My first memory of an international tournament was Euro 2004, watching England go out on penalties and my older brother running around the house in his fake Cristiano Ronaldo shirt from the family holiday to Portugal the year prior! Dad wasn't best pleased…

England suffered their worst humiliation since they were knocked out of the 1950 World Cup by USA in Brazil as Iceland shocked them in the last 16 of Euro 2016.

Despite taking the lead through Wayne Rooney's fourth-minute penalty, the Three Lions lost 2-1 to a nation ranked 34th in the world - and with a population of just 330,000.

Manager Roy Hodgson resigned after the disappointing tournament.

First Euros memory was England v Germany in 1996. My mum used her lipstick to draw a St George's Cross on my face. Then Southgate missed the penalty and I cried, but mainly because the lipstick wouldn't come off, not even with makeup remover. She told me to squeeze my eyes and mouth and used a tiny dab of bleach on a cloth. Happy days!

My earliest memory of the Euros was watching on a tiny black and white portable telly as Ray Wilkins scored a great solo goal to put us ahead against Belgium in 1980. We ended up drawing 1–1 and never made it out of the group stage of a tournament that was blighted by hooliganism.

England were beaten on penalties by hosts Portugal at Euro 2004 in Lisbon as the hosts progressed to the semi-finals.

Michael Owen put England ahead after a Costinha error, but Helder Postiga made it 1-1 before Sol Campbell had a 90th- minute goal controversially ruled out.

Rui Costa's extra-time scorcher put the hosts ahead, but Frank Lampard turned sharply and scored to force penalties.

However, David Beckham and Darius Vassell missed from the spot to allow keeper Ricardo, who took his gloves off for the penalties, to fire home the winning penalty.

England's bid to end their 55-year wait for a major trophy ended in the familiar agony of defeat in a penalty shootout as Italy claimed the Euro 2020 crown at Wembley.

The Three Lions looked on course for their most joyous day since 30 July 1966 when Luke Shaw gave them the perfect start after two minutes.

However, Leonardo Bonucci equalised in the 67th minute to force extra-time and penalties.

Italy keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma helped his side to glory in the penalty shoot-out with England losing 3-2.

First international memories as a kid growing up in the 90s was Euro 96. What a tournament to remember, let alone first international memories! I would've loved to be old enough to remember Italia 90 (I was only 4), but it was Euro 96 for me. I still remember crying after watching England go out on penalties. The Scotland, Spain and of course the Germany game will always be remembered. Dare I say it, the good old days!

Scotland came closest to the knockout stages at Euro 1996, it look like the Scots would be heading to a first quarter-final, with England 4-0 up against the Netherlands in the final group game.

But Patrick Kluivert's goal in the 78th minute proved vital as the Dutch snuck through on goals scored.

Ally McCoist's goal beat Switzerland 1-0, but sadly Scotland's second victory at a Euros felt like a defeat.

  11. Fans who targeted Vini Jr with racist chants jailedpublished at 13:55 British Summer Time 10 June

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Three Valencia fans have been sentenced to eight months in prison in the first conviction for racism at a football match in Spain as a direct result of a complaint filed by La Liga.

The racist chants were aimed at Real Madrid’s Brazilian star Vinicius Jr on 21 May 2023.

The three defendants were found guilty of a ‘crime against moral integrity of Art. 173.1 of Spain’s Penal Code with aggravating circumstance of discrimination based on racist motives (Art. 22.4 P.C.)’.

An initial 12 month sentence was reduced by a third following an agreement reached as the preliminary investigation stage.

The guilty parties have also been banned from entering any football stadium in which LALIGA and/or RFEF (Royal Spanish Football Federation) matches are played for a period of three years, subsequently reduced to two.

Vinicius Jr joined La Liga, Real Madrid and the Spanish football federation (RFEF) in bringing the case to court.

“This ruling is great news for the fight against racism in Spain, as it goes some way to redressing the disgraceful wrong suffered by Vinicius Jr. and sends a clear message to those individuals who go to a football stadium to hurl abuse. LALIGA will identify them, report them, and there will be criminal consequences,” said La Liga President Javier Tebas.

“I understand that there may be some frustration at the length of time it takes for these sentences to be handed down, but this shows that Spain is a country that guarantees judicial integrity. We at LALIGA can only respect the pace of justice, but once again we demand that Spanish legislation evolve to give LALIGA sanctioning powers that can speed up the fight against racism,” he added.

  12. Criticism after football club drops women's teampublished at 13:50 British Summer Time 10 June

A football club has come under fire after it dropped its entire women's section.

Thornaby FC's committee announced on Sunday it had voted to continue without its female teams, leaving 100 players without a club. It said its future was in doubt after a "difficult year" and progressing without the women was the only way to continue.

