Honestly Delap looks all set to break Chelsea’s striker curse. The majority of our poor striker purchases have been mostly due to poor scouting - players with obvious drawbacks - Morata, Werner, Lukaku, etc. Delap is incredibly complete. Just because he only played in transition at Ipswich doesn’t mean he’s not suited for possession-based football.

  2. Liam Delap - player profilepublished at 12:59 British Summer Time 2 June

    Position: Forward

    Nationality: English

    Age: 22

Transfer status: Chelsea are on the brink of signing Liam Delap after activating his £30m release clause following Ipswich's relegation from the Premier League.

Why do Chelsea want him?: Chelsea struggled in front of the goal last season. Of the six English teams which qualified for next term's Champions League, the Blues scored the joint-fewest goals alongside Tottenham, who finished 17th in the Premier League.

Cole Palmer was the only Chelsea player to score more goals than Delap last season. Palmer's presence is also key as he used to play alongside the forward in the Manchester City academy and for England Under-21s. Delap has bags of speed and power and won acclaim last season for his direct approach - something Chelsea were so often missing.

How was his 2024-25 campaign?: Delap ended the campaign with 12 goals in 37 appearances for an Ipswich side which never looked likely to avoid relegation. He finished with an 18% goal conversion rate from shots taken, which was better than Liverpool's Luis Diaz and West Ham's Jarrod Bowen.

  3. Transfers Q&A: Why would Chelsea refuse an upgrade?published at 12:54 British Summer Time 2 June

Will: Working out the sanity of Chelsea's transfer policy is impossible, but can anyone explain why when a goalkeeper like Kelleher is available for as little as £18m (less than Sanchez cost) Chelsea refuse to upgrade an area they are clearly crying out for?

Sami Mokbel: It’s a good question. Chelsea have made it clear that a new goalkeeper isn’t viewed as a priority for them this summer which flies in the face of some of the difficulties they have faced in that position last season.

Chelsea have another big summer ahead. They want a striker, a winger and a centre-back. That won’t come cheaply. So they will have to prioritise their spending. However, if towards the end of the window a market opportunity arises to sign a goalkeeper who is a marked improvement on the options they already have, I wouldn’t be shocked if they engaged.

  4. What do Chelsea need in the summer transfer window?published at 12:50 British Summer Time 2 June

    Chelsea

With the Club World Cup on the horizon, Chelsea will hope to do some quick business and an announcement for striker Liam Delap looks imminent. Securing Champions League qualification should also help Enzo Maresca eye more high-profile targets in the summer.

    Who are they linked with?

According to the Guardian, external, Chelsea are preparing a £50m bid for Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens. They could also look to add another striker with Hugo Ekitike, Victor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko all linked with the Blues. A first-choice goalkeeper will also be priority with neither Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen inspiring much confidence. Winger Estevao Willian, midfielder Kendry Paez, goalkeeper Mike Penders and defender Mamadou Sarr are among those joining the club in the summer.

    How much can they spend?

Jadon Sancho of Chelsea celebratesImage source, Getty Images

Chelsea's ability to bolster their squad may be determined by the Premier League's response to the sale of their women's team to parent company BlueCo for £198.7m. "If this is accepted by the league, then Chelsea would have significant spending flexibility and another £200m is a possibility," says football finance expert Kieran Maguire. "If it is excluded, then things will be far more challenging and they may have to sell before buying."

    What about departures?

Jadon Sancho could be on his way back to Manchester United if talks to turn his loan into a permanent move by fitting him into the club's wage structure fail to bear fruit. Christopher Nkunku has also been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.

Manchester City are keen to sign Wolves defender Rayan Ait-Nouri.

City boss Pep Guardiola has been operating without an orthodox left-back for a number of seasons after Benjamin Mendy’s move from Monaco in 2017 did not work out as planned.

However, Guardiola is keen to address that issue this summer. Ait-Nouri is top of their list of targets and while there is no deal in place yet, sources are confident it will happen.

City would need to complete the transfer before 10 June in order for the 23-year-old to be available for the group stages of the Club World Cup.

Jay: What’s the story with Zubimendi to Arsenal? Why hasn’t it been finalised as yet?

