Liverpool bossed it from minute 1, final will be tough bring on the next game! In Slot we trust.

Newcastle will be a much tougher challenge for us in the final, but we have the strength and depth to overcome. The contract situation is clearly not affecting Mo Salah, he's still a potent threat in front of goal.

  2. What happened to 'Ange-ball' at Anfield?published at 08:36 Greenwich Mean Time

Liverpool 4-0 Tottenham (Liverpool win 4-1 on agg)

Before the two Carabao Cup semi-final legs, the previous meeting between these two saw Liverpool win a nine-goal thriller 6-3 at Tottenham in the Premier League.

While this was another heavy defeat, last night's Spurs performance felt a far cry from that one.

Sticking to their 'Ange-ball' principles, in the 6-3 loss Tottenham were far too open at the back but they were at least set up to cause some damage.

On Thursday, it was hard to see where a goal would come from. The decision to sit deeper and attempt to defend what they had did not pay off for Spurs, who were behind on aggregate from the 51st minute.

Ultimately, however, the outcome was no different.

That was pathetic showing from Spurs, didn’t feel or even look like it was a semi-final game. Ange will not get the sack reason being no decent coach out there would want to take this team.

Where are your heads at today, Tottenham fans?

Do you still have faith that Ange Postecoglou can get the club on the right track, or was last night too painful a defeat?

Back-to-back victories after a run of just three wins in 10 matches temporarily relieved some pressure on the Australian in what has been a torrid season at times.

At Anfield, Postecoglou appeared to abandon the 'Ange-ball' style which initially made him so popular with the club's supporters, instead attempting to sit deep and protect their one-goal first-leg advantage.

But the result was that they crashed out of the cup having had just five shots, none of which were on target, with just eight touches in the opposition box compared to Liverpool's 55.

As an Arsenal fan, this might be the first time in my adult life that I feel sorry for Spurs. It’s a very odd feeling. But I’m also finding it funny so no change there.

It was a Tottenham performance that fell well short of the exciting, high-tempo 'Ange-ball' style of play that Spurs fans have become accustomed to under Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs have won just one trophy since Daniel Levy became chairman in 2001, although Postecoglou insisted in September that he "always" wins something in his second season at a club.

"We have given up a good opportunity tonight and we cannot shy away from that. We were in a good position to get to the final," Postecoglou said.

"I guess that Liverpool deserved the victory. They were the far better team. We were not able to get a grip of the game.

"We allowed them to get into the game and we were not as aggressive as we needed to be. We didn't get the game started off in the right footing. It was very difficult for us to wrestle that control back."

As defined by stats gurus Opta, a shot hitting the frame of the goal is classified as a shot off target - unless the ball then goes into the net.

So shots on target includes all goals scored and any goal-bound shots saved by the goalkeeper.

What’s Redknapp talking about no shots on target?! Spurs hit the post a couple of times as I remember and Liverpool didn’t score until the 34th minute. I agree Liverpool was dominant, but it’s more LFC were excellent than Spurs were abject.

    Anon

Define “on target” as Son hit the crossbar, surely that’s on target as it’s hit the frame of the goal? I’m a reds fan and happy we made the final but feel the narrative is wrong for hammering spurs all over?

Right, it appears we need to temporarily address the definition of shots on target, as some of you believe we're being a bit harsh on Tottenham with that stat.

Really pleased to see Slot taking the league cup seriously from the off as even Klopp looked down his nose at the cup competitions in his first few seasons. Feel really sorry for the Spurs fans who travelled all that way to watch their team play like that last night, it was men vs boys out there with Liverpool still looking for goals at 4-0 whilst Spurs were still sitting back at 1-0 down. Very nervous about playing Newcastle in the final, always prefer to be the underdogs and Newcastle will have the whole country behind them. Their fans will be in full voice at Wembley. It's going to be a boss day!

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher did not hold back on Tottenham either.

"It goes back to that stereotype we all have with Tottenham. There's definitely a mental block with the club," he said on Sky Sports.

"Right now, that is a typical Tottenham team. People say about Ange Postecoglou, the fans have got Spurs back, they've got their club back.

"Yeah... they've got the club back we've all watched for 40 years. They're nice on the eye when things are going well, but they never win a big game and when they get beat, they get beat badly."

Well, Levy, you get what you pay for. You had a month to help the manager (who had repeatedly said the squad needed it) and you managed to get two loan players in two days before the biggest game of our season. Shall we just sack Ange and restart the whole process of failure, Daniel?

    Matt

I'm now ambivalent to whether the manager stays or goes, because we seem to have tried everything to bring success and I fear whoever would come in would take us through the same rinse and repeat cycle.

"Abject", "damaging" and "disgrace". Those were all words used to describe Tottenham's Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg defeat by Liverpool.

I did warn you, Spurs fans, it's going to be a tough morning. But you knew that.

"I cannot get my head around not having one shot on target in the semi-final. They were so abject," said former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp on Sky Sports.

"I cannot remember a team in my lifetime go down with less of a fight than Tottenham did today.

"There have been some lows but that today, looking at that scoreline, is just horrendous."

Liverpool manager Arne Slot was delighted to book his first place in an English final - but warned "it's only special if you can win things".

This is 46-year-old Dutchman Slot's first season in English football, having moved from Feyenoord in the summer to replace Jurgen Klopp, and the first time he will have been to Wembley.

"It's only special if you can win things. We know how difficult that's going to be as Newcastle are an impressive team," said Slot, who won the Dutch Cup with Feyenoord last season.

"It's always nice to play a final. We come in every day, we try to improve the team. The players try so hard to improve themselves, but in the end it's about reaching finals and winning things.

"I think we had some big nights here already but to reach a final should also be special, and that is what it is. In that perspective it has been the most special evening."

When we asked for your predictions during yesterday's live text, despite the first-leg scoreline it was certainly the Liverpool fans who were most confident - and the Tottenham fans lacking in belief that their team could translate that 1-0 advantage into a place in the final. It says an awful lot about where both clubs are currently at.
