"It’s about competition and performance. The door is always open for performance at a high level. Myles needs more starts and more minutes."

England v Serbia (Thu, 19:45 GMT)

    England

More from England head coach on Alex Scott: "He deserves to be with us. I first saw him closely in the Euros with the under-21 where he was excellent with Elliot Anderson. Since then, he has stepped up really well and is a regular started for Bournemouth.

"He has come a long way and has performed his way into this nomination. He will get a number 8 role and hopefully he can prove us right and show his personality."

    England

England head coach Thomas Tuchel on dropping Ollie Watkins.

He said he felt the Aston Villa striker was playing through discomfort and it makes no sense in bringing him into the squad at this time, but he can fight his way back if he is fully fit in March.

Tuchel added that Anthony Gordon and Marcus Rashford are options as strikers, while Phil Foden can as well and Jude Bellingham can also add goals.

  6. 'Wharton deserves to be in the squad'published at 11:12 GMT

England v Serbia (Thu, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel on picking Adam Wharton and Alex Scott: "It's two different positions and two different profiles.

"Adam, we're trying for the third time. I hope he stays fit this time. Elliot Anderson did very well for us in central defnesive midfield, but he plays through pain and discomfort at the moment. I think he'll be involved in weekend's game for Nottingham Forest. We are aware of that.

"So we added Adam to the team because he deserves it and we need to learn about and prepare if Elliot is not able to play both 90 minutes.

"Don't forget Jordan Henderson as well please. Adam is an add-on on the number six position."

  8. 'I don't see Foden as a winger anymore'published at 11:09 GMT

England v Serbia (Thu, 19:45 GMT)

    England

More from England manager Thomas Tuchel on Phil Foden: "Where Phil played against Borussia Dortmund is where I see him the strongest. He is close to the opponent's box and a mix between a number nine and a 10. Phil scores and assists more from the 18-yard box where he scored against Dortmund. He's in the pockets and assists.

"Main thing about him is that he gets a role in the central part of the pitch. I don't see him as a winger anymore. Maybe not anymore. He should have a central role that will bring out his strengths most. We've talked about this already with him."

England v Serbia (Thu, 19:45 GMT)

    England

More from England manager Thomas Tuchel on Jude Bellingham: "Jude comes back as a number 10. That's his best position. One of his key strengths is to score from this position.

"He has the ability arrive and score goals that a number nine would score, which is very unusual. It might seem like easy goals, but to arrive in these positions is one of his outstanding qualities. We will try to find space for him in the number 10 position to arrive and score these goals."

This isn’t Football Manager, you can’t pick your 11 best players, Tuchel’s building a team, shown by the best two qualifying performances in recent memory. This ethos trumps the ego of the superstar player, Rogers has shown more for England in nine games than Foden and Grealish have in 100.

How Tuchel can pick Henderson and not Jack Grealish is beyond me. Plus why only one number 9? If Kane gets injured then we might as well pack up.

Harvey Barnes not being called up over Bowen is a strange one for me.

  18. 'A special player' - Bellingham in Tuchel's wordspublished at 10:55 GMT

Thomas Tuchel's decision to leave out Jude Bellingham from the England squad for October's games against Wales and Latvia had sparked debate among fans and pundits alike.

Bellingham had failed to earn a call-up despite returning from a shoulder operation, with Tuchel saying the Real Madrid star had wanted to be included in the squad.

"He is a special player, and for special players there can always be special rules," Tuchel said.

"But we decided to keep with the straightforward decision of inviting the same group. Jude always deserves to be here. There is also the situation that he has not quite gathered his full rhythm again at Real Madrid."

Tuchel was keen to stress his positive relationship with Bellingham after he was forced to apologise to the midfielder earlier this year for calling his behaviour on the pitch "repulsive" during a live interview.

The German had said he used the words "unintentionally" and would be more careful in future.

Bellingham was also on the scoresheet against Juventus in the Champions League last month.

Alex Scott has been brilliant so no complaints. While I don't disagree with Watkins being removed I worry we haven't replaced him. Foden and Bellingham just make sense, Bellingham gets called "overrated" by people who just hate big teams. Foden is in top form so he deserves one more chance.

    Harry, Manchester

People are going on about Henderson being too old to be in the squad and yet are also saying Welbeck should be in the squad even though he’s only a year younger! If a player is in form, which Henderson is, shouldn’t they be included?
