'We are very lucky to have Trafford'published at 21:10 26 December 2023

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany on James Trafford: "I've said it before, but England is very lucky to have a young goalkeeper like him to come through. We are very conscious that at some point we will pay the price for the fact he is still learning but he is learning very quickly. It's about how to handle yourself in this league. We had a few outstanding performances today."
On home form: "Picking up points everywhere is important. We have been good away from home. Our fans have always been there for us. Today was nothing different. The reality is that we are struggling to pick up points at times. But belief is in those moments that we create and there is hard work behind the scenes to get to that point."
Burnley 0-2: What Kompany saidpublished at 21:00 26 December 2023

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany to Amazon Prime on his post-match chat with Jurgen Klopp: "It's Christmas time, we were sharing some stories. It's the first time we've seen each other since I was a player and it's always great to see great people in the game."
On the game: "Look, it's been the story of our season so far. But we need to keep the energy up. If players are missing chances in training you know you are in trouble but they are missing them in games not training. That gives me belief. I don't believe they will keep missing those chances. But we are also learning this league and this level - everything matters.
"We were a little bit too open in the first half. I thought we were still dangerous in transition and didn't manage to make the right decision. Liverpool were quite open at times. They managed to score the goals but we didn't. We had a chance towards the end to have a push and if it goes in then it's 1-1 but the game opens up and Liverpool are so good in those moments."
On potential transfer business: "The injury situation is something we always need to assess. I think the best way to improve for us is to back the players we have and give them belief. I will try to nick some of Jurgen's players off the bench!"
On Liverpool's second disallowed goal: "It's a bigger picture discussion for me. In the overall package we've had these moments against us. I understand Jurgen's opinion and position. But from my perspective, the amount of times we have sat here and said it's cost us points...They got the win."
On results recently and any pressure on him: "I stood here four or five months ago with everyone asking if I was going to stay at Burnley and I signed a long-term deal. There's something special about Burnley. It's a very calm club. We still look forward. I'm excited to work with the team I have and we're prepared to keep moving this team forward. It's a very Lancashire thing. People are very calm here."

Under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool have won all six of their Premier League games on Boxing Day, the most by a manager with a 100% win rate on this day in the competition’s history.
Burnley are the first side in English top-flight history to lose as many as nine of their opening 10 home matches of a season.
Liverpool have won back-to-back Premier League away games against newly promoted sides within a single season for the first time since 2019-20, when they beat all three promoted sides on the road.
Burnley have lost each of their past six Premier League home games against Liverpool. No side has now won more away games at Turf Moor in the competition than the Reds (8, level with Chelsea).
Darwin Nunez scored his 23rd goal for Liverpool in all competitions, but the first to come from outside the box. Before today, each of his last 40 goals in club football had been from inside the penalty area.
Since his first season with Liverpool (2020-21), no player has scored more Premier League goals as a substitute than Diogo Jota (7). His goal was his 50th for Liverpool in all competitions.

Liverpool signalled their title ambitions by going top of the Premier League thanks to a hard-fought victory at relegation-threatened Burnley.
Jurgen Klopp's side have only been beaten once so far this season and went two points clear of Arsenal at the summit despite some wastefulness in front of goal.
The Reds got the perfect start by netting after just six minutes as Darwin Nunez guided in a lovely finish from the edge of the box to end a run of 12 club games without a goal.
The impressive James Trafford was kept busy in the Burnley goal and had already smothered Harvey Elliott's low drive before making a stunning fingertip stop to deny Mohamed Salah.
The wave of attacks from the Reds was unrelenting and Cody Gakpo had a goal disallowed for Nunez's foul on Charlie Taylor, while Salah rattled the crossbar - all before half-time.

Former Chelsea and England striker Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of guests.
For the fixtures over the festive period on 26, 27 and 28 December, he takes on Samuel T Herring, frontman of Baltimore-based synth-pop band Future Islands and an Everton fan.
Sutton's prediction: 0-3
Burnley got a big win at Fulham last time out - and they really needed that. They are still in the bottom three, but at least they are giving themselves a chance of staying up.
Liverpool had 47 shots in their past two games and only scored from one of them.
I actually felt Jurgen Klopp's side were a little unlucky not to beat Arsenal on Saturday, though, and they should have too much firepower for the Clarets. I think they will win this one comfortably.
Samuel's prediction: Ah this just is not fair as an Everton fan! I guess I will have to lose points on this one, but I will do it happily! 1-0