Alex Howell: That deal seems to be progressing. My colleague Sami Mokbel reported that he is due to do his medical and that the relevant paperwork is basically done. I don’t think there is going to be too long to wait before that is announced.

As an Arsenal fan, other than a striker and it has to be a very good one, one signing that will help us push forward (fingers crossed a trophy) is Partey signing a new deal. 100% got to give him what he wants.

Sam: Which striker is Arsenal more likely to get? Gyokeres or Sesko? And which one is better for us?

Sami Mokbel: Hi Sam, that’s the question on the lips of every Arsenal fan isn’t it? There isn’t a straightforward answer, unfortunately.

Alexander Isak was always the club’s main target but I think it is safe to concede that deal cannot happen. So in terms of Gyokeres or Sesko – my information is that the club are working towards confirming the frameworks of both deals before making a final decision on which to proceed with.

Sesko has near universal backing at the Emirates but, crucially, will be the more expensive deal. Gyokeres’ chances of moving to Arsenal have increased since Andrea Berta’s appointment as sporting director. Price is key here. Sesko ticks many boxes in terms of profile, he is younger than Gyokeres and plays in a stronger league (the Bundesliga) according to recruitment data. But some of the reported figures indicate he could cost £93million.

Gyokeres is more economical, but would see the club divert from their longer-term strategy given Sesko has always been a target.

With no football on, it can be easy to spend time checking a players social media as they jet off on their holidays.

Luis Diaz is instead on international duty with Colombia but a post on his Instagram over the weekend has fuelled speculation about his future.

He ended it by saying: "It was an unforgettable season, one I'll always carry in my heart! YNWA!"

Some reports have suggested that both Al-Nassr and Barcelona are eyeing a potential move for the 28-year-old, although nothing has been formalised.

His wife also posted on her social media: "This [fanbase] doesn't just support, it feels. And what you have made my boyfriend and our entire family feel is something we carry in our souls."

That post was liked by the Liverpool winger's account.

  11. Transfers Q&A: What does the transfer process actually look like?published at 12:15 British Summer Time 2 June

Get Involved: WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

Luke, Somerset: What does the transfer process actually look like, from the moment a club approaches a player and including all the negotiation? There seems to be a lot of back and forth with, for example, Liverpool and Florian Wirtz. What makes it so complex, given that there seems to be an understanding that it will happen?

Sami Mokbel: It’s complicated for sure, Luke. Compare it to buying a house. You may have spotted your dream property that is within your budget – but you could do with shaving a bit of the price to help you make improvements when you move in. So you put in an offer lower than the seller’s asking price. The seller is loaded and isn’t in a rush to sell so is determined to get his asking price. So you, as the buyer, continue to increase your offers because you love the house so much and eventually you’ll find an agreement.

In terms of Florian Wirtz, that’s what I believe is happening. Liverpool view the player as their No 1 target and in my mind it is unlikely that they will let Wirtz slip through their fingers this summer owing to price. But they have a duty to get the best possible deal for the club.

  12. Florian Wirtz - player profilepublished at 12:08 British Summer Time 2 June

    Florian WirtzImage source, Getty Images

    Position: Attacking midfielder

    Nationality: German

    Age: 22

Transfer status: Liverpool have entered into advanced negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen after submitting a bid worth £109m, including add-ons.

Why do Liverpool want him?: Wirtz's career is still in its infancy but he seems to have been around a while. He remains the youngest player to reach 50 Bundesliga appearances at 18 years and seven months.

Tight ball control, composure receiving it on the half-turn and an eye for a goal aren't what stands him apart. He plays with a steeliness which belies his years. He's not the loudest voice in the room, but his presence is felt by team-mates and coaches alike.

The introduction of a natural number 10 could also facilitate Dominik Szoboszlai's move into a preferred deeper role.

How was his 2024-25 campaign?: Wirtz scored 10 goals and created 57 chances in 31 Bundesliga appearances. He also made 162 touches in the opposition box, which equates to over five in a game.

Liverpool have entered into advanced negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen over a deal for Florian Wirtz.

It is understood the Premier League champions have submitted a second, improved bid for the Germany midfielder.

Liverpool's latest offer for the 22-year-old is about £109m, including add-ons.

Wirtz is a key target for the Merseyside club and has made his wishes clear about wanting to join Liverpool before next season.

