  2. Who could make their debuts this Premier League weekend?published at 15:17 British Summer Time 12 September

Deadline day seems so long ago now but it was only two weeks back. That day impacts this weekend of Premier League action.

Because of registering rules, some newly signed players could make their debuts this weekend for their new clubs.

Players needed to be signed by midday on deadline day in order to play in Game Week 3 of the Premier League. But as we all know, some deals take a while to get over the line and so several players will make their bows this weekend.

But which ones? Let's take a look.

  3. Frank - 'I believe we can do something' against Citypublished at 15:12 British Summer Time 12 September

Man City v Brentford (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Brentford

Brentford boss Thomas Frank on Manchester City and Erling Haaland: "Close to impossible [on getting close to Haaland]. A lot of teams have tried to neutralise him. I think he is a great player. I think his movements in the box is probably some of the best we have ever seen. The way he anticipates and is constantly on the move and focused and aware of where to position himself. That’s top level.

"He is so focused to make sure he times it in the right moment. He is a decent player, in the best team in the world. It is a top team but we know if we hit a good level we can make it difficult for them. We will do what we can, to play a good game but I believe we can do something."

  4. 'Hopefully he will learn a lot over the years'published at 15:07 British Summer Time 12 September

Man City v Brentford (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Brentford

Brentford boss Thomas Frank on new signing Gustavo Nunes: " [Igor] Thiago is, in many ways, fantastic. He is like a big brother [to Gustavo Nunes]. He’s teaching him to be a pro.

"Gustavo is 18, hopefully he will learn a lot over the years. Gustavo is a player I think can help soon, but he has had a minor injury, he won't be on the pitch for the next week."

Brentford boss Thomas Frank on Ivan Toney who joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli: "He will be missed no doubt about that. I will definitely miss him and we wish him all the best for the future. We know how it is when players leave, grow or step into new positions.

"We got good practice last year. We had two thirds of the season without him. The players have already stepped up and they're growing, like trees. In the dressing room, the players need to take responsibility and be leaders. Ivan was a great player on and off the pitch. Players are ready to step in. In terms of leaders, we have players ready to step in."

Nuno Espirito Santo has known Morgan Gibbs-White since the midfielder was 17.

The pair worked together at Wolves and Nuno gave Gibbs-White a platform as a teenager as they won the Championship in 2018.

It means he has seen the now 24-year-old at his lowest, both on and off the pitch.

Gibbs-White made 32 appearances in all competitions in 2018-19 - after Wolves returned to the Premier League under Nuno - before struggling to make a consistent impact the next year and was caught breaking Covid regulations in May 2020.

He then took steps back to go forwards with loans at Swansea and Sheffield United before his switch to the City Ground in 2022 and, ultimately, a reunion with Nuno.

He has flourished at Forest, proving those who questioned a pricetag which could rise to £42m wrong, to earn his first senior England cap against Ireland on Saturday.

Nuno prefers not to heap praise on individuals so when asked about the new England man on Thursday he pivoted to praising all of Forest's internationals during the break but, tellingly, he expects Gibbs-White to improve after his time with the Three Lions.

Some could view it as a bit of psychology but it is Nuno's way of continuing to push a player he has helped mould over the last seven years.

  7. 'We are still going through a natural period of transition'published at 14:51 British Summer Time 12 September

Crystal Palace v Leicester (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Leicester City

On how he has used the international break, Leicester City boss Steve Cooper said: "We have tried to maximise the international break as much as we can but a lot of players have also left to represent their country. But we did get some good work done with the players that remained.

"With players joining late in the window we are still going through a natural period of transition. We are also still trying to implement who we want to be in the Premier League and get the senior players to drive it and embrace the challenge I am putting on them.

"Hopefully we can improve results because we could have got more points than what we have now, for sure. We know there have been positives in the performances but now we have to start getting results.

"We have to own that as staff and players and we believe we can do that."

  8. Foxes team newspublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 12 September

Crystal Palace v Leicester (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Leicester City

Leicester City boss Steve Cooper confirmed there are no new injury concerns ahead of Saturday's trip to Selhurst Park.

"Some players are still recovering from games [international], which is normal, and some have and some long travel. There are no disadvantages to that as every Premier League team will lose a lot of players and they come back staggered. We are no different and we are just adapting like you have too."

On Odsonne Edouard not being eligible to play as he is on loan from Crystal Palace: "It is a bit frustrating but they are the terms of his loan. We are looking forward to introducing him when we can."

  9. Cooper - Good to have 'clarity' on PSR chargespublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 12 September

Leicester City boss Steve Cooper on the club being cleared of any PSR charges: "It’s obviously a positive thing. Personally, even before joining the club were pretty calm about the situation. It is definitely a club that is upfront with you and tells you where things are. And it was an obvious question anyone joining the club would ask them and in general have been very calm.

"Day to day it hasn't been too much of a distraction. It was something we talked about with the team in terms of noise. We want a culture here of no excuses. It adds a little bit of frustration as things could have been different in the window if we had found out earlier. I’ll have to get over that but I am really happy with the squad.

