A stoppage-time goal from Samuel Cleall-Harding earned Scotland Under-21s a draw in Azerbaijan, with the visitors picking up red cards at the beginning and end of a feisty second half.

Dunfermline defender Jeremiah Chilokoa-Mullen was sent off for tugging an opponent back with the Scots leading 2-1 and the resulting free-kick led to a penalty for handball.

Winger Adedire Mebude, who plays with Westerlo in Belgium, used his elbow to block the shot and picked up a second booking moments after Cleall-Harding's 92nd-minute header made the game 3-3.

Xayal Aliyev gave the hosts an early lead with a fantastic strike and converted the spot-kick to level the game following first-half replies from David Watson and Luke Graham.

Kilmarnock midfielder Watson, captaining Scot Gemmill's side, deflected in a shot from Emilio Lawrence before his corner was headed home by the Dundee centre-half.

A deflected effort from Sahin Ibrahimov gave Azerbaijan another lead against 10 men on 79 minutes not long after a Cleall-Harding header struck the crossbar.

However, the Dundee United defender, on as a half-time replacement for Graham, got on the end of Kristi Montgomery's delivery to ensure a share of the spoils.

With Scotland down to nine men, Cleall-Harding blazed a great chance over the top before claiming his first effort had been blocked by a hand.

There were several flashpoints on the final whistle and Azerbaijan's Xayal Aliyev was shown a second yellow card.

Gemmill's team remain fourth in their European Championship qualifying section, with their only win in four outings a 12-0 routing of Gibraltar.

Portugal lead the way on maximum points, with Czech Republic and Bulgaria sitting second and third.
