Why is everyone obsessed with Yamal's goalscoring and assists stats, they are important but just enjoy his skills - they are worth watching alone.

  2. Poll: Is Yamal the best player in the world right now?published at 10:26 British Summer Time 1 May

    Ben Ramsdale
    BBC Sport journalist

Lots of you already having your say today via text but if you want to double down, like Emil in Stroud this morning, we have a poll running at the top of this live page.

A simple yes or no for this one.

However, for those in the no camp - if Yamal isn't the best player in the world right now, then who is?

    You know what to do!

Age doesn't make someone the best player in the world. It's a good achievement but there are 5/6 players ahead of him at least.

    Ryan, Sheffield

Is Yamal world's best? No. Most would agree La Liga is a weaker league than the PL. So far this season Salah has scored 31 goals in PL/CL to Yamal's 11 in La Liga/CL and Salah has provided 22 assists to Yamal's 18. Yamal lacks Salah's output despite playing in a weaker league.

  4. Like watching Messi in his heyday - Carragherpublished at 10:17 British Summer Time 1 May

Speaking to US broadcaster CBS Sports, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said: “That was like watching Messi in his heyday. When he got the ball, the whole game stopped as people wait to see what he's going to do.

“We always felt Mbappe and Haaland would be the next two [best players in the world after Messi and Ronaldo]. I don’t think Haaland will ever be that, he’s just an out-and-out goalscorer.

“The way Yamal played tonight, I won’t say he’s better than Mbappe now, but there is more to him. He will get involved in the game more and pull out wide.”

Lamine Yamal speaking to TNT Sports: "I try to forge my own path. I try to play the way I know how and not think about anything.

"I think that’s the trick, that’s the secret, to try to do my best and not compare myself with anyone.

"I’m following my path, giving my all, and it’s been working out for me so far, but I still haven’t achieved anything.

"I’ll try to play the same or better in the second leg and hopefully we’ll win."

While I do think Yamal is unbelievable, having 100 first-team appearances at the highest level by 17 is just a complete recipe for disaster. Whilst I understand on his day, he is the go-to player for Hansi Flick and therefore needs to play if Barca want to win - it just seems unwise to play him so much. For reference, he played 3000 minutes last season, and over 3800 minutes this season. Messi was 21 when he played around 3800 minutes in a season, and Ronaldo was 20. Obviously I don't know as much as Flick, but just a slight cause for concern.

    Myuran

I think a lot of people are ignoring the dangers of playing so many elite games so young. The damage that can do to a developing body, see players like Pedri, Gavi, Wharton etc. One injury so early could result in some of these guys losing that explosive edge that makes them so exciting.

Fascinating stat that one Ben. Ronaldo, still playing at 40. Only played 19 games by time he was 17. 100 games at the same age for Yamal is insane, gives a high risk of burnout. We need FIFA to put measures in place to protect talent like this, not wear it out before he gets to 22.

How about Wayne Rooney at the same age? He was just 16 years old when he scored his first Premier League goal, a superb match-winner against an Arsenal side who were then the defending champions.

By the time he had turned 18, Rooney had registered 55 appearances, 12 goals, 3 assists. He had also scored twice in eight internationals for England.

A few years before that, Michael Owen emerged as a teenage star across Stanley Park. He had turned 17 before scoring on his Premier League debut for Liverpool in May 1997.

The following season he scored 23 goals from 44 appearances, and when he turned 18 he had racked up 24 appearances, 9 goals, 5 assists.

Yamal is undoubtedly excellent, he's box-office, but he's far from complete. He is creative, can get past anyone, shoot and play through-balls but his pass-completion in the final third yesterday wasn't great. He needs to understand the game better and team dynamics.

    Paul

I've seen far too many 17 year old wonder-kids deemed the next big thing, who then faded, to label Yamal the best in the world already. If he keeps developing on this trajectory he surely will be in a few years time though.

A few of you making the Ansu Fati comparison this morning.

I think it's a fair one but also feel like you kind of know deep down when a player is going to potentially fade.

Simply can't see that happening with Yamal.

Good time for us to look at comparisons with what some other familiar faces had achieved at 17, though.

Hello BBC Sport, comment on Yamal - a very classy player but I would heed caution on overhyping him - we all saw the way Ansu Fati has faded away. But for sure Jamal Musiala and Lamine Yamal are going to be the next Ronaldo and Messi to dominate Ballon d'Ors for years to come.

    Jimi, Uxbridge

Same thing was said about Ansu Fati a few years ago. We've seen many a player shine bright young and burn out too quick. Yamal is a big game player, but nowhere near consistent enough to be considered the best in the world yet.

I think Yamal might be the third best winger in the world at the moment after Salah & Raphinha. If Barca win the Champions League Raphinha is surely a shoe-in for the Ballon d’Or. Sorry Arsenal fans I think Yamal might be better than Saka

Lamine Yamal plays with a level of confidence I don't think we've ever seen of a player that age and there were question marks as well before the Copa del Rey against Real Madrid whether or not he was getting too cocky, too big for his boots and he said "well until they defeat us I can speak what I like."

He just has no fear. He has such skill with the ball. He has such confidence in what he is doing.

Right, this tug-of-war between Emil in Stroud and well, everyone else, could go on all day so let's try and stray away from that a little now.

You've certainly saved me a job in sparking a debate though, cheers Emil.

What Emil is conveniently ignoring is that he has 14 assists in the league as well, with 15 goals and 24 assists in all competitions. Incredible numbers for a player at their peak, let alone a 17 year old.

    Callum, Manchester

Emil from Stroud has conveniently left out the 14 assists this season in the league as well. I think you can say this of Yamal - as a player, he currently has the highest ceiling of anyone in the top five leagues and has games like that where he seems unplayable. However, it seems premature to call him the best in the world yet - the likes of Raphinha, Salah, Dembele in attack would all have a better claim to that AT the moment.

    Zac, Cambridge

Emil those are interesting stats, not taking into account assists? Because Yamal is a 17 year old winger with 12 assists in La Liga/3 in CL, Hojlund's (supposed to be) a 22 year old centre forward, with no assists in the Prem/2 in EUR. What people are excited about is Yamal seems like a complete footballer...at 17.

Lamine Yamal has a trophy cabinet many players could only dream of having in their career - at 17-years-old.

So far for club and country, his honours list is as followed:

    • Euro 2024 title
    • La Liga champion x1
    • Copa del Rey x1
    • Spanish Super Cup x1

And that list could grow even further come the end of this month.