  16. Liverpool bring in Frimpongpublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 2 June

Liverpool have completed the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen for 35m euros (£29.5m) on a five-year deal.

Just hours after the Anfield club confirmed Trent Alexander-Arnold would be joining Real Madrid in time to play in the Club World Cup, the Premier League champions have ratified their move for Dutch international Frimpong after activating the 24-year-old's release clause.

Versatile right-footer Frimpong is widely viewed as Alexander-Arnold's replacement in Arne Slot's squad.

He played an integral role in helping Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title in 2023-24 and made 53 appearances in all competitions as they finished second in 24-25.

Frimpong will have competition at right-back from Northern Ireland defender Conor Bradley, who recently signed a new four-year contract with the club.

  17. Trent Alexander-Arnold - player profilepublished at 11:52 British Summer Time 2 June

    Trent Alexander-ArnoldImage source, Getty Images

    Position: Right-back/Midfielder

    Nationality: English

    Age: 26

Transfer status: Announced as a Real Madrid player after Liverpool accepted a 10m euros (£8.4m) fee to release their academy graduate early from his contract.

Why do Real Madrid want him?: Real Madrid are light at right-back. Dani Carvajal, 33, has been out for the majority of the season after rupturing his ACL, while deputy Lucas Vazquez, who turns 34 next month, would not be the club's first choice. At 26, Trent is clearly the succession plan.

His ability on the ball is also key. In Jurgen Klopp's final season, Alexander-Arnold would often sit deep in the 'quarter-back' role and turn patient build-up into a dangerous attack with his speed and accuracy of passing.

How was his 2024-25 campaign?: In 33 Premier League games, Trent created 15 big chances - the most of any defender. He scored three goals and made six assists, with a 69% tackle success rate. He leaves Anfield as a Premier League winner.

  18. Transfers Q&A: Why do clubs have a model of signing young players?published at 11:49 British Summer Time 2 June

Get Involved: WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

Nathan: I'm wondering why every club seems to have a model of signing young players for the future (City, Arsenal, Inter, PSG, Real Madrid) It seems like a lot of clubs now don't want to sign anyone over 26/27 years old. Is this a sensible strategy from a football point of view or just a business one? Is it also making it easier for the MLS and Saudi Pro-league to establish themselves as top tier destinations?

Nick Mashiter: It's a sensible strategy if it works!

Chelsea can point to it working - eventually - after reaching the Champions League and winning the Europa Conference League, although they have spent close to £1.7bn in the process.

Younger players may not command the higher wages of the more established stars while clubs can spread the transfer payments over long contracts.

They would be able to keep flipping players and then hope to sell on those who are unwanted profit, that will be a strategy for many. Football is a business, ultimately.

Even a club like Norwich in the Championship is reluctant to sign players over 24 so it is not just the elite level which is pursuing that strategy.

It certainly gives the MLS and Saudi Pro League the chance to sign other players but there was always going to be a small - or growing - change in order given the World Cup in North America next year and the growth of the MLS over the last 20 years, from when David Beckham moved to LA Galaxy in 2007.

I remember speaking to a chief executive at a Premier League club a few years ago and he predicted China and America would become larger players in the global football market, that they would want a piece of the worldwide TV revenue. China's influence has burnt out but you cannot see the same happening to the MLS.

  19. Alexander-Arnold makes early Madrid movepublished at 11:47 British Summer Time 2 June

    Trent Alexander-ArnoldImage source, Getty Images

Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure from boyhood club Liverpool was confirmed in May after the right-back decided he wanted a change of scenery with Real Madrid.

Alexander-Arnold was due to be out of contract at the end of June but Real Madrid have paid a fee - sources indicate it was around 10m euros (£8.4m) - to secure an early release.

He officially became a Real Madrid player on Sunday and he is now eligible to feature at the Club World Cup.

The 26-year-old has signed a six-year deal at the Bernabeu and his contract includes a 1bn euro (£840m) buy-out clause.

  20. Postpublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 2 June

Liverpool have comfortably been the busiest Premier League club so far this summer.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has already completed a move to Real Madrid and Caoimhin Kelleher also looks to be heading for the exit.

Jeremie Frimpong has been added to the title-winning squad and Liverpool are also pressing on with their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz.

Let's get you fully across all of that movement.
