  3. Burnley 5-0 Sheffield Utd: Analysispublished at 23:40 2 December 2023

Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport at Turf Moor

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany has billed this game as "massive" for both teams in the build-up and it was his side who kept cool heads with a fabulous victory as they look to kick-start a faltering campaign.

The Clarets had not collected a Premier League point since winning 2-1 at Luton on 3 October, and this highly impressive showing two months on was also against a side who came up with them from the Championship.

Jay Rodriguez's early goal put them on the front foot and having dropped 14 points from winning positions this season - the most by any top-flight team - they managed to push on and take apart their opponents in a calm and assured manner.

The veteran striker could have had another in the 10th minute but could not find the target with his strike - Jacob Bruun Larsen, though, did roll home a calm finish to put his side in command.

Burnley popped the ball around confidently thereafter and there were no signs of the individual mistakes that have blighted them so much this term, as they took their chances in the second half for a valuable triumph.

  4. Burnley 5-0 Sheffield United: What Rodriguez saidpublished at 18:02 2 December 2023

Burnley goalscorer Jay Rodriguez speaking to BBC Sport: "It was a big game, we knew it would be tough. We know we need to keep progressing. We deserve this win.

"The early goal settled the nerves a bit. I'm delighted, we fully deserve it.

"It was a great performance. Hopefully this is a step in the right direction. It was important to start off really well.

"It [five different goalscorers] is a massive help, it's massive for our confidence [that] anyone can score at any time.

"The big performance was Traff [goalkeeper James Trafford]. I thought he was man of the match, he controlled the tempo."

  5. Burnley 5-0 Sheffield United: What Kompany saidpublished at 17:47 2 December 2023

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany speaking to BBC Sport after the victory: "I think the guys have deserved it, they have performed well for a while. This league is brutal.

"I haven't felt the nerves [from the players]. I could barely contain them, they were raring to go. The frustration of last week didn't turn into negatvity. It turned into 'we will show people'.

"It's only a win, but it's an important moment. I think it's a blend of new players and making sure there was no reason to change everything from what we did last season. We're trying to be more solid and as aggressive as we were last season. We've been dangerous in other games but we've needed to tighten up.

"I think the team can progress a lot, the players are constantly getting better. On the training pitch, the habits are of such a high standard. Hopefully this is the starting point."

  6. Burnley 5-0 Sheffield United: Key statspublished at 17:37 2 December 2023

    • Jay Rodriguez scored after 15.8 seconds for Burnley, the 15th fastest goal in Premier League history. The goal came 10 years and one day after he scored after 13.7 seconds for Southampton against Chelsea, the 12th fastest goal in Premier League history.

    • Burnley’s 5-0 win against Sheffield United represents the joint-largest margin of victory in Premier League history by a team starting the day bottom of the table.

    • Oli McBurnie became the first Sheffield United player to be sent off twice in a single Premier League season, after also being sent off against Tottenham in September.

    • Burnley ended a run of nine consecutive defeats at Turf Moor in the Premier League. They are the last of the 92 clubs in England’s top four tiers to win a home league game this season.

    • Sheffield United have lost 26 of their last 31 Premier League away games (W2 D3). They have also kept just one clean sheet across those 31 matches.

  7. Burnley 5-0 Sheffield United: What Bruun Larsen saidpublished at 17:13 2 December 2023

Burnley goalscorer Jacob Bruun Larsen speaking after the game: "We needed that a lot. We were all devastated last weekend, it was a tough defeat, but we showed character today. A great reaction.

"When you go 2-0 up that fast, you get everyone with you. I'm proud of the team and proud of myself. [We will] enjoy tonight and tomorrow [we will] prepare for the next game.

"We have a lot of quality and potential in the squad. We just tried to do the things we also did last week, and obviously be more consistent with it. The game isn't just 80 minutes.

"We were in control after 2-0. A lot of teams in our situation would've been satisfied with that but you saw the players on the pitch wanted to score. You saw the gaffer [Vincent Kompany] rushing to the ball. That's how we train."

  8. Full-time: Burnley 5-0 Sheffield Unitedpublished at 16:58 2 December 2023

    Have your say

Burnley thrashed 10-man Sheffield United to record a significant Premier League win and pile huge pressure on Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom.

The Clarets had lost their past six league games, and all seven at home this term, but moved off the bottom of the table with a priceless second victory of the season over their fellow relegation candidates.

Striker Rodriguez's stooping header from Charlie Taylor's pinpoint cross was the fastest in the top flight this season and gave Burnley a blistering start and a lead which they did not relinquish.