"It is good that the supporters have clarity and so does the game. We were ready as a group of players and staff to stand up and fight for the club if it was a negative decision.

"We have still got to make sure we are still together as a club and we show how strong we are. That all adds to the challenge but it is one we are ready for."

  10. Coleman 'touch and go' for the weekendpublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 12 September

Aston Villa v Everton (Sat, 17:30 BST)

    Everton

On whether new loan signings Armando Broja and Orel Mangala will feature on Saturday, Everton boss Sean Dyche said: "Armando's got an injury so that'll take a bit of time. We know from his time at Forest that Orel can deal with the Premier League. He signed then went away but he's come in today, been bright and breezy, and wants to be part of the group. We'll assess it as we go on."

On Seamus Coleman's fitness after an apparent injury playing for the Republic of Ireland, plus the status of Jarrad Branthwaite and Nathan Patterson: "Seamus is touch and go but we'll see how he recovers from that, tomorrow more so.

"Jarrad is just [training] on the grass now so he's at the beginning process and Patto's the same. They're starting to train with us every day so they'll get that training period [first] to be classed as fully fit."

Before the international break, Bournemouth stunned Everton with a late fightback to come from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Goodison Park. That left the Toffees bottom of the Premier League after three games, with zero points and a minus-eight goal difference.

On his players regrouping, Everton boss Sean Dyche said: "Most [players] go away, most disappear straight away. A lot of people say 'well, he's got this time to work with all the players'.

"You haven't, they all go somewhere. I've always marvelled at that comment, it's always surprised me. They've just come back today, so you don't get that much time."

  12. 'Takeover deal not yet reached stage where prospective owner speaks with manager'published at 14:24 British Summer Time 12 September

Aston Villa v Everton (Sat, 17:30 BST)

    Everton

On the club statement about prospective owner John Textor, Everton manager Sean Dyche said: "If you're a prospective owner, you're going to ask certain questions, finding out about what you're going to buy and to get a feel."

On Textor saying he wants to speak to Dyche about what kind of players he wants to coach: "I haven't had the chance [to speak yet], I don't think the deal's reached that position. If you're a prospective owner, you probably would want to build a relationship, or certainly know the manager's thoughts.

"He isn't the current owner but if he did take over I'm sure you'd have that conversation [about players], I think that's standard practice.

"Over my years as a manager, I've dealt with many situations, many different players and many different playing styles. That's just part of being a Premier league manager. I've tried to adapt to whatever challenge I've had with the group of players I've been given."

  13. 'My situation is secondary, my first thought is about winning games'published at 14:19 British Summer Time 12 September

Aston Villa v Everton (Sat, 17:30 BST)

    Everton

On whether there's any uncertainty over his future, Everton manager Sean Dyche said: "The bigger picture of the club is the main focus. The club is still nowhere near where it wants to be.

"We've done loads of work on the playing side of things, bringing in a lot of money in transfers and balancing out the contractual side of the club. That was certainly the focus when I came here.

"My situation is secondary to the situation the club is in. We want to win games, that's my first thought. It's not about myself or contracts. It's about my staff and the players aligning to win games. That remains my focus."

On staying beyond this season: "The ambition here changes weekly. It's been an up-and-down period, for the club not just for me. We've brought some level of calmness during the process but at the minute it's a volatile situation on and off the pitch, with talk of ownership change and, on the pitch, not getting the results we want to get."

Everton boss Sean Dyche has just been facing the media down at Finch Farm.

He was asked first about any uncertainty over his future as Toffees boss and the club statement which was released shortly before his news conference began.

    Full quotes to come.

  15. 'Liverpool are a tough opponent'published at 14:09 British Summer Time 12 September

Liverpool v Nottingham Forest (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Nottingham Forest

Nuno Espirito SantoImage source, Getty Images

Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo added on Liverpool: "They are a very good team first of all. Very good players and they have started very well. Some things are different [under Arne Slot than under Jurgen Klopp]. Some things are the same, the players, the core is there. But always a very tough team and we know we are going to face a very good opponent."

He was also asked if the club should have more points after a positive start to the season: "it's difficult to say. I think we have always competed very well in all the games. We are able to improve as a team and this is always our main goal. Keep improving and keep putting things right, avoid mistakes. But we are happy with the way we have started."

  16. 'Morato and Ward-Prowse have integrated well'published at 14:04 British Summer Time 12 September

Liverpool v Nottingham Forest (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo added on Morgan Gibbs-White, who the boss knew as a teenager when he worked at Wolves: "He enjoyed all the group stages of the national team, he was a world champion. It was a matter of time.

"I think because of his talent, quality and ambition to play for England, he is delighted. It was always one of his goals. He has achieved it and I hope he repeats it."

The boss also spoke about the team news for Liverpool, specifically on Morato and James Ward-Prowse: "I think they have adapted well to the group. The group have received them very well. They are totally integrated and enjoying their football, preparing themselves for the chance when it comes.

