  3. 'Expectation & noise a bit louder'published at 18:16 9 July

Netherlands v England (Wednesday, 20:00 BST)

    England

Harry Kane, on the pressure at the beginning and whether players did anything differently: "No, there weren't any meetings. As one of the leaders, as the captain, you're always talking to your players. Especially the newer players, they're always asking about experiences.

"I think we do a good job of preparing all the players before the tournament. There's a lot that goes into tournament football, there's a lot of media attention, so it's about dealing with all that.

"Over the years, we've handled that really well and this tournament has been no different. Maybe the expectation and noise has been a bit louder but I think we've handled that really well.

"Ultimately it's down to what we want to achieve but we have a really close togetherness. That's all we're thinking about."

  4. 'Van Dijk or De Ligt would both be tough'published at 18:14 9 July

Netherlands v England (Wednesday, 20:00 BST)

    England

England captain Harry Kane, on whether he would rather face Virgil van Dijk or Matthijs de Ligt: "[Matthjis] has been a [Bayern Munich] team-mate of mine, a fantastic player. I'm not sure if he's going to start tomorrow or not but if he does we've had a lot of battles in training so I'm sure tomorrow will be no different.

"I've had a lot of battles with Virgil over the years, sometimes he's won and sometimes I have.

"Whoever plays will be tough opponent. I'll always prepare in the same way to make them as uncomfortable as possible but they'll do the same as me.

"I enjoy playing against the best in the world, that's why you want to play these games. I'm looking forward to that challenge tomorrow."

  5. 'Past semi-final experience will help'published at 18:12 9 July

Netherlands v England (Wednesday, 20:00 BST)

    England

Captain Harry Kane, on the difference in mentality from 2018 - when England lost to Croatia in the World Cup semi-final - to now: "I think you just use past experiences to help. We've got a lot of players who have experienced big games at a club and international level. You try and use all that to prepare you in the best way possible and control the nerves and excitement.

"Tomorrow night will be no different, we had a goal and target of where we want to be and what we think's achievable. Step by step we're getting closer to that target. We prepare for tomorrow night like any other game.

"I just think during the game you lean on experience, the leaders who have been there and done that. Ultimately it's about going out there and taking the opportunity with both hands.

"Reaching back-to-back European Championship finals would be an amazing achievement and we have the opportunity to go and do that."

  6. 'We are prepared for anything'published at 18:10 9 July

Netherlands v England (Wednesday, 20:00 BST)

    England

Gareth Southgate: "Dutch teams don't tend to sit in and that's not what we've seen from them, but Ronald Koeman is an experienced coach. We are prepared for anything, it will be an exciting game with many good players on the pitch.

"We need another step from what we showed in the last game, it's a step up in quality of opponents and we are ready for that."

Harry Kane is asked by a journalist whether he knows how to say European champion in German.

"No I don't," says the England captain.

  8. 'Expectations weighed heavily'published at 18:07 9 July

Netherlands v England (Wednesday, 20:00 BST)

    England

More from Gareth Southgate: "One of our strengths over the years has been having less fear, showing less inhibition but at the beginning of the tournament the expectation weighed heavily and the noise from outside had never been louder. We couldn't quite get ourselves in the right place.

"What was impressive in the end was that we ground it out and found ways to win. I thought that shifted against the Swiss, you saw a freer version of us on the ball. The group changed, if not the messaging.

"Now it's about what is possible and not what might go wrong. This is now the chance to make history. We are trying to break new ground and that is not easy but the players have been resilient."

  9. 'Our fans will make themselves heard'published at 18:04 9 July

Netherlands v England (Wednesday, 20:00 BST)

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on reports that Dutch fans will outnumber England supporters: "One of the great things about this tournament has been the atmosphere inside the stadiums, it has been a different feeling for our players compared to the last three tournaments.

"It's added a different feel to the games, a different intensity. Our fans, will make themselves heard I'm sure. My memories of playing Holland with the orange in the stadium are vivid, these are the matches we want to play in. You live for these tournaments, that's where you step up."

  10. Southgate on changes and substitutionspublished at 18:01 9 July

Netherlands v England (Wednesday, 20:00 BST)

    England

Gareth Southgate: "There are different reasons for making changes. We were happy with the way the team were playing in previous games but we have made a sub at half time, it's not pre-conditioned.

"You are always looking at the freshness of the team and the balance of the team and whether changes are going to make an improvement to the team or not. But all of the players go into the game in good condition. The game will take us in a certain direction that will make that decision for us."