On-loan winger Jacob Bruun Larsen doubled their lead with a cool finish after latching on to Dara O'Shea's long ball over the top as Burnley took total control.

The Blades were visibly frustrated and saw Oli McBurnie sent off for two moments of madness - the striker was fortunate to receive only a yellow card for an elbow into the face of O'Shea, but he inexplicably repeated the act in a separate challenge and was dismissed before half-time.

Burnley were dominant in the second period as Zeki Amdouni confidently drilled in a low finish, Luca Koleosho smashed in at the near post after hitting the woodwork and Josh Brownhill struck a fifth.

Burnley leapfrog their opponents into 18th place, two points adrift of safety, while Sheffield United remain just a point off the foot of the table.

  9. 'They are struggling, but you can see the positives'published at 16:03 1 December 2023

    The Footballer's Football podcast graphic

West Ham United forward Michail Antonio believes you can see positive signs from Burnley despite their struggles this season.

Antonio missed the Hammers' 2-1 win at Turf Moor last weekend through injury and says the defeat for Vincent Kompany's side after leading for so long will be tough to take.

He told the Footballer's Football Podcast: "Away at Burnley is always a hard game. They are a solid team playing good football. They are struggling in the Premier League right now but you can see the positives they have and the qualities they have.

"With the tactics they are playing, it is a hard loss. I’ve been in those when you lose it in the final minutes and it is a bitter pill to swallow. They needed to try and get that second goal to get some breathing space.

"As soon as we scored on 86 minutes, the situation Burnley are in down in the bottom three, they will be thinking 'we need to try and keep this point at least'. It builds the pressure but it happens to a number of teams.

"When you are in the lead for a certain amount of time and then it goes to 1-1, the game could go either way. It could be one free-kick, one mistake, anything could happen. The team that was in the lead does go under pressure and try and hold on.

"A lot of the time it backfires, or the team with the momentum goes and scores because it feels like the wind is behind them. Every time you kick the ball away the wind is bringing it back to you."

  10. Burnley v Sheffield United: Sutton's predictionspublished at 13:53 1 December 2023

    Sutton's predictions

Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of guests.

This week, he takes on All Elite Wrestling (AEW) star Claudio Castagnoli.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-1

Who on earth do I go with here?

Burnley have the worst home record in the Premier League, with seven defeats out of seven, while Sheffield United boast the worst away record, with one point from six games so far.

I keep saying the Clarets will get a draw when they play at Turf Moor, and I keep being wrong, but I don't really have much choice this time - I don't really want to back Burnley, but Sheffield United were so bad last week that I don't want to back them either.

Bournemouth beat the Blades 3-1 at Bramall Lane last weekend, but they could have absolutely wiped the floor with them - the scoreline flattered Paul Heckingbottom's side.

So I am going for a draw. If I'm wrong and there is a winner, then it could be a problem for whichever manager does lose.

It is one thing being beaten by the top teams but losing to the teams in and around you is damaging, and would really increase the pressure on Heckingbottom, or Burnley boss Vincent Kompany.

    Claudio's prediction: 0-2

  11. 'It’s a game that Burnley have to win'published at 12:34 1 December 2023

    Michael Brown

Burnley v Sheffield United is a big, big game. Both sides desperately need to get a result. When you’re at home like Burnley are, they have got to go and get that win.

It looked like they were going to do it against West Ham and then they lost the game so it’s just about getting one over the line. If they don’t win it demoralises their confidence because it's against a team who you are next to in the table. If you’re not going to win those games at home then it’s going to be very difficult.

I said they have a good run of games up to Christmas and this is the second one of those. They showed promise in the first one but this is a game that Burnley have to win really.

There is still hope for both teams in the relegation fight. The saving grace is Everton’s big points deduction. At that point you have to say they have a chance and are back in it. Luton are picking up results and Bournemouth are sneaking away, but everything is still around at the moment and nobody is relegated at this moment in time.

Both Vincent Kompany and Paul Heckingbottom are still in their jobs because everybody in the two football clubs sees exactly what they are like. They see how much work they put in, their aura around the training ground, how they conduct themselves.

I know both of them and I see their work ethic. They have good support staff, good understanding with the players and that is the reason. Clubs are trying their best with longevity to continue the journey they are on. That’s the reason they haven’t gone and they believe they can take the club forward. But things can change at any moment and you are never safe.

  12. This is a place where things will turn - Kompanypublished at 08:46 1 December 2023

    Vincent KompanyImage source, Getty Images

Vincent Kompany believes his Burnley side has enough to survive the drop this season despite sitting bottom of the Premier League.

