Carlos Corberan raised his hands to his face when Alex McCarthy kept out Grady Diangana's header, he knows every moment counts.

All four teams have limped into the play-offs - none have been in great form - and all have their frailties and fragilities.

Yet it also means they know what to exploit over two legs, leaving every team confident of promotion.

It makes it a fascinating, open, play-off campaign, even if it is not of the highest quality.

He also clatters his team-mate Kyle Bartley in the process.

Will Smallbone's free-kick is comfortably headed away initially by Albion but Saints get the loose ball and win another corner.

Great play from Kyle Walker-Peters to scamper after an awkward pass and then win a free-kick by the corner flag after a foul by Conor Townsend.

Walker-Peters, a two-cap England international, has had a fine season for the Saints and I doubt he'll be at this level again next season regardless of where Southampton end this season.

Southampton are having more and more possession now.

They are slowing the game down.

This is what they do. They're good at it. They've got good players on the team.

West Brom win a throw in about 30 yards out down their right and that can mean only one thing, Darnell Furlong hurling it in.

Alex McCarthy is off his line and catches this one with ease.

Good display from the veteran keeper so far.

That's poor play from Kyle Bartley.

He's lost his marker. He could have knocked it anywhere but he's knocked it to the goalkeeper's hands.

He will be annoyed with that.

Southampton play risk and reward football.

This time it costs them as they try and play out from the back and a loose pass means Flynn Downes has to try and stop a Baggies counter.

He hacks down Mikey Johnston and he's the first name in the book.

The ball is hung up for Kyle Bartley at the back post but his header across the face is plucked from the air by Saints keeper Alex McCarthy.

WHAT A SAVE ALEX MCCARTHY!

Tom Fellows does well to go down the line down the Baggies right and stands up a great ball to the back stick.

Grady Diangana, not known for his heading, gets up brilliantly and heads it down but McCarthy does really well to turn it behind.

I'd like to see Grady Diangana get more into the game.

He's inventive but he's been too quiet for me in this game so far.

Mikey Johnston and Tom Fellows are the danger men for now.

Sekou Mara has been very still and stationary in this game so far.

Adam Armstrong looks quite frustrated with him, he wants to see more from his teammate.

After an intense start from West Brom, Saints are settling into this match nicely now.

It's shirt sleeve weather in West Bromwich all right.

Birmingham was under a rare but unmistakable heat-haze as I drove in up the Hagley Road this morning - and that's how it's turned out.

There are some passing clouds about - but it still must be sweltering out there. And Albion could not keep up the sheer pace of that pulsating start.

Half an hour in and no goals in two hours of Championship play-off football today.

Still, this one has been much more exciting than the midday game at Carrow Road.

Southampton win another corner down their left.

Sekou Mara goes for the spectacular after the ball drops nicely for him.

He makes meaty contact with his overhead kick it but it's well wide.

I think it's been a good start from Albion's point of view.

Unfortunately, they couldn't get an early goal and now Southampton have come back into it.

It's even-steven at the minute.

We knew Albion couldn't keep up the pace - especially in this heat. Sometimes we don't appreciate how hot it is down there on the pitch.

Wish I'd also used that chance to get a drink now.

Southampton have changed things up in their past two games, going to three centre backs.

It worked brilliantly at Leeds last week and, after a shaky start today, is starting to bear fruit now.

And that's drinks*.

The game is really starting to open up now.

Southampton are showing a little bit more enterprise.

Jim, Surrey: Early hunch, but if Southampton can weather this early storm, West Brom may well fade in the heat rather as Norwich did in the earlier match.
