Internazionale are set to host Real Sociedad in a European game for the first time since beating them 3-0 in a UEFA Cup match in September 1979.
Real Sociedad have won just one of their nine major European matches against Italian teams (D4 L4), beating Inter 2-0 at home in the UEFA Cup in October 1979; they are winless in four away games (D1 L3).
Internazionale have won six of their last seven UEFA Champions League home group stage matches (L1), winning both games this season. The last time the Nerazzurri won all three home group games in a season was in 2010-11, when they were the reigning champions.
Real Sociedad have won their two away UEFA Champions League games this season, as many as they’d won in their previous 12 away games across the European Cup and Champions League combined (W2 D1 L9).
Internazionale have only lost one of their last 12 matches in the UEFA Champions League (W7 D4), with that one defeat coming against Manchester City in last season’s final (0-1). They’re unbeaten in their last seven home games in the competition, with six of those being victories (D1).
Among teams to have played across major UEFA European competition (Champions League, Europa League, Conference League) in both the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, Real Sociedad are one of only two teams with a 100% win record in away group stage matches, along with Bayern Munich. Real Sociedad won all three in the Europa League last season and two in the Champions League this season.
Manchester City (47%) and Barcelona (43%) are the only two teams who have made a higher percentage of their pressures in the final third than Real Sociedad (38%) in the UEFA Champions League this season.
Brais Méndez has scored in each of his two away UEFA Champions League appearances for Real Sociedad – in their major European competition history, only Javier De Pedro (1998-2003) and Alexander Isak (2021) have ever scored in three consecutive away appearances for the club. Meanwhile, no Spaniard has ever scored in his first three away Champions League appearances.
Lautaro Martínez has accounted for 29.3% of Internazionale’s shots in the UEFA Champions League this season (22/75); the highest percentage of any player for a team in the competition this term. The Argentinean has netted two goals in five Champions League games in 2023-24, just one fewer than he managed in 13 appearances in 2022-23 (3).
Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino has won more duels (51) and more aerial duels (28) than any other player in the UEFA Champions League this season. He also scored and assisted in his last game in the competition, a 3-1 victory over Benfica at the Reale Arena.
