Falkirk extended their lead at the top of the Scottish Championship with a comfortable win at Airdrieonians.

John McGlynn's side went in front inside nine minutes when Brad Spencer's corner was turned into his own net by home defender Aidan Wilson.

The Falkirk captain then found the net himself, in somewhat fortuitous circumstances as an attempted cross floated over Airdrieonians goalkeeper Kieran Wright into the far corner.

Substitute striker Barney Stewart made it three on 77 minutes after beating Wright to a cross from the right-hand side.

Falkirk are three points ahead of Ayr United, who came from two goals down to beat Queen's Park on Tuesday, and four points clear of Livingston in third.

Airdrieonians player-manager Rhys McCabe: "The first goal was massive, it looked like a scuffle, but I've not seen it back. We never responded well and the next two goals we conceded were too easy.

"It's alright having a style of football, but, it needs to come with an end product. That wee moment of quality just didn't come."

Falkirk manager John McGlynn: "Airdrieonians have been spirited, they've not thrown the towel in, so everyone has something to fight for.

"We showed the right character tonight, and I'm really pleased with the attitude of my players in poor conditions."
