Discussing the quality of centre-back Virgil van Dijk, Arne Slot said: "Virgil deserves every compliment he gets.

"He's been outstanding for the club since he's been here and outstanding for me since I've been at the club.

"He showed that again yesterday. Virgil, like many others, has had a good season, but he will want to make it a great season."

  2. Slot to use players 'that haven't played so much'published at 10:57 Greenwich Mean Time

Plymouth Argyle v Liverpool (Sun, 15:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Liverpool manager Arne Slot says he will look to rotate his squad this weekend as the Reds, still fighting on four fronts, take on Plymouth Argyle.

"It is always a tricky tie, no matter what team you play, because it is an away game and it is probably their 'final', as is often the case when Liverpool goes anywhere," Slot said.

"I think it is important in these moments for players that don't get much playing time to have that playing time, so that if we ever need them then they are ready. If you never play them, it is so difficult for them to be ready if we do get some injuries or suspensions.

"We will definitely use some players that haven't played so much."

My twin brother was a goalkeeper, me a striker. We faced each other just once. My team were awarded a penalty. Bizarrely our captain who was a centre half insisted on taking it. My brother made a great save, but like all good strikers I was following in and hit the rebound towards the top corner. Somehow he got up and tipped it over the bar. Still bugs me 30 years later.

Here's what Liverpool manager Arne Slot had to say on the quality in his squad, after asked being asked about whether Conor Bradley is ready to be Liverpool's first choice right-back.

"For many positions, we have two [players]. [Two] good right-backs, two good left-backs, more than two good centre-backs, and I could go on.

"Right-back is just an example of that."

  7. FA Cup tie 'too early' for Alexander-Arnold returnpublished at 10:44 Greenwich Mean Time

Plymouth Argyle v Liverpool (Sun, 15:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Here's Liverpool manager Arne Slot discussing Trent Alexander-Arnold's injury situation: "No, I don't think he is ready yet. This game [against Plymouth] is going to be too early for him.

"It is difficult to say if he will be back [for the Merseyside derby]. It's not going to take months or even weeks, but that game is only three days after the Plymouth Argyle one. Let's wait and see if he is available.

"We also want to look at it long-term because we don't want to take any risks with so many games coming up afterwards. If he is fit, then we will use him."

  8. Bradley stars in Alexander-Arnold's absencepublished at 10:39 Greenwich Mean Time

Trent Alexander-Arnold would be a big miss in most teams - but, in Conor Bradley, Liverpool appear to have themselves a more than adequate successor.

Bradley impressed in last night's semi-final second leg, which Alexander-Arnold missed after sustaining an injury during last weekend's 2-0 victory over Bournemouth.

He had more touches than any Liverpool player on Thursday night and repeatedly got up and down the pitch, as shown by his touch map below.

The Northern Ireland international completed 51 passes, one of which was the inch-perfect assist for Dominik Szoboszlai to slot home goal number three of the evening.

Discussing the 21-year-old's performance after the game, former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp said "he is fearless and has the world at his feet" before adding that he "loves the way he plays."

Liverpool manger Arne Slot confirms Trent Alexander-Arnold will not be fit to take part in Liverpool's FA Cup fourth round tie at Plymouth Argyle on Sunday.

But he added the right-back could return for next Wednesday's Merseyside derby at Everton.

    .

I've been to Wigan to speak to Steven Sessegnon as the defender prepares for an FA Cup fourth round tie which could see him face his twin brother Ryan.

Steven and Ryan played alongside one another for 10 years as they rose through Fulham's academy before playing for the first team together.

Ryan left Fulham for Tottenham in 2019 before returning last summer - by which time Steven had left the Cottagers for League One Wigan.

Now the 24-year-old brothers are set to be reunited on the same pitch on opposite sides when Wigan host Premier League Fulham on Saturday.

Steven says it will be a "once-in-a-lifetime" moment if he does get to play against his twin, adding: "We know one another inside out. Ryan is my twin and the game is against my former club. It's going to be exciting for all the family."

  14. Amorim not surprised Van Nistelrooy did better at Man Utdpublished at 10:18 Greenwich Mean Time

Man Utd v Leicester (20:00 GMT)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Ruben Amorim was his usual honest self when he spoke to the media yesterday ahead of Manchester United's FA Cup fourth round tie with Leicester.

It means a meeting with Ruud van Nistelrooy, who stood in as United boss for four games after Erik ten Hag had been sacked. They were all at home - two against Leicester. United won three and drew one, which is better than Amorim, who has lost five at Old Trafford.

The former Sporting boss does not feel that record is a surprise.

"It’s not awkward," he said. "I think it’s normal.

"He knew the team, he worked with the team. I made some decisions that are really hard, to sometimes create problems and friction in the team.

"I’m a really proud guy, but I take this normally. They were better than me in training this team, so I’m trying to help them see the game the way I see, to improve the performance, and also the results."

  15. 'We are always going to try and go to the next round'published at 10:12 Greenwich Mean Time

Everton v Bournemouth (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola on the FA Cup: "For me, I don’t relate the competitions, it’s not like in the league you need more or you need less.

"I think whatever is your position in the league, we are always going to try and go to the next round and be successful in the cup, but we have a very difficult opponent in front.

"At the end there is no guarantee if you rest players that you are going to win the next game so we will try to go there and win the game, no win, that is going to be difficult."

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola on Eli Junior Kroupi: "He is a player that the club controlled from before, obviously with a relationship with Lorient.

"I think it was a good chance for the club to sign someone, for his age, he is ahead of the normal trajectory of a player. I think he's performing very well, he has been very successful with Lorient and the national team. I'm very happy."

  17. PSR has changed the club's recruitment strategy - Howepublished at 10:02 Greenwich Mean Time

Birmingham v Newcastle (Sat 17:45 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle were one of only a handful of clubs who did not make a first-team signing in the winter transfer window, but Eddie Howe was asked about some of the young players the club brought in last month:

"Making stars is something that the club has had a vision to do since I arrived. The guys in the other building [academy] can really help develop and flourish [players] and nurture them into the first team.

"With PSR, I think we are probably more weighted to that direction. If you can bring one or two gems through then it can have a massive difference and help try and achieve everything we want to here.

"There is still room for signing established players and there has to be because of the size club that we are. It is a mix of both really."

  18. We will do things differently from our last EFL Cup final- Howepublished at 09:57 Greenwich Mean Time

Birmingham v Newcastle (Sat 17:45 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was asked if he will approach this year's EFL Cup Final any differently to the one he lost in 2023: "I think we will be doing things slightly differently, but not from a superstitious viewpoint.

"I was more superstitious as a player, as a manager I tend to look at things slightly differently. I've become a lot more free in myself. I've got to get the players in the best condition and let fate do the rest of the work."

Get Involved - 'Slot's Liverpool a joy to watch'published at 09:52 Greenwich Mean Time

Felt like I aged at a higher rate during Klopp's time. But now, I feel like my aging process starts to slow down and even starting to reverse with the more measured approach and calmness of Slot's Team. Last night was a joy to watch.

    Walt

For me, the most telling part of Arne Slot’s style, compared with Klopp’s full-on approach, is how much more measured it is. First half: sniff out the tactics and do enough. Then move through the gears as required, win the match, and move on. Consummately professional, and always with enough in reserve.

A bit of news to bring you.

Celtic have been handed a €10,000 (£8,340) fine for the "throwing of fireworks" in their Champions League defeat at Aston Villa last month.

During the match, a smoke bomb was thrown onto the Villa Park pitch from the away section of the ground.

Following Uefa's investigation into the incident, Celtic were handed two changes: the lighting of fireworks, and the throwing of objects.