  11. 'As we get better the expectation gets higher'published at 17:59 9 July

Netherlands v England (Wednesday, 20:00 BST)

    England

England captain Harry Kane, on the squad dealing with pressure and whether they speak about it: "I don't think we speak about it in the dressing room. The ones who have had more experience know what it's like to play for England in major tournaments. As we've been getting better the expectation gets higher and that's been no different.

"Some will use it in different ways, some will use it as motivation, some will just block it out and focus on what they need to do. Everyone's different.

"From a team point of view we know what we need to achieve. We have a really important game, a really tough game we need to be ready for. We've prepared for that."

  12. 'I have no concerns about referee'published at 17:57 9 July

Netherlands v England (Wednesday, 20:00 BST)

    England

More from Gareth Southgate: "Everybody knows how I deal with referees, with complete respect for every referee. The two guys at Uefa who have been running the referees programme respect the way we do that.

"I have no concerns about who the referee is, he will be at a very high standard because that is how Uefa make those decisions. It's not even a consideration."

  13. 'Weghorst and Depay really good strikers'published at 17:55 9 July

Netherlands v England (Wednesday, 20:00 BST)

    England

England captain Harry Kane, on Memphis Depay and Wout Weghorst: " They're two different strikers, whoever plays bring something different to the Dutch team. From our point of view we'll always analyse the other team and where they can hurt us.

"They're two really good strikers and being in a semi-final of a European Championship means they're playing well. We'll hopefully keep them quiet but it will be a difficult task for sure.

"We're focused on what we can do to hurt them as well and that's what we're preparing for."

  14. 'We have to decide if Shaw is ready to start'published at 17:53 9 July

Netherlands v England (Wednesday, 20:00 BST)

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate: "Luke Shaw has been injured for four months, it wasn't a possibility for him to play until the last match where he made a good contribution. We have to decide if he is ready to start but we are very happy to have him back.

"He gives us balance, but Kieran Trippier has done a fantastic job. He has had many important nights with us over the last seven or eight years. He's great around the squad, we are very fortunate to have players like him in our squad."

  15. 'There will be times I'll need to be in the box more'published at 17:52 9 July

Netherlands v England (Wednesday, 20:00 BST)

    England

England captain Harry Kane, on whether the change of formation changes his game: "Not specifically. I think there are times where the rhythm, Jude [Bellingham] or Phil [Foden] might be in the middle and I might drift out. There are different examples.

"Of course as the striker you want to give as much space as possible to the midfielders, but then there's times you want to drag defenders into spaces they might not want to come either. I try to see how the game evolves, what the team needs from me, and exploit those situations.

"There will be times tomorrow where I'll need to be more of a focal point and in the box more and there will be times where I drop deep and try to make it uncomfortable for defenders in situations they don't want to be in."

  16. 'Fabulous group of players'published at 17:49 9 July

Netherlands v England (Wednesday, 20:00 BST)

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate: "I am very fortunate to have a fabulous group of players, we work as a team and we always have. We review what we could do better as a coaching team as well as what the players could do, we are very open about that.

"The way the 26 have bonded in the last few weeks has been special, half of the squad have had no tournament experience. We've got 21 of the players onto the pitch with no dead rubbers and that has made people even more connected."

  18. 'Kane has to trust his team-mates'published at 17:45 9 July

Netherlands v England (Wednesday 20:00 BST)

    Micah Richards
Former England defender to BBC Sport

Gary Lineker put it perfectly after the Switzerland game when he said that now Harry Kane has to stay high, but that’s not what he is used to doing for club or country. It was always going to be tough for him.

I think he just has to trust his team-mates because he doesn’t have to drop anymore, but he can still be the Kane that scores so many goals.

It’s not just Kane and Foden who are having to adapt, either. In many ways the whole team are still working out what they need to do but, despite that, we are into another semi-final of a major tournament.

Although I would not drop Kane or Phil Foden I can see the benefits of introducing players from the bench earlier than we have been, to freshen up our attack.

Kane gives England the lead over Denmark

Harry Kane has two goals at Euro 2024 - a close range finish against Denmark and a header against Slovakia. But the England captain's mobility has been questioned after a back issue stretching back to last season.

Kane, don't forget, is England's all-time leading goalscorer and a man who hit the back of the net 44 times in 45 appearances for Bayern Munich last season.

In all likelihood, Gareth Southgate will stick with his talisman for such a big game, but the fact his place is even being speculated about speaks volumes for his summer so far.
