There is an element of luck about the finish but it was a wonderful through pass.

The goalkeeper is all over the place and he does well Guessand. It is just a tap in at the back post.

It is a nice early goal to start.

Strange goal but Villa won't care.

Jadon Sancho lifts in a cross which Go Ahead defender Joris Kramer almost kicks out of his keeper's hands.

FYI I remember Go Ahead Eagles coming to Portman Road and playing a preseason game against Ipswich Town in the early 70s. Can’t remember the score though.

Go Ahead almost, um, go ahead from the free-kick.

Villa play a high line as they defend the set-piece but Gerrit Nauber is somehow onside and unmarked as he hooks a shot over from six yards.

Aston Villa will wear their third kit for the first time tonight.

"The design itself pays homage to the rich history and unique architecture of Villa Park, drawing direct inspiration from the signature stained glass windows that have adorned the stadium since it first opened in 1897," says the blurb.

It's white - with blue bits around the shoulders.

Villa didn't start the league particularly well but they have found a bit of form now.

First Palace home game in UEFA could they win? First game for Dyche aswell feel like he will do good for them. Aston Villa should win as their performance has been so-so but has been getting better.

Go Ahead Eagles v Aston Villa (17:45 BST)

Aston Villa's Ian Maatsen says he can "learn a lot" from fellow left-back Lucas Digne.

Digne has been Unai Emery's preferred option on the left side of defence this season, with Maatsen starting just once in the Premier League.

However, with Digne out with an ankle problem, the 23-year-old starts for the third consecutive European match.

"There is strong competition," Maatsen said.

"Lucas is a fantastic player with a lot of qualities and I'm the young player coming into the Premier League so I can learn a lot from him and we have a good relationship.

"He keeps me sharp and keeps me focused so I'm not worried about my place in the team because the coach and my teammates know my qualities.

"Whenever they need me, I'm ready.

"I trust the coaches here. Whenever my minutes are coming I'm ready to perform and show my qualities."

BBC Radio WM's Steve Hermon has been speaking to Aston Villa fans in Deventer, Netherlands, before Thursday's Europa League game against Go Ahead Eagles.

    Hear from some of them:

Villa fan Lee, who has not missed any of 15 European away trips since Villa got back into Europe in 2023: "It's the best hobby in the world. Honestly, it's fantastic. It costs a lot of money obviously but you wouldn't change seeing Villa back in Europe for the world.

"Didn't even know it [Deventer] existed until the draw came out, but yeah that's the beauty of football."

Another fan said: "It never gets old. I go home and away in the Premier League every season, so it's just about following the boys and being behind them.

"It's also the people that you meet as well. It's not just about the football. You form a little group because you see these people home and away."

A further fan, Sam, added: "Different places, being with your friends and you get the bonus of being with the Villa! 3-0 - all the way"

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery: "We've used this competition to get confidence, and tomorrow the objective is not to get confidence but to compete.

"Because of how we started, these three points are very important in case we want to be in the top eight.

"We have a lot of respect for the teams in Europe because they are usually very motivated when they are playing at home.

"They are going to be playing at home with their supporters and will try to beat us."

  19. Why are they called Go Ahead Eagles?published at 17:17 BST 23 October

Go Ahead Eagles v Aston Villa (17:45 BST)

If you're wondering why the team are called Go Ahead Eagles, the history bit of their club website clears it up.

    Actually no it doesn't.

You see they were actually called Be Quick initially but the Dutch FA made them change name in 1905 because there was another team called Be Quick Groningen.

So they chose Go Ahead. They don't say why. In 1971 they added Eagles - which was suggested by their Welsh manager Barry Hughes.

The other Be Quick are still milling around in the Dutch lower leagues.
