We asked you earlier whether any other goalkeepers had saved a penalty and scored in the same game after Dave flagged striker Niall Quinn's efforts for Manchester City against Derby.

Well you never let us down. Sadly, this response was from an anonymous donor so we can't namecheck him/her...

I think Niall Quinn could be the only outfield player to score and save a pen in the same game. But Chilavert did it in 1999 for Velez Sarsfield and Jorg Butt in 2000 for Hamburg. Both goalies scored a pen and saved one.

  2. Goalkeepers who score...tickpublished at 12:49 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March

Is there anything more heroic than a goalkeeper scoring a match-winning goal?

Maybe that is one final string Alisson needs to add to his bow...oh, wait a minute...

    Remember this in 2021?:

Goalkeeper Alisson scored an incredible injury-time winner as Liverpool claimed a significant victory in their quest to achieve a Premier League top-four finish by coming from behind to beat West Brom.

My favourite goalkeeper performance was by James Hobson in a highly-anticipated dads' match last weekend. Not only did he make unbelievable saves during the game, but he also saved two penalties in the shootout before stepping up to dispatch the winning penalty himself - a true local hero!

  4. 'His decision-making is exceptional'published at 12:40 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March

    PSG 0-1 Liverpool

Stephen Warnock assessed just why he rates Alisson Becker as one of the best goalkeepers in the world in the latest episode of Football Daily:

"His decision-making is exceptional. He doesn't come out into a crowd and try to catch things, because he is probably not as tall as most other goalkeepers. His punching is phenomenal, and his ability to punch the ball a long way.

"The main thing though is his decision-making in those one-on-one situations. In the first-half, there is one with [Ousmane] Dembele, Dembele probably thinks I have four or six yards on Alisson I can take my time, but before he knows it there is a yellow guy running at him and he's closing the space. That decision is done very, very quickly."

I vividly remember Tim Howard turning into a brick wall for the United States against Belgium in the 2014 World Cup for 90 minutes. 16 saves has got to be up there in the World Cup record books (if not the highest).

    Eric

Eric was one of a number of readers to mention this display from Tim Howard. He's also part of a select group of goalkeepers to get their name on the scoresheet in the Premier League, scoring for Everton against Bolton in 2011. As a member of the goalkeepers' union he refused to celebrate - a classy guy all round.

That display from Thibaut Courtois against Liverpool is certainly on the list of best-ever Champions League performances by a goalkeeper, you will not be too surprised to know.

Here are some that stick firmly at the forefront of the brain:

    • Alisson v PSG (Round of 16, 2025)
    • Thibaut Courtois v Liverpool (Final, 2022)
    • Fraser Forster v Barcelona (Group stage, 2012)
    • Jerzy Dudek v AC Milan (Final, 2005)
    • Petr Cech v Bayern Munich (Final, 2012)
    • Manuel Neuer vs Porto (Round of 16, 2008)

  8. 'It is about the mentality, I like to be front-footed' - Alissonpublished at 12:19 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March

    PSG 0-1 Liverpool

Alisson speaking to CBS Sports about making saves far from his line: "It is training but as a goalkeeper you need to have strong hands or you won't play for Liverpool. To make saves far from my line, it is personal, it is about the mentality as well. I like to be front-footed.

"I think as a striker if you look at a goalkeeper and he is still and then you look at the ball and when you look back up the goalkeeper is right in front of you - it is hard to do something. I can't always do that but if I can do that, I try to make the situation easier for me during the game."

  9. Alisson was 'phenomenal'published at 12:16 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March

    PSG 0-1 Liverpool

    Stephen Warnock
Former Liverpool defender on Football Daily

Wow. I mean, it was just phenomenal. It wasn't just one world class save, there were three or four in there. I just thought that he was outstanding. It's one of those games where you're just thinking no matter what you throw at him, he's going to save it. When he's at his best, he's the best in the world.

  10. Alisson in Wonderlandpublished at 12:14 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March

    PSG 0-1 Liverpool

We are going to return to Liverpool now, in particular THAT goalkeeping display from Alison Becker against Paris St-Germain, who fired down 27 shots on his goal, 10 on target, only for the Brazil stopper to save nine of them.

PSG always score at home, that's the rule, but the Reds' keeper had other ideas.

Our question to you is whether Alisson is the best keeper in the world?

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock believes he is...

I’m so pleased for Tyrone Mings and I think every player sympathises with him, what happened in the first game in Bruges.