"It is up to us but in terms of adaptation, really well. Easier for James, of course. Morato, like all the players that have joined us, the squad has received them really well."

And on what Ward-Prowse can offer the team: "He is different. His experience and quality, his talent, his knowledge of the game. I think honestly he can help us a lot."

  17. 'We're proud of Gibbs-White'published at 14:00 British Summer Time 12 September

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has faced the press before his side take on Liverpool in the Premier League this Saturday. He was asked about his international break: "Working, we don't stop working."

He added on Morgan Gibbs-White getting his first England cap: "We as a club are very proud, not only of him but of all of the players who have been on international duty. It reflects the hard work they have been doing and the national team recognising they can be used for their country.

    "We are delighted for them."

  18. Everton confirm 'some work to be done' for Textor to complete purchasepublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 12 September

Aston Villa v Everton (Sat, 17:30 BST)

    Everton

We're set to hear from Everton manager Sean Dyche, but in the meantime the club has issued a statement regarding prospective new owner John Textor, who is currently a co-owner of Crystal Palace.

Everton's current owner Farhad Moshiri has granted a period of exclusivity to Textor as he aims to purchase a majority stake and the American businessman has this week spoken to media about the situation.

The statement from Everton, external reads: "The club is aware of the comments made by John Textor in relation to a potential purchase of the club. While positive conversations and progress continues to be made with Mr Textor to formalise any deal with him, there remains some work to be done to complete the transaction.

"Accordingly, the comments made by Mr Textor merely represent his personal view on club matters.

"Everyone at the club is staying focused on providing the best support possible to Sean and the squad as we head into the weekend’s fixture.

"The club will provide updates in respect of new investment when there is material news to communicate to supporters and other stakeholders – and this will be done through official club channels."

    FPL team of the week

    Jean-Philippe MatetaImage source, Getty Images

Erling Haaland, Manchester City, striker, £15.2m - home to Brentford

The only questions around Haaland are whether you are going to captain him and whether you think you can get more points from the assets you could have if you weren't spending £15.2m on a striker.

This team, for example, could have Watkins and Luis Diaz in it and every manager will have the same conundrum.

But on current form it is hard to see Haaland not scoring at least once so why back against him?

Joao Pedro, Brighton, striker, £5.7m - home to Ipswich

You don't need any special insight to look at Brighton's game at home to Ipswich and sense a chance for a decent Seagulls win.

Pedro and his strike partner Danny Welbeck have both had excellent starts to the season and the latter slightly edges it on underlying data.

But Pedro is on penalties which means he gets the nod - both are decent picks this week.

Jean-Philippe Mateta, Crystal Palace, striker, £7.4m - home to Leicester City

If you hadn't guessed already, I really fancy Palace to score a few this week - sorry Leicester!

Mateta hasn't hit form yet this season and Eddie Nketiah is waiting in the wings to take his place but it's more likely both play rather than the Frenchman loses his place.

Palace haven't quite been the same without Michael Olise but they have under-performed their xG this season by a full goal and Mateta has 13 in his past 16 Premier League games.

    FPL team of the week

    Bruno FernandesImage source, Getty Images

Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United, midfielder, £8.4m - away at Southampton

The underlying statistics are screaming out for us to pick Fernandes this week.

The Manchester United talisman has been unlucky to have no returns so far this season.

His xGI is two, he has had eight shots (Salah has had just nine and scored three times), four in the box and two big chances.

Couple that with Southampton's defence, which is bottom six for shots conceded, shots in the box conceded, shots on target conceded, expected goals conceded (xGC) and has given up 13 big chances!

    Points incoming for Bruno.

Mohamed Salah, Liverpool, midfielder, £12.7m - home to Nottingham Forest

Salah is in this team until his form dips or the fixtures change and this week he is captain over Erling Haaland.

Both juggernauts could get double-digit returns, but Salah edges it with his goals earning more points as a midfielder.

Forest are actually a top-three defence so far based on xGC and shots conceded - and they have allowed a league-lowest 12 shots in the box - so there is a small concern they manage to cramp Liverpool's attacking flair.

That, plus a Champions League away game in Milan after this (potential rotation) and a tight budget are why there's no Liverpool triple-up in this team of the week.

Eberechi Eze, Crystal Palace, midfielder, £6.9m - home to Leicester City

Eze is a steal at £6.9m. He scored last time out at Chelsea with maximum bonus and, bar a refereeing howler on the opening day, should have had two goals in three games.

The England player is a shot monster - 15 this season is the second-most of all midfielders - and we think he is on penalties too.

Leicester have conceded 18 shots on target in three games, Eze has five on target - that equals a decent chance of another goal.

Morgan Rogers, Aston Villa, midfielder, £5.1m - home to Everton

Having a Villa asset feels important this week and Rogers is the next best pick if you can't afford Ollie Watkins (£8.9m).

His two-goal performance for England Under-21s in midweek is a sign of his potential.

Unlike most of the players in this week's team, there are no underlying stats to back-up Rogers' inclusion - sometimes you have to go with your gut and the eye test!
