Daniel: On Martin 10:07 - I agree Kane could play better deeper but Bellingham is not a number 9. It should be Toney. However it feels like Rooney all over again, who dropped deeper late in his career. The problem is Kane is captain and is now hard to drop.

  3. The main man for Citypublished at 13:23 British Summer Time 9 July

    Micah Richards
    Former England defender

Part of Foden's problem is that, alongside him, Bellingham is doing what he does so well and he wants to be the main man in this team.

The runs Bellingham makes sometimes are positive ones, but they are making it hard for Foden to get on the ball. It was always going to take time for that understanding to develop, but instead it feels like Foden is being judged already, after only one game in this new role.

I am not saying Foden is above criticism, though. Far from it. England’s warm-up game against Iceland was the perfect opportunity for him to kickstart his international career as a number 10, and he did not play well at all.

When Kevin de Bruyne was injured at the start of last season, I was saying how this was Foden’s chance to show he could play that role for Manchester City and he did it.

He was not an extra, or filling in. He was the main man in one of the best-performing teams in the Premier League, and I have been desperate for him to do the same for England.

He still can. Foden has taken stick for not scoring or creating the way we know he can, but let’s give him a game where he is getting on the ball in and around the area, and then make our minds up.

If that happens against the Dutch and Foden is quiet again then I’d accept that we need more from whoever plays in that position, but right now it is too harsh to judge him and, especially, leave him out.

We should also remember the identity of this team. If we had an attack-minded coach and Foden was not playing well then, again, I would understand the calls to bring someone else in.

Gareth Southgate is not that kind of coach, though. He has had success by being defensive and that is not going to change now.

  5. In defence of Foden - 'this is a tactical issue, not a player problem'published at 13:11 British Summer Time 9 July

    Micah Richards
    Former England defender

When England beat Serbia in their first game at these Euros, I was a BBC pundit alongside Cesc Fabregas and we discussed Phil Foden, who had played out on the left.

Cesc thought I was just being biased when I defended Foden on the show, because he is a player I love and I know him personally as well.

I wasn’t being biased at all, though. I just thought the England team that night was not set up for him to flourish and, four games on, I still feel the same way.

Like Harry Kane, there seems to be a lot of criticism of Foden on social media at the moment, with people calling for them both to be dropped for England’s semi-final against the Netherlands.

I know they can both play much better than they have done so far in Germany, but I would say the reason they have not been at their best is a tactical issue rather being down to the players themselves.

As for dropping them? Absolutely no chance.

Foden is still the England player who can open up a defence with a pass, or score a goal, if you give him the right role.

Kane is slightly different in that he needs to adapt his game to the way England are set up now, and the players he has around him, but again he is not someone we should be leaving out.

  6. Penalty dramapublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 9 July

Euro 2021 winner and 161-time England international Jill Scott, representing ITV, also saw her penalty saved BBC's Micah Richards.

Fortunately for her, teammate and colleague Roy Keane, a seven-time Premier League winner with Manchester United, was on hand to slot in the rebound.

  7. A moment to remember...published at 12:58 British Summer Time 9 July

As BBC Sport's Sam Webb mentioned earlier, he had a moment to remember in yesterday's BBC v ITV match in Berlin, getting past 85-time England international Gary Neville and scoring.

You can see him doing exactly that here...

Maybe Kane has always been the Kalvin Phillips replacement we’re supposedly desperately missing. And it’s where he’s put himself most of the tournament anyway. So there you go Gareth, play Kane alongside Rice with Toney up front. Sorted!

    Tom in London

Don't drop Kane! How have we got ourselves into this situation, apparently we no longer have a squad, just a team of underachievers (when it comes to winning games in 90mins) who are now apparently impossible to rotate...just look how few minutes most of the squad have played. Poor squad management will cost us.

  10. 'Nutmegged by Roy Keane'published at 12:43 British Summer Time 9 July

    Daryl Hammond
    BBC Sport Producer

Unfit as I was, I’d had a decent game by all accounts. Three assists and plenty of praise from Micah Richards, Jill Scott and Eniola Aluko on my control and quick feet. But all I can think about is getting nutmegged by Roy Keane.

Expected as he’s an former international footballer, but he made it look almost too easy. I approached Roy after the game and he rather apologetically said “I don’t usually do nutmegs, but there was no where else to go.

Members of the BBC and ITV teams working on Euro 2024 faced each other in a friendly five-a-side match in Berlin yesterday. BBC's team included Micah Richards, Izzy Christiansen and Rio Ferdinand, with Roy Keane, Gary Neville and Jill Scott among those in action for ITV.

  12. 'I'll remember yesterday for the rest of my life'published at 12:25 British Summer Time 9 July

    Sam Webb
    BBC Sport social media journalist

It's not every day you sit Gary Neville down and get him in trouble with Roy Keane. I'll remember yesterday for the rest of my life.

Even though BBC somehow lost to ITV (we were ahead until the final two minutes of the match), sharing a pitch with Micah Richards, Jill Scott, Rio Ferdinand, Izzy Christiansen, to name a few, has made my tournament. We were unlucky to lose - what an effort from the BBC team.

A personal highlight was going past Gary Neville (drop of the shoulder, left-foot finish, bosh) and hearing Roy Keane shouting at him from the touchline for failing to block the shot. I can go home happy.

  13. Man Utd increase offer for Everton's Branthwaitepublished at 12:19 British Summer Time 9 July

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Manchester United have increased their offer for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

The Toffees rejected a £35m bid from United for the England international last month.

It is understood the revised offer is about £45m, with the possibility of additional payments should set targets be met.

However, BBC Sport has been told that figure still does not match Everton’s valuation.

Into some sprint training now in a repeat of a drill involving getting a ball on and off a cone that involves running to and from the cones.

Plenty of energy being shown by a lot of England's squad, a big plus considering we are almost a month into the Euros at the end of what has been a long season.

The fact tomorrow will be the first time England have faced the Netherlands at a major tournament since 1996 says a lot about how far Gareth Southgate has taken England. I'm pretty sure I'm right in saying that if we do get through and go on to face Spain in the final... that too would be the first time at a major tournament since 1996?

    Chris

England definitely played Spain and the Netherlands at Euro 96...and Switzerland too, come to that.
