The first fixture for Liverpool since Diogo Jota's passing was an emotional occasion, with fans in full voice throughout to remember the Liverpool forward and his brother, who died in a car crash on 3 July.

Liverpool and Scotland defender Andrew Robertson had to walk away from the rest of his team-mates when they were applauding the fans at the end there.

Robertson was a close friend of Jota's and shared a deeply emotional message when he passed.

The way in which You’ll Never Walk Alone was bellowed this afternoon conveyed an immense depth of feeling for a footballer adored by followers of his club, while for those on the pitch, playing without him for the first time will have been just one of many important stages of their grief.

There have scarcely been football matches less important than this, and yet, very few which have been imbued with as much as meaning, emotion, and sheer love by those who made sure they were there to play their part.

When Liverpool supporters purchased their tickets for a summer friendly away at Preston, they will have done so hoping for a sunny day out and a chance to get the first look at some exciting new signings.

They would not have expected what today’s match tragically ended up becoming – a profoundly melancholy memorial service for a footballer they adored, with what felt like a pretty redundant football match attached afterwards.

Those who packed out the Bill Shankly Kop belted out Jota’s name before kick-off and followed that up with regular airing throughout the match, including a rendition beginning as the clock hit 20 – in honour of the Portuguese forward’s now retired shirt number.

After the full-time whistle, Liverpool fans have launched into a full-throated rendition of Diogo Jota's song.

The Liverpool players are lining up in front of them and applauding.

As Liverpool's squad and coaches finally make their way back to the dressing room, the away end serenades them with a rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone.

That was a very emotional few minutes for all involved.

Liverpool have another!

This time it's Cody Gakpo. Liverpool overturn possession on the right, play the ball into the middle of the Preston box and Gakpo fires home from close range.

He also does Diogo Jota's shark celebration.

Preston pull one back and it's a great header from Liam Lindsay, towering above his markers in the box to power a corner home.

A Diogo Jota tribute banner is now being walked along the front of the Bill Shankly Kop.

It bears the striker's name and face, with the photo taken from a goal celebration.

The entire away end is stood up applauding and singing his name.

Liverpool have been comfortably on top in the second half and are creating some good chances in the Preston third.

A few players have efforts blocked in quick succession as the Reds search for a third.

This was a nice touch from Darwin Nunez to celebrate this goal. He recreated Diogo Jota's 'shark celebration' that we saw him do in the Merseyside derby and in a game at Burnley from a quick search on our photo bank!

Play has been paused again for another cooling break in the 68th minute.

Preston make seven substitutions.

A good effort from Cody Gakpo, who finds space on the edge of the space and sends a low drive towards the near post, but Daniel Iversen is equal to it.

Preston make two changes.

Lewis Gibson and Jordan Storey and replaced by Odeluga Offiah and Liam Lindsay.

Darwin Nunez performed a pair of Diogo Jota-inspired celebrations after scoring. The Uruguayan performed a shark gesture, which Jota memorably delivered after scoring a cracking goal against Everton at Goodison Park, before sitting down and mimicking playing video games.

The celebrations are met with huge applause from the Liverpool supporters, who follow it up with a rendition of Jota's song.

Liverpool get their second!

It's poor from Preston at the back as Darwin Nunez snatches the ball from the feet of a defender who dawdles for too long when looking to play the ball out.

Nunez rounds Daniel Iversen and taps it into the back of the net.

Preston have commissioned a special commemorative programme for the match.

Diogo Jota, with the Premier League trophy Liverpool won last season, is on the front cover.

The back pays tribute to Jota and his brother Andre Silva.