Burnley have won just two of their 16 Premier League games against Liverpool (D2 L12), winning 2-0 at home in August 2016, and 1-0 away in January 2021.
Liverpool have won seven of their eight Premier League away games against Burnley, their highest away win rate (88%) against any side they have faced at least five times on the road in the competition.
Liverpool have won their past six Premier League Boxing Day games, since a 2-1 loss at Manchester City in 2013-14. It is their longest winning run on the day in their league history, and they have never lost when facing a newly promoted team (W6, L1).
Burnley have lost eight of their nine Premier League home games so far this season, winning the other 5-0 against Sheffield United. Only four times in their top-flight history have they lost more at Turf Moor in a single campaign.
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has been directly involved in 15 goals in his last 13 away appearances in the Premier League, scoring five and assisting 10. However, he has not scored or assisted in his last five home and away against Burnley, his longest run without a goal involvement against an opponent in the competition.
'We scored a late equaliser and my hat got stolen!'published at 08:59 26 December 2023

We asked you for your best Burnley memories of football over the festive football period.
Here's what you had to say:
Mondoray: In1973 Burnley beat Liverpool 2-1 with Billy ‘Wizz’ Ingham getting the winner! We did the double over them that year.
Simon: In the late 1970s, we played Blackburn at Ewood Park on Boxing Day. It was my first experience of a professional game and I was donning my brand new claret-and-blue bobble hat with pride. Burnley scored a late equaliser and on the final whistle I recall a wave of upset Blackburn supporters running over to us. As they jumped over, my bobble hat was stolen!
Bob: Boxing Day 1999 and crawling up the M6 to Bury through snow and sleet for the Bury v Burnley game. Not a great day to be a Burnley fan and 4-0 down by half-time. Frozen.
Big Winnie: How about the ridiculous scores on Boxing Day in 1963? Those were the days!! Burnley 6-1 Manchester United 1. West Ham 2-8 Blackburn Rovers. All the scores that day were bonkers! Can't wait for Boxing Day 2023 when it's Burnley 6-1 Liverpool. What are our chances?

Christmas games - a mental challenge and a 'privilege'published at 15:56 24 December 2023
15:56 24 December 2023
The Christmas spirit and the deluge of games that come with it is upon us.
For a player, it’s a crazy time. What’s mad is everything is happening festive wise and you want to enjoy it in some way – like a party for the lads if you can fit it in. It means you feel you have some kind of Christmas.
But the games keep coming, especially at the top end if you’re in several competitions. Then you have the training load and training on Christmas Day. I won’t lie, that is psychologically a challenge not to feel a bit sorry for yourself. Sometimes you think everyone is having a good time, but you have to think how many people would swap with your position. You have to realise and think about what you are doing.
But when you have your kids there playing with their new toys and you have to go training, that is a big sacrifice It’s not about money, it’s just human nature.
What I think they should do is make it compulsory that you cannot train as a club on Christmas Day. That way, no one gets an advantage. What happens is you see is the owners will question why you didn’t train if you lose on Boxing Day.
Boxing Day is brilliant to play on. You can see the bigger crowds and feel the festive spirit. I used to love having Christmas Day off and playing on Boxing Day. But only a few managers will trust you to have that day off, Neil Warnock was one of them.
It’s a tiring spell and I will admit, I have been set to play on Boxing Day and wondered if I’ll get through the game as I’d had too much Christmas dinner.
Playing in this spell, you have to take it as a privilege. You are playing so everyone else is able to watch football at that great time of year.
Your thoughts on Fulham v Burnleypublished at 12:23 24 December 2023
12:23 24 December 2023
We asked you for your thoughts after Fulham took on Burnley in the Premier League.
Here are some of the top comments:
Fulham fans
Jack: Absolute capitulation after we went a goal down. It felt like we forgot where the goal was after that and spent more time going backwards than looking to get back into the game. Some small positives with Iwobi and Bassey continuing to grow into the team, and Cairney showing some teeth to complement his technical ability. But, all in all, not good enough.
Guy: A very flat performance. I felt that Burnley wanted it more. It was a disappointing performance after the great month we have had.
Jeremy: Three word explanation for today’s performance: they were knackered! This game came too soon after Tuesday’s heroics at Everton. I think it’s about time a winter break should be strongly considered. Clubs like ours don’t have the squad depth to cope with seven games in three weeks. Despite today, we should all be proud of what we’ve achieved in 2023.
Burnley fans
Owen: I think given some of the recent performances, today we played really well. Although it took some time to get into the game, we had two great goals and a clean sheet. This win is vital for our season and hopefully we can get a few more and stay up.
Lee: Massive three points! The next two games are horrid so we had to get the maximum today. Hopefully this result will quieten down the "Kompany out" brigade! It's going to be a long hard season but this gives us a little bit of hope.
Alistair: The old cliche, a game of two halves. Same old in the first half but superb in the second! Odobert looks a player and some of these young lads might be finding their feet in the Premier League now. A huge win just when we needed it, with Luton and Sheffield United also getting results. It's getting tight now at the bottom!
Peter: Work rate combined with a good defensive shape and exceptional goalkeeping produced a long overdue win. Vincent seems to have found his strongest team at last. There's just one player I am unhappy with - O'Shea is too slow and a liability in the back four.

