Slovenia draw with Portugal and get the 'respect of Europe'. Slovenia draw with England and we're awful. We're so arrogant - tournament football is far from easy.

    Steve

More respect should to Slovenia and Slovakia who have frustrated big teams this tournament. The performance of Slovenia last night and Slovakia’s victory against Belgium puts in perspective their performances against England. Perhaps the pundits should review the panning they gave England and chalk it up to two very good and well organised teams

    Anon

All due respect to the English pundits, but there seems to be a lot of double standard about so many of them, it is off-putting. Slovenia did a great job holding Portugal until the very end, according to these blokes. Yet the English team gets a beating from same blokes. It's pathetic. Football is different now compared when many of them used to play. Perhaps they need to be reminded of that every so often.

Jan Oblak made a lot of great saves in the game. He did a great job.

He knew every time where Cristiano Ronaldo was going to be and Portugal tried a lot of crosses, but Oblak gave no chances to Ronaldo – a great example of a player keeping his team in the tournament.

While Diogo Costa will win all of the plaudits, Slovenia's Jan Oblak also produced an impressive display between the sticks.

The 31-year-old made one of the saves of the tournament as his outstretched left hand kept out Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty in extra time.

Can we stop with the praise for Diogo Costa already? He wouldn't even BE in a position to save the day if it wasn't for Ronaldo, so technically Ronaldo won this game for Portugal. A little more respect for the greatest player of all time, please.

    Jon, Liverpool

Well, that's one way of looking at it Jon.

  5. 'Costa the conqueror'published at 08:50 2 July

Portugal 0-0 Slovenia (Portugal win 3-0 on pens)

    Mariana Fernandes
Portuguese journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was a great penalty shootout. Diogo Costa made the saves of his life.

We are thinking Cristiano Ronaldo is going to be the hero and then Costa goes and saves three penalties and he is the man of the match and the man of the night - Costa conquered that place.

Even the last save against Benjamin Sesko in extra time, Portugal would have been eliminated in that moment.

Euro ‘96 and the Semi-Final penalty shootout. I was only eight and I hoped it would be the first and last time football made me cry… here’s to hoping GS and the boys can finally come good and bring football home. We still believe.

As ever, Cristiano Ronaldo stole the limelight in a memorable match, but his wait for a first goal here in Germany continues.

It was not through a lack of trying as he was energetic and lively, particularly in the first half, and was not afraid to show his emotions.

Throwing his arms towards the sky, punching the air in frustration and roaring his dismay at missed chances became a common trend - but when his moment came to shine, he did not seize it.

The narrative threatened to swing the other way - but like Ronaldo, Slovenia talisman Benjamin Sesko missed his big opportunity with four minutes left on the clock.

It was a match of 'what ifs' but ultimately Portugal, who created the better chances and had controlled large periods, deserved their victory and credit must go to Costa for his sensational individual performance in the shootout.

When Bernardo Silva netted the final spot-kick, he raced over to his goalkeeper to celebrate, with Ronaldo among those sprinting behind, no doubt unleashing huge feelings of relief and elation.

  10. Why was Ronaldo crying?published at 08:24 2 July

Portugal 0-0 Slovenia (Portugal win 3-0 on pens)

Cristano Ronaldo is chasing another record with Portugal - becoming the first player to score in six European Championship finals.

He went close with a couple of free-kicks against Slovenia then late in normal time had a great chance, only to fire too close to Slovenia goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

The 39-year-old forward then had his best chance yet after Vanja Drkusic tripped substitute Diogo Jota for a penalty in extra time.

This was Ronaldo's moment to finally beat Oblak and put Portugal on the brink of the last eight. Yet Oblak pulled off a fine save to turn Ronaldo's effort wide, via the post.

That save came right before the interval in extra time, and as coach Roberto Martinez spoke to his players on the pitch, it dawned on Ronaldo that he could have spurned the chance to send his nation through. The tears began to flow and he was comforted by team-mates as they prepared for the game to resume.

After the game, [coach] Roberto Martinez grabbed [Cristiano] Ronaldo and said 'be calm, relax'. He was in tears again.

It's not just selfishness. I'd be the first to say if it's that indulgence you get from Ronaldo sometimes but it's not that. It's what it is for him and his legacy, and also for his country as well.

Could Anthony Gordon have a say in England's quarter-final? Many have been calling for the Newcastle winger to be given a start by Gareth Southgate yet he has barely featured in Germany.

Back home, though, he could be on the move this summer, according to today's transfer gossip...

No team in this competition is unbeatable. The only team that seems to be just about total in their belief is Spain.

Of the teams left standing, yeah, they look the best. But it doesn't matter, it's a [knockout] cup, teams can get knocked out.

I'm rather looking forward to Spain-Germany. [The quarter-finals are] set up so well. The nice thing about it is that it's not just the usual suspects. There is the odd surprise one in there. The Swiss taking the Italians out was really good because it says to everyone else 'it's not going to be the usual ones'.

There is an opportunity and how close Slovenia got also gives everybody an opportunity to say, yeah, we've got a chance. Nobody is the favourite, everybody's got a chance to win this.

  19. Mask issues for Mbappe?published at 07:45 2 July

    France 1-0 Belgium

    Gary Rose
    BBC Sport in Gelsenkirchen

Appearing to adjust his mask a couple of times during France's last-16 win against Belgium, it was clear Kylian Mbappe is not yet comfortable wearing it.

But he is not the only one in France's forward line looking uncomfortable as the side once again failed to deliver in front of goal.

Instead it was a Jan Vertonghen own goal in the 85th minute, when Randal Kolo Muani's strike deflected off him, that was enough to send Les Bleus into the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.

That took their tally in Germany to three goals, none of which their players have scored from open play.

The pair were involved in a bit of needle during the last 16 tie but the Frenchman ended up on the winning side.
