Mainz are interested in signing Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg but the valuations of the two clubs are too far apart for any deal to be done at present.

The 22-year-old spent the 2023-24 season on loan at the German club and made 33 league appearances, scoring three goals, as he helped them secure their Bundesliga status.

Mainz clearly want him back, while Liverpool reportedly want about £20m for the Dutchman, who joined them from PEC Zwolle in June 2019.

My earliest Euros memory was England losing 2-1 to Sweden in 1992 (after two unmemorable 0-0 draws to France and Denmark in the group stage). Graham Taylor took Gary Lineker off when England needed to score to stay in the tournament, ending his international career. My 15-year-old self had never been so angry or upset!

Euro 96. For me the best England side we've had. Battered the Netherlands, more than matched Spain and Germany. So many iconic moments too. Gazza's astonishing goal against Scotland, Pearce's penalty in the Spain shootout, that Wembley atmosphere came through the TV into the living room. Great time to be old enough to get swept up in it all.

It was Euro 80 in Italy for me. Only eight teams in it. England had lost one, drawn one and were relying on other results in the last game, but then were eliminated. Keegan was the top player in Europe then but was unfit.
