You can have slightly more jeopardy in the CL league phase by using the NFL model (although I don’t like using any US sporting system) 22 teams go through - top 6 get a bye - 1 leg knockout to get to final 14 - top 2 get another bye - 2 legged knockout to get your final 8 and as usual from there.

  2. What is the difference between finishing ninth and 24th?published at 12:04 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

Teams that finish between ninth and 16th will be seeded in the knockout phase play-off draw.

It means they will face a team that finishes between 17th to 24th.

Who the seeded teams will face will be determined by a draw but clubs will only have two possible opponents.

For example, the teams that finish 11th and 12th are paired together and will play a team that finishes 21st or 22nd.

Another bracket will pair the teams that finish ninth and 10th in the table, playing either the team that was 23rd or 24th.

The two pairs of fixtures will be drawn into opposite halves of the overall draw and the seeded teams will play the second leg of the play-off at home as a reward for finishing higher than their opponent in the league phase.

Unlike in previous years, teams eliminated from the Champions League - either in the group phase or via losing a play-off - will not drop into the Europa League.

  3. When is the Champions League play-off draw?published at 11:57 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

The knockout phase play-off draw takes place at 11:00 GMT on Friday 31 January in Nyon, Switzerland.

The top eight qualify automatically for the round of 16 and those finishing ninth to 24th compete in a two-legged play-off.

The first legs will take place on 11/12 February followed by the second legs on 18/19 February.

  4. How many teams qualify for the knockout phase?published at 11:50 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

Here's a reminder of what the 36 league-phase teams are aiming for.

Those finishing in the top eight automatically progress to the last 16, where they will be seeded.

They will await the winners of eight two-legged knockout play-off ties featuring the clubs ranked from ninth to 24th.

Those finishing between ninth and 16th will be seeded and face a team placed 17th to 24th, with the advantage of playing the second leg at home.

The clubs 25th or lower are eliminated and do not gain entry to the Europa League.

The play-off ties take place mid-February, with the last-16 matches in the first two weeks of March.

I like the new format as it provides much better match-ups than the old group stage. The play-offs should be scrapped as it just gives the big names a cop out and makes the first part meaningless.

Eliot: Mark 10:57 Rashford has shown on the pitch that he isn’t able to maintain a half decent work-rate for the team, and when Casemiro plays teams now steamroll right past him. It’s one thing training at the same level as everyone else when the cameras are on. The club is better off without the pair of them.

I personally do not have any sympathy for Rashford. Both for Man U and England, he turned up not as a fighter. The team has been going through a lot of turmoil on and off the pitch over last years, that's correct. But just look at Rashford vs Bruno Fernandes attitude dealing with same. I am afraid Marcus's head has been turned by becoming a "brand."

That's a wrap from the open part of Manchester United's training session but you can still go back and view it under the watch and listen tab at the top of the page.

A lot of focus was predictably on Marcus Rashford and though the forward did initially look downbeat, he was sharing laughs with his teammates come the latter stages.

Will he do enough to convince manager Ruben Amorim to involve him in tomorrow evening's squad?

Paid close attention to Casemiro and Rashford in that short session. Neither seemed to be training any differently than anyone else. I think the club are spinning a narrative to try and force out higher earners by turning fans against them.

Winger Alejandro Garnacho remains very much involved in the Manchester United training group this morning, despite transfer speculation.

The 20-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from Manchester this January with Premier League rivals Chelsea reportedly interested in his signature.

  14. Sympathy for Rashford?published at 10:45 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

Marcus Rashford's relationship with Manchester United as a club has deteriorated in recent months. He hasn't played since December and pundits and former players have said there is "no way back" for the star at the club.

But he was once their rising star. Rashford has won six trophies with United including the Europa League.

He was also in incredible form just two years ago. In the 2022/23 season he played 56 games and scored 30 goals.

Nick, VWGS: The expanded Champions League format presents a seemingly easier qualification path than the previous system, with the required points per game projected to decrease by 20%.

This aligns with the increased number of knockout stage teams from 16 to 24, reducing the elimination rate from 50% to 25%. Maybe this is too kind, given just 1.25 points per game is required to reach the knockout stages and somewhat dilutes the purpose of the initial league.

A potential refinement could involve changing automatic qualification for the last 16 to the top 12 teams in the league phase and putting the next eight teams - from 13th to 20th - into a play-off for the remaining four positions.

  20. Will Rashford be present at Man Utd training?published at 10:11 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

FCSB v Man Utd (Thu, 20:00 GMT)

    Manchester United

The big question going into Manchester United's training session this morning is whether or not forward Marcus Rashford will be present.

Manager Ruben Amorim claimed he would rather have his 63-year-old goalkeeping coach on the bench over Rashford after Sunday's 1-0 victory over Fulham and reports have since claimed that the two are no longer on speaking terms.

This time last week Rashford was in full training with his teammates and looked incredibly upbeat during the session.

Will that be the case today?
