Outside the ground, Preston shirt sponsor Spud Bros have altered the food truck they operate in order to pay tribute to Diogo Jota.

The Portuguese forward's signature, and now retired, number 20 shirt adorns the truck on Premier League numbering.

Jota played at Deepdale three times in his career, scoring once in a 2023 friendly Liverpool played against German club SV Darmstadt.

  4. 'Be yourself, like Diogo was always himself' - Slot to his playerspublished at 15:55 British Summer Time 13 July

Liverpool boss Arne Slot spoke to Liverpool TV before this game, in his first interview since Diogo Jota's passing.

He has told his players to "be yourself" and "don't think you have to be different than your emotions tell you".

"If we want to laugh, we laugh; if we want to cry, we're going to cry," said Slot.

"If they want to train they can train, if they don't want to train they can not train.

"We will always carry him with us in our hearts, in our thoughts, wherever we go."

It's very difficult to find the right words because we constantly debate what is appropriate. What is appropriate in our actions? What is appropriate [for] what we have to say? Can we train again? Can we laugh again? Can we be angry if there's a wrong decision?

"And I've said to them, maybe the best thing for us to do is handle this situation like Jota was. And what I meant with that is that Jota was always himself, it didn't matter if he was talking to me, to his team-mates, to the staff, he was always himself. So let us try to be ourselves as well."

In the five years he played for the club, Diogo Jota's tenacity, playful personality and knack for scoring important goals made him one of the team's most popular players in a trophy-laden spell.

Plenty of those I spoke to outside said they are struggling to believe or accept his loss.

Aside from Conor Bradley's goal, there haven't been many chances of note in the first half so far.

It's been played at a relatively slow pace. It's a hot day at Deepdale and neither side have had that much time to prepare.