With his injury, the way he has come back there was some scares in some games when he fell on his knee again, but he stayed on the ground and his defending was absolutely excellent. He’s such an authority in his defence. With Unai Emery, he wants his defenders to clear the ball and make recoveries, but also, the way he started the play and his exceptional clearance, coming back in and having the game of his life.

Tyrone Mings with that clearance at this stage of his career, that is one of his best performances to date.

Greatest ever smash and grabs: Liverpool's 2-1 victory over Arsenal in the 2001 FA Cup Final. Absolutely beaten up for most of the game then stole it with two late Michael Owen goals, marvellous!!

This is when it’s key to have someone like Unai Emery in there, who has been hugely successful in years before and will know that the tie isn’t over and make sure that messaging goes to his players.

The Villa players gave the ball to him for the penalty, he didn’t demand it. The players threw it at him.

'You take it, we believe in you.'

  16. Asensio's substitute recordpublished at 11:44 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March

    Club Brugge 1-3 Aston Villa

Marco Asensio's penalty for Aston Villa against Club Brugge came as a substitute.

It was the Spaniard's 10th goal in the Champions League when coming off the bench in a match.

It puts him three clear of any other player in the competition's history, with Thomas Muller, Karim Benzema and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the next best with seven each.

  17. 'For Villa to have Asensio is astonishing'published at 11:36 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March

Of Villa’s January signings, Rashford captured the imagination in England the most because he’s Marcus Rashford and because of everything that happened at Manchester United with that kind of narrative of his rebirth.

Marco Asensio has scored in a Champions League final, he’s played in 70 Champions League games, he was at Real for nine years. He is an elite footballer and because he’s been around for so long, as a substitute mainly for Real, you maybe overlook that a little bit. He is vastly experienced, he’s only 29, he’s not at the end of his career. For Villa to have an asset like that, who is still clearly getting up to speed, is astonishing.

The fact he is taking the penalty, a pressure penalty, that kind of speaks volumes. Also, of how Villa players regard him.

  18. 'Tame' performance from Leverkusenpublished at 11:29 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March

    Bayern Munich 3-0 Bayer Leverkusen

    Archie Rhind-Tutt
    Football journalist on Football Daily

Xabi Alonso had been unbeaten against Bayern Munich with Bayer Leverkusen in six previous games and the fact that it was so tame from Leverkusen, who had one chance when it was 1-0 and Jeremie Frimpong was through on goal, and Frimpong has had real problems with one on ones and this was a similar inccident facing Manuel Neuer.

The fact is Nordi Mukiele getting sent off in the second half made Xabi Alonso pull a face, and I have not seen so much concern from him during his time at Leverkusen because he knew, his side would of done well to get out of Munich with the score still being 2-0.

  19. Szczesny's redemption after Lisbon horror showpublished at 11:22 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March

    Benfica 0-1 Barcelona

It was a frantic, dramatic encounter back in January when the two sides last met in Lisbon and Raphinha's winner settled the outcome at 5-4.

The opening period showed promise of a similar enthralling tie as Kerem Akturkoglu's drilled shot forced Wojciech Szczesny into an early save, before Dani Olmo went close at the other end.

Vangelis Pavlidis, who scored a hat-trick in that 5-4 defeat and has scored 10 goals in his last seven appearances in all competitions, should have put Benfica ahead early in the second half.

But he scooped over the bar from Alvaro Carreras' cutback, before Barca keeper Szczesny made a brilliant reaction save moments later to deny the Greek forward.

The home side were dominant in the second half and recorded 15 shots with five on target, but it was forward Raphinha who struck the decisive blow to give Barcelona a slim advantage with their only second-half effort on target.

A late flurry of corners for the hosts made for a tense finale and Szczesny produced another fine save from Renato Sanches, a stark difference from his horror show in January where he was at fault for two of Benfica's four goals.

The Polish stopper was fortunate the late penalty award was overturned by the offside decision and it left Benfica with a tough task in the return.

For La Liga leaders Barca, an assured and professional performance extended their unbeaten run to 16 in all competitions.

Supporters of Borussia Dortmund and Lille will be paying close attention to Benfica's clash with Barcelona.

The winner of each of those two meetings will face each other in the quarter-finals next month.

As it stands, Barcelona have the better chance of advancing after their 1-0 first leg victory on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Dortmund and Lille played out a 1-1 draw in Germany on Tuesday night.
