England squad selection: Who would you pick?

  1. Where will Foden & Bellingham play?published at 10:46 GMT

One place where England do not lack cover is attacking midfield.

It's quite something when you think that they had been coping very well without world-class talents like Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden.

And players like Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke are yet to return.

The big question is whether Thomas Tuchel will stick with his ploy of using two fast, attacking wide players, try to find a place for Foden out wide or leave him to battle it out with Bellingham et al for the number 10 role?

Remember, Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers had been a standout player in that number 10 role in Bellingham, Foden and Palmer's absence.

Still feels like England are missing a world-class centre-back. Quansah Is also a very strange pick for me.

    Ben, Cambridge

My concern is the same as every other England fan. What happens, god forbid, if Kane gets injured. We basically had no chance when we lost Rooney during the Euros and the following World Cup.

    Tristan, Watford

Looking at the midfield options of Henderson and Scott, there's no wonder Kobbie Mainoo is desperate for a loan move.

    Ryan, Peterborough

  4. What is left to play for?published at 10:39 GMT

England secured their place in the 2026 World Cup finals with a 5-0 victory in Latvia in their last match.

They did that with two qualifiers remaining and will now be hoping to maintain their 100% record as Group K winners.

The Three Lions cannot be caught, with second-placed Albania seven points behind them, and third-placed Serbia eight points back.

Both Serbia and Albania are fighting for second place and a route into the play-offs, so still have plenty to play for.

The England players, meanwhile, will be hoping to cement their place in Thomas Tuchel's plans for the summer.

    World Cup qualifying Group K - England 18 points, Albania 11, Serbia 10, Latvia 5, Andorra 1

Feel for Welbeck. Been brilliant for over two years. Should have been in, not Grealish's biggest fan either but he deserved a recall.

    Steven, Middlesbrough

Only one striker!! Danny Welbeck should be in the squad for sure!

    Puffin

Yet again in-form Brighton player misses out. Welbeck at the moment top English scorer in Premier League. Why wasn't he picked?

    Toby, Hartimgs

The lack of an obvious replacement for Harry Kane is a bit of a head scratcher.

Ollie Watkins has not been in great form for Aston Villa, but there was a lot of love for Danny Welbeck before this announcement.

His link-up play and international experience, along with six goals in the first few months of this season, had Wayne Rooney calling for the return of his former Manchester United team-mate.

We asked you earlier whether Welbeck deserved a chance and you voted with the thumbs - three to one in favour...

Alex Scott deserves his call up. He's had a few injuries but he's a top, top player. At Bristol City, we knew he'd play for England when he was 17.

    Adam, Bristol

Well done Alex Scott. A much deserved chance to show what he can do.

    Dave, Luton

One name that was not on many people's lips in the run up to this squad announcement was Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott.

But those in the know, and pretty much every Cherries fan you will speak to, will say his call-up is fully deserved...

Get Involved - Does Henderson deserve the call-up?published at 10:24 GMT

Henderson shouldn't go to the World Cup. Wharton and Anderson deserve a spot on the plane and it would be a crime if he went ahead of one of them. Take Henderson as a 'coach' the way Argentina did with Aguero if his character is that important to the team.

    Jeuel, London

I don't understand the Henderson hate. He is playing well and his role in the squad is more than just a player. With a young squad, you need an experienced leader in the dressing room.

Thomas Tuchel could not have left out Phil Foden again, could he? Considering his form in the past month for Manchester City, whose resurgence has owed a lot to the young forward.

Here's a reminder of Foden's stats for England:

    • Age: 25
    • Appearances: 45
    • Minutes played: 2,932
    • Goals: 4
    • Assists: 9
    • Debut: 5 September 2020 v Iceland
    • Last cap: 24 March 2025 v Latvia

  14. Happy with the squad?published at 10:17 GMT

    Craig Nelson
    BBC Sport reporter

So that's six new players from England's last squad in October, and five who miss out.

In total, Thomas Tuchel has picked 25 players.

    What do we think?

Thumbs up if you are happy with that squad, thumbs down if you're not.

Strange to only have picked only one recognised number nine when Welbeck is right there.

    K, London

Only one recognised striker, doesn’t seem to make sense when you have Welbeck in form I get the age issue! But he’s the most in form striker at the moment and to not have Watkins in as cover is odd.

    Richard, Lincoln

  18. Understanding Tuchel's England squadpublished at 10:10 GMT

So there you have it - Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the next set of internationals. Here are some of the key lines:

    • Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Adam Wharton return to the squad after missing out in the last international break
    • Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott receives his first England call-up
    • But Tuchel has resisted calls to name Danny Welbeck in his squad, despite the Brighton striker having a strong season
    • Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jack Grealish miss out on selection again
    • And there's only one out-and-out striker in the squad - Bayern Munich's Harry Kane
