We will finish our comparisons with a 17-year-old Kylian Mbappe, who had already become Monaco's youngest-ever first-team player.

At the age of 17 he also became their youngest ever goalscorer - breaking both records set by Thierry Henry.

In March 2016 he signed his first professional contract. Monaco's vice president at the time, Vadim Vasilyev, said he knew Mbappe was 'a phenomenon' from early on.

It was at 18 when Mbappe made his senior debut for France and the following year he shone at the World Cup in Russia. He became the second teenager, after Pele, to score in a World Cup final.

Before Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo came along, Diego Maradona was Pele's closest rival for the title of football's GOAT and he too emerged as a teenage star.

Maradona made his professional debut for Argentinos Juniors in October 1976 - 10 days before his 16th birthday - and he soon earned his full international debut for Argentina in February 1977.

Maradona continued to impress in the Argentine Primera Division and he was 17 when Argentina hosted the 1978 World Cup. Coach Cesar Luis Menotti chose not to name Maradona in his squad but Argentina won regardless - and Maradona led them to World Cup victory again at Mexico 1986.

Before the time he turned 18, Maradona had scored 43 league goals for Argentinos Juniors, and he was 20 when he left for Boca Juniors in 1981, before making world-record moves to Barcelona in 1982 and Napoli in 1984.

At the age of 17 Erling Haaland scored his first league goal for Molde.

Haaland was already attracting attention at a young age. In July 2018 he scored four goals inside the opening 21 minutes of their game against Brann. After the game Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Molde's manager at the time likened his style of play to that of Romelu Lukaku. He added that the club had rejected bids for Haaland from multiple other clubs.

The striker scored his first goal in a Uefa competition - Molde’s Europa League qualifier - five days after his 18th birthday. The following month he made the switch to Red Bull Salzburg.

Before the age of 18 he had already scored 22 goals in Norway's youth sides. He has since gone on to become the senior team's all-time leading goalscorer with 40.
