites, we are not favourites!'published at 13:00 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February

Maurico Pochettino on Jurgen Klopp saying his Chelsea side are favourites to win the Carabao Cup: "Yes. Because he's one of the best - with Pep [Guardiola] - coaches in the world. He's clever enough. He knows that when you arrive and play a final, circumstances can happen. If they are not favourites, we are not favourites! It's a final you cannot say there's a favourite!

"But for me, I think Liverpool are the favourites. I think it's their eighth year and the last few years they have experience to compete like a team, be involved in different finals. I think for many of our players they are new into the Premier League and into the Carabao Cup. For some of them it's maybe their first final. He [Klopp] is clever enough to say 'it's 50-50'. He knows this."

  4. Hojlund out of the derby?published at 12:58 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February

That is devastating news for Erik ten Hag.

Rasmus Hojlund has scored in six consecutive games and was leading Manchester United's charge up the Premier League.

That timescale means Hojlund will not only miss tomorrow's game against Fulham but also Wednesday's FA Cup fifth-round tie at Nottingham Forest and next weekend's Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium.

The obvious alternative would be Anthony Martial but he is also injured, so the chances are Marcus Rashford will be asked to play as a central striker.

  5. Chelsea have 'clicked' since Anfield maulingpublished at 12:56 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February

Chelsea v Liverpool (Carabao Cup final, Sun, 15:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Maurico Pochettino on their Anfield thrashing by Liverpool: "It's true this is different. It's never the same approach playing in the Premier League and in the final and in a neutral place like Wembley is different. You always learn from the games you play, too many things. Of course we arrive in this game with different circumstances and now it is difficult to compare and say that it will have influence on the games that we played in the past.

"What you learn is Liverpool are a competitive team. They can play well, so well, not so well, not so good. But they are always competitive and we need to match that.

"We need to manage moments during the games and I think in the last few weeks we learn a lot. We are in a good moment, arrive in a good condition and I think the games against Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Manchester City provided the team with confidence and trust.

"The team starts to be awake in the competition. It's a click to change that we are missing in the early part of the competition."

"I think it's a dream for us, the coaching staff. Of course it's a possibility. We have 90 minutes to achieve that and the team are going to fight. The team is ready. We are going to be very competitive. It's an amazing chance for us."

  12. Which Liverpool and Chelsea will turn up?published at 12:32 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February

Chelsea v Liverpool (Carabao Cup final, Sunday 15:00 GMT)

    Chris SuttonImage source, BBC Sport

I was at Anfield a few weeks ago, when Liverpool absolutely thrashed Chelsea 4-1.To say it was a demolition does not do it justice.

It was billed then as a dress rehearsal for this final and, when I was thinking about it afterwards, I just thought there is no way you would give the Blues any chance whatsoever based on what happened in that game.

But then you see Chelsea hold Manchester City last weekend, when they almost held on at 1-0 and, with better finishing, had the chances to go further in front.

Meanwhile, with Liverpool, there are injury doubts over so many of their forwards, including Mohamed Salah. Is he fit, or not? We don't know.

Liverpool were woeful in the first half against Luton on Wednesday, then wonderful after the break. We will have to wait and see which Liverpool turn up, but the same can obviously be said about Chelsea.

So, the question is whether I am going to end up being hoodwinked by that display against City, or whether the tide really is about to turn for Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino.

I am not convinced that the latter is the case. As I said at the very start, I was tempted to go with Chelsea... but I have talked myself out of it.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-2 (after extra-time)
