France were lucky that they were facing that Belgium team.

France dominating, but they were not convincing. There is space for improvement and in the end it came down to a Jan Vertonghen own goal.

  4. 'Room for improvement'published at 10:14 2 July

    France 1-0 Belgium

    Izzy Christiansen
Former England midfielder on BBC Radio Football Daily

It is tricky to tell how far France can go because the tournament has thrown up a lot of surprises. It has been the tournament of lower ranked nations being exceptionally well coached. We have seen it with Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia and Slovakia.

It is very difficult to judge where they are at and all you can do is judge them on how they played against Belgium. Yes, they were better but there is room for improvement and they will always be a threat as long as they are in the tournament.

  5. France are 'struggling'published at 10:10 2 July

    France 1-0 Belgium

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

I saw France in the group stage against Poland, struggling to convert chances and sometimes struggling to create them, and that was very much the case yesterday. For me, the two most dynamic teams that I have seen are Germany and Spain, who meet each other in the quarter-finals in Stuttgart on Friday.

  6. 'Some frustration from French fans'published at 10:07 2 July

    France 1-0 Belgium

On Kylian Mbappe's mask: It is very uncomfortable apparently and it's an issue.

There are a lot of critics coming out in France and everyone is agreeing that Kylian Mbappe isn't an asset.

He's not coming back and everything that would make Mbappe, Mbappe seems to have disappeared. There is some frustration from French fans.

  8. 'Mbappe didn't look great'published at 09:58 2 July

    FT: France 1-0 Belgium

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

They squeaked through and they don't look particularly good. Mbappe didn't look great, he looked uncomfortable in his mask. I was speaking to a French football journalist earlier on and she said she feels as if France and England are in a similar space. Yes, they are through to the quarter-finals but not playing well.

  9. France 'got the job done'published at 09:53 2 July

    France 1-0 Belgium

    Izzy Christiansen
Former England midfielder on BBC Radio Football Daily

France have got the job done and they have put their hat into the quarter-finals but it wasn't a particularly convincing performance, in terms of how they attacked. It wasn't fluid at times and they were slow and laboured.

Part of that is how Belgium were set up to frustrate and stifle them but France were patient and I didn't see any poor body language from their players. They had players on their bench that can make an impact and that is exactly what they did.

The substitute Randal Kolo Muani has come on and got the goal. He got France out of their defensive third in the closing stages when Belgium were peppering them and he won the free-kick before the referee blew the final whistle. It's a massive tick and it's up to [Didier] Deschamps now to tweak that game plan and keep them moving through the tournament.

Portugal have the same problem as England had a few years ago when Beckham was coming to the end of his England career. He like Ronaldo demanded to take every free kick and penalty which didn't work either. If Fernando had taken the penalty in extra time they wouldn't have needed a shootout. Lucky Portugal.

Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa said: "We all know that Cristiano is the hardest worker.

"I understand how frustrated he is because he devotes all his time to this. It’s a pleasure and an honour to be on the same team as him.

"We're a family, I really think this. I focus on making the best of these chances and I wanted to help the team. This is the most important thing. This is probably the best game of my life."

  13. Ronaldo had scored his last 24 penalties in all competitionspublished at 09:33 2 July

Portugal 0-0 Slovenia (Portugal win 3-0 on pens)

With 102 minutes on the clock Cristiano Ronaldo had the chance to avoid a penalty shootout and help guide his nation to another major semi-final.

Ronaldo had every right to be confident as he had scored his last 24 penalties in all competitions.

However, at major international tournaments his record isn't as solid as he's failed to convert three of the nine penalties he's taken.

Portugal's captain has mustered 20 shots at Euro 2024 - the most of any player - and is yet to score.

Portugal should drop Ronaldo, I've never saw a more selfish performance from one player. Also I'm convinced they would play far better football without him in the team.

"Even the strongest people have their [bad] days. I was at rock bottom when the team needed me the most," said Cristiano Ronaldo afterwards, before tearing up again.

"Sadness at the start is joy at the end. That's what football is. Moments, inexplicable moments. I feel sad and happy at the same time.

"But the important thing is to enjoy it. The team did an extraordinary job. We fought right to the end and I think we deserved it because we had more authority."

  16. Redemption for tearful Ronaldo at 'last Euros'published at 09:18 2 July

Portugal 0-0 Slovenia (Portugal win 3-0 on pens)

    Emma Sanders
    BBC Sport at Frankfurt Arena

As Jan Oblak's hand tipped Cristiano Ronaldo's extra-time penalty on to the post, the Portuguese legend's dreams shattered in a moment.

    He had "hit rock bottom".

The 39-year-old, who afterwards told Portuguese media this was his last Euros, bowed his head and burst into tears while team-mates raced to console their captain, with Slovenia threatening one of the Euros' biggest ever shocks.

A legendary European Championship career seemed set to end in the cruellest of ways.

Ronaldo's penalty was saved in extra time with the last-16 tie goalless, but just 15 minutes later he stepped up to the same spot to fire in the first of his country's shootout kicks.

Goalkeeper Diogo Costa then made Euros history with three penalty shootout saves as Portugal survived a humiliating exit, overcoming Slovenia to set-up a quarter-final tie with France.

More tears fell from Ronaldo - this time of pure joy and relief.

Warren, St Albans: @Jon (08:52) if Ronaldo had actually let Fernandes take any of the direct free kicks, then it may not have gone to a penalty shootout in the first place; so yeah, you could indeed say that it was because of Ronaldo that Costa had his time to shine in the shootout. Portugal may actually start to play more as a collective once Ronaldo hangs up his boots; even the greatest players have to know when to call it time.

You won't see Cristiano Ronaldo - even after his love and passion for Juventus, Real Madrid and Manchester United - with that level of emotion for any club.

We saw it in the final in 2016, that the country means a lot to him. He has a sense of responsibility to the people of Portugal and that is what justifies that reaction.

The kind of mental strength and composure to take the first penalty to take advantage in the shootout. He scored and then apologised to the fans, it shows the commitment he has to the country.

He really wants to win this tournament and go through to the final.

  19. Portugal prevail after 'extraordinary night'published at 09:07 2 July

Portugal 0-0 Slovenia (Portugal win 3-0 on pens)

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on the Football Daily podcast

Portugal are through to the quarter-finals and they were quality penalty kicks, you've got to give them that, but what an extraordinary night.

Each team had fantastic chances near the end, you've got to feel sorry for the Slovenians - the battling qualities they had tonight, good quality defending as well, the work-rate of the two strikers was amazing.

Maybe there wasn't that bit of quality to create things from midfield but against the world-class players that Portugal have got, to keep them at bay for 120 minutes was fantastic.

  20. 'Portugal need space to play'published at 09:04 2 July

Portugal 0-0 Slovenia (Portugal win 3-0 on pens)

    Mariana Fernandes
Portuguese journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

Slovenia did a great job defending. It shows that they paid attention to Portugal's last game in the defeat to Georgia.

Portugal have a lot of difficulty playing against teams that allow little space.

Portugal does a great job against bigger teams, rather than smaller teams - Portugal need space to play and it activates the creativity. It will be a completely different game [against France].