First team manager Abbey Lyle said players had been "floored" by the decision, while England player Beth Mead said she was "disgusted".

Board member Philip Genery, who voted against the decision along with chairman Garry Morris, told the BBC six other board members had now stepped down and a new "more diverse" board would be established, including representatives from the women's team.

Everton are not interested in a move for Chelsea striker Armando Broja, contrary to reports.

There were suggestions that the Toffees had been in discussions with the Blues about a £30m move for the 22-year-old Albania, but the Merseysiders simply don't have that money to spend because of financial restrictions and the uncertainty over their takeover.

A number of parties have expressed interest in buying the club from majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri and it remains to be seen who can agree a period of exclusivity after the attempted takeover by 777 Partners fell through.

Sean Dyche's side have not offered a deal to Leicester midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, who is out contract this summer, while speculation about a move for Frenchman Tanguy Ndombele is also out of the question.

Meanwhile, the European Championship begins this week but Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite will not be there after surprisingly missing out on a place in the England squad.

The 21-year-old centre-back is their prized asset and has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United but have received no bids so far.

Everton are making plans for him to remain with the club next season and have not set an asking price, while it would need a 'mega' offer to even consider selling the player.

A consortium of international investors, which involves a member of the Saudi royal family, have made a £400m offer to buy Premier League club Everton.

Farhad Moshiri agreed to sell his 94% stake to 777 Partners in September but the investment firm could not complete the deal, opening the way for others to make a takeover bid.

Local businessmen Andy Bell and George Downing, as well as MSP Sports Capital - who have lent the Toffees around £158m - are also in the running for a period of exclusivity after lodging bids.

London-based businessman and lawyer Vatche Manoukian is leading a bid alongside an unnamed Saudi royal and families with a high-net worth from the United States.

Manoukian and his consortium have proposed an all-equity offer which would not take on additional debt and aim to create a sustainable, long-term strategy.

They see Everton as a “sleeping giant” of English football with potential to secure its place “at the top of world football again” through the new stadium being built on Bramley-Moore Dock.

Armenian Manoukian, 45, is a partner at tech investment firm IMS Digital Ventures and are backed by Australia’s Myer family, who have a net worth of £1.19bn.

Roma owner Dan Friedkin, Michael Dell of Dell Technologies and Kenneth King of investment firm A-Cap are understood to be interested too.

How much are Man Utd gonna undermine Ten Hag? How can they possibly expect him to do well if they have stories about sacking him and stories about talking to other managers when they haven’t publicly said they are backing him. He’ll be gone before Xmas next season thus wasting another year for the club.

  16. Gareth Southgate: Who could replace Ten Hag?published at 13:25 British Summer Time 10 June

England boss Gareth Southgate has also been heavily linked and attended Sir Dave Brailsford's 60th birthday celebrations earlier this year.

However, United's first pre-season friendly is the day after the Euro 2024 final and Southgate has a contract with the Football Association until the end of the year.

It seems unlikely, but funny things do happen in football....

  17. Graham Potter: Who could replace Ten Hag?published at 13:19 British Summer Time 10 June

    Graham PotterImage source, Getty Images

Chelsea sacked Graham Potter after less than seven months in charger after 11 defeat in 31 games.

He won 12 of his 31 games in charge in all competitions and managed 1.27 points per game in the Premier League - the joint-lowest of any manager to take charge of 20 or more games for Chelsea in the Premier League, alongside Glen Hoddle.

The 49-year-old, who also managed at Ostersunds FK and Swansea City, led Brighton to a ninth-place finish in 2021-22 and the following season had them in the top four after the opening six Premier League games, before joining Chelsea.

Having not coached since his miserable time at Stamford Bridge, is another big club the right move?

In December 2016, Thomas Frank joined Brentford as assistant head coach and two years later he was promoted to head coach following the departure of Dean Smith.

The 50-year-old then helped the Bees to Premier League promotion at the end of the 2019-20 Championship season.

What followed was a 13th, ninth and 16th finish in the top flight on smaller budget than the vast majority of the league.

But the size of Manchester United brings different challenges that Frank has never faced before.

  19. Mauricio Pochettino: Who could replace Ten Hag?published at 13:06 British Summer Time 10 June

Former Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino was previously linked with the Manchester United job before United appointed Erik ten Hag back in 2022.

Despite being sacked by the Blues in May, Pochettino finished above United in the league - finishing the season with six wins in a row to claim sixth.

With a young squad at Chelsea, the Argentinian again proved his ability to develop up-and-coming players - shown in his stint at Tottenham where they reached the 2019 Champions League final.

Added to a Ligue 1 tile he won in 2021–22 when in charge of Paris St-Germain, could he be the man to take Man United to the next level?
