Our Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) algorithm – which is calculated from a number of factors including age, contract status and form - has Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi valued at €47.9m (£41m), which is high for a player entering the final stages of his deal. But Spurs were willing to go higher and Palace can afford not to accept their bid.

  2. Why are there so few deals between Premier League clubs?published at 13:49 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

On the back of Crystal Palace rejecting a £70m bid for Marc Guehi from Tottenham:

"That's definitely a market shift. In years gone by, Matheus Cunha has probably left Wolves by now. But the bigger clubs know that they can likely get better value on the continent than shopping 'locally'.

"Indeed, look at all of the prominent deals in this window. Only Jaden Philogene (Villa to Ipswich, £20m) is a multi-million Prem-to-Prem deal. Sometimes now it's a case of the big sides not even bothering to ask, as they know the quoted fee will be huge.

"Couple that with the league being tight around the Champions League slots - which could be five or even six next season - and teams do not want to surrender that opportunity by selling a coveted market talent.

"We saw with Cunha, but more prominently Alexander Isak - Newcastle had absolutely no desire to sell while the Champions League is a real possibility."

Deloitte's latest Football Money League report had 14 Premier Leagues in the top 30 revenue-generating clubs in the world.

  3. 'Have Spurs left it too late?'published at 13:46 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

It's that time of the window, and with teams already erring on the side of desperation when doing business in January, that's multiplied as we reach the final hours of deadline day. Tottenham are simply desperate for defensive recruitments and were willing to go big on Guehi - a player who will have just 12 months remaining on his contract in the summer.

Perhaps it's indicative of Spurs' plight that at this moment in time, players might not see it as a project they want to be attached to, with Mathys Tel, Fikayo Tomori and Axel Disasi all thought to have rejected their advances. Have they left it too late to try and do business?

According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Fulham have had a bid rejected by Roma for their Turkey defender Zeki Celik.

The 27-year-old international, who has 53 caps, plays on the right, either at full-back or wing-back.

He spent four years at Lille, helping them to the Ligue 1 title in 2021, before moving to Roma for 7.4m euros the following season and has gone on to make 91 appearances in three years for the Giallorossi.

When 17-year-old Harry Amass caught the eye on Manchester United's pre-season tour of the United States, it seemed the youngster might be catapulted into the first team squad.

As it turned out, Erik ten Hag did not feel Amass was physically strong enough and that position has not changed under Ruben Amorim.

There was some talk Amass might be loaned out before the window closed but I have now been told that will not be happening and the England Under-18 international will remain in United's academy.

Rashford said: "It's only short term that I'm here so I want to make the most of my time here. The only way I can do that is by using my attributes and skillsets to help the team."

Ex-Manchester United players to have have worn the number nine shirt at Aston Villa are Dwight Yorke and Dion Dublin.

"I think they're a club that are in a good position in the league and are looking to keep pushing," said Rashford.

"They're still in the Champions League. Have a good ambitious manager and a talented squad."

Manchester United need a striker like a cup of tea needs a biscuit—without one, it just feels incomplete. Hojlund is trying, but relying on a 20-year-old to carry the goal-scoring burden is like expecting a trainee pilot to fly a jumbo jet solo. Get a proper No. 9 in before the window shuts!!!

Aston Villa still fully expect to wrap up the loan signing of Marco Asensio from Paris St-Germain but there is less certainty surrounding their interest in Chelsea central defender Axel Disasi.

The 26-year-old is available on loan but will not be moving to Spurs.

At the moment any potential switch to Villa Park also looks off, but there is still a sense from those around the deal that this one might just be revived before deadline to allow manager Unai Emery to strengthen his resources in central defence.

  16. Man Utd wait on Martinez injury newspublished at 13:11 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Manchester United unveiled two defenders at Old Trafford yesterday in Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven and another who was expected to leave Old Trafford remains - for now - in Tyrell Malacia.

Those players may be needed even more now as Lisandro Martinez looks set for an extended spell on the injury list after being stretchered off in tears during yesterday's defeat by Crystal Palace.

Martinez appeared to jar his knee as he tried to turn and went down in agony.

Head coach Ruben Amorim said he thought the damage was 'serious' but we have not have any further communication from Old Trafford since.

Manchester United are in a tricky situation.

They have been condemned as a club for overpaying on players of limited quality. Their current squad clearly is deficient in a number of areas.

So, do they push to sign someone, taking a chance it does not work - thereby getting more criticism for following the same path as before - or stick with what they have - and get criticised for not spending.