Vincent Kompany afforded himself a chuckle in his post-match media duties after Burnley's win over Fulham. It was pointed out to the Burnley boss that while it was their third victory of the season they had only, thus far, beaten newly-promoted sides before this win.
So there is perhaps some significance in a hard-fought success over Fulham, which also yielded a clean sheet.
Burnley's survival hopes have already been written off in some quarters, but there is a quiet determination that they can still turn things around.
That will only happen if Burnley get their house in order at Turf Moor, after one win and eight defeats in nine games - the worst home record in the Premier League.
The Clarets would be 13th in the Premier League if only away results counted, with seven points from nine games.

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It feels like something we have deserved for a while. We keep going and today we kept going. A good team performance and a good result for our fans too.
"There was a spell in the first half when we gave the momentum away and, on loose balls and second balls, we weren't who we are usually. We gave it up. In the second half, we were outstanding doing that and that earned a goal.
"I am happy with the win. My biggest thing is we got three points. The team deserved it."

Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I thought we were brilliant. In the first half, we weren't at our best. We came in at half-time and the manager and staff gave us some points on how we could really punish them. We scored two brilliant goals.
"I'm delighted with the clean sheet but more delighted with the three points. The whole team really values wins and clean sheets. We've never really been short of confidence as a team.
"We believe in the whole process. The performances have been there and it was only a matter of time before the results came."

Burnley have won three consecutive away games in all competitions against Fulham for the very first time. They have also won two Premier League games in a row against the Cottagers for the first time.
Fulham have lost a Premier League home game, against a promoted side, without scoring, for the first time since March 2012 (0-3 against Swansea City).
Fulham had 19 shots against Burnley, their most in a Premier League game without scoring since October 2022 against Everton (24 shots).
At 19 years and 25 days old, Wilson Odobert is the youngest Burnley player to both score and assist in a single Premier League game. Only nine players have ever done so at a younger age in the competition’s history.
Jay Rodriguez made his 250th appearance in the Premier League (109 for Burnley, 104 for Southampton and 37 for West Brom). He is the first player to reach this milestone while playing for Burnley since Ashley Westwood in March 2021.

Wilson Odobert's stunning goal helped Burnley clinch their third Premier League win of the season with a hard-fought victory at Fulham.
French winger Odobert curled the ball home in style two minutes into the second half to put the Clarets ahead. Sander Berge then arrowed in a second for Vincent Kompany's side with a low strike into the corner of the net.
Trafford was comfortably the busier of the two goalkeepers throughout, and he made two vital saves in the first half with the scoreline goalless. The England Under-21 international did well to keep out Harry Wilson's effort at the near post after a jinking run and pushed a deflected Alex Iwobi shot wide of the post.
Burnley began the second half on the front foot and their early endeavour was rewarded with a fine opening goal. Odobert exchanged a neat one-two with Lyle Foster and then opened up his body to spectacularly curl the ball beyond the diving Bernd Leno.
From there Burnley had a spring in their step and Norway midfielder Berge, allowed freedom by a Fulham defence in retreat, fired in a second from the edge of the box.
Fulham piled on the pressure but could not find a way past Trafford, who saved well from Timothy Castagne late on.
The result helped Burnley, bottom at kick-off, leapfrog Sheffield United up to 19th place - four points adrift of safety, as Fulham slipped down to 12th.

Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of guests.
For this weekend's games, he takes on Felix White, guitarist with 86TVs and a Fulham fan.
Sutton's prediction: 2-0
Fulham will be without striker Raul Jimenez after his red card against Newcastle, but I don't think they will struggle for goals without him.
I feel like I say the same thing every week about Burnley but they aren't going to change.
They need something badly from this game, but they look like a team that just aren't quite good enough for the Premier League.
Felix's prediction: 2-0
This is the big one. I'm going to be there with Tailenders co-host Jimmy Anderson, who supports Burnley and, I mean this sincerely, we will have the greatest privilege in football because we will be sitting in the actual cottage at Craven Cottage to watch the game.
The dressing rooms are directly underneath it and it's like Fulham Valhalla in there. You feel like you're going to be walking past the ghosts of our great players of the past. It's like the spirits of our legends live in that cottage.
Burnley are struggling, Fulham are flying and we are buzzing after Wednesday, so I think the mood will be celebratory.