The Clarets have lost their past six league games, scoring just four and conceding 16, but Kompany said: "If ever there is a story written in the future about this club, it will be about how differently it behaves in moments like this.

"I can really say I don't think I've ever encountered anything like this. There's a total focus on what we need to do. People are calm - people are together.

"That gives me the feeling this is a place where things will turn, but it's got to happen on the pitch."

Kompany described Saturday's home game with Sheffield United as "massive" for both clubs.

No side in English league history has ever lost their opening eight home games of a season.

  13. Kompany v Heckingbottom: Who's more at risk of the sack?published at 07:30 1 December 2023

Burnley and Sheffield United meet on Saturday having picked up just one win each in the Premier League this season - but the pressure on each manager appears to be different.

Podcasters Natalie Bromley and Phil Ridley tell The Football News Show what the future could hold for Vincent Kompany and Paul Heckingbottom, and why the outcome of this game is more crucial for the Blades boss.

  14. Kompany on playing well, transfer plans and 'massive' Blades gamepublished at 15:10 30 November 2023

    Srosh Khan, BBC Sport

Vincent Kompany has been speaking to the media before Burnley's game against Sheffield United on Saturday.

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • On the West Ham defeat: "It was pretty cruel to finish the game this way and obviously you carry it with you for a couple of days. One of the things we have always been good at is pressing the reset button."

    • Kompany thinks there is no comparison between the Premier League and Championship: "Please don't [compare]. It's completely different. You always try to find a shortcut. In the last game we played we needed to find a way to win as that's a key component you have to do at this level."

    • On whether he has been soul-searching after the results: "I think you get tested on things you preach sometimes. If you preach resilience and mental discipline, you get confronted with that in moments like this because for 24 or 48 hours after the game it is not great. But, in the end you're in this job because you love everything that comes with it."

    • He said bringing new players into the squad is a "necessity": "Like every team that comes up, you are in that little between zone where you're pushing to become a Premier League team but there's still the threat of relegation. One thing you can't do is go and spend all of your money on players that you can't resell."

    • However, he is unsure what business will be conducted in January: "It depends if we can find the right fit. Any club in our position has to be open to that but let's see what happens between now and the start of the transfer window."

    • He wants cohesion from his side: "There is no hiding away from the results but I have to say the team has been playing really well. I always look forward to seeing the team play as they put up a real fight."

    • The game with the Blades is "massive" for both teams: "It’s that kind of fixture - there's no need to say it any different than it is. It's part of what you have to face in a career. For these players who are going to be taking to the field, these are the games that make you."

    • Sheffield United have lost 25 of their past 30 Premier League away games (W2 D3).

  16. 'Managers with freedom will succeed' - Holloway on sticking with bossespublished at 18:25 28 November 2023

Only once in the past 10 years have we waited until the new year before the first managerial sacking in the Premier League. So with no bosses getting the boot so far in 2023-24, what is going on?

Former Blackpool and Crystal Palace boss Ian Holloway tells The Football News Show that teams coming up with a distinctive style is contributing to the low attrition rate and adds why he believes longevity is beneficial for all clubs.

  17. 'There is a naivety about us that other teams in the league are exposing'published at 12:02 28 November 2023

    Burnley fans voice graphic

Natalie Bromley, No Nay Never podcast, external

    I have a problem.

I need to find another, slightly different, way to say that Burnley are having a really terrible season and it's making me miserable. And I don't even know where to start.

Ten defeats. Ten. We haven't seen us pick up a point at home yet.

I honestly didn't see this coming.

We were so much better last year than we are now. Sure, it's a hard league, but so much of the positive progress we made last season has disintegrated.

I don't see the same intensity, fire, and swagger of that title-winning side. We are facing tougher opponents, but we are also struggling to adapt to changes in tactics and strategies.

There were glimmers of improvements during the West Ham game. Moments of confidence. We looked more solid at the back. We restricted them to limited half-chances. Then we switched off. Made unfathomable substitutions. And threw away a brilliant chance to get our first home win of the season.

It feels uncomfortable saying this, but there is a naivety about us that other teams in the league are exposing.

Up next is Sheffield United at home. If that is anything less than our first home win, survival is likely to be out of the question.

  18. Your views on Saturday's gamepublished at 12:05 27 November 2023

    Your views banner

We asked for your thoughts on Saturday's match between Burnley and West Ham.

Here are some of your comments:

    Burnley fans

Bob: It’s becoming an increasingly unfortunate pattern, we play well enough (at times) but still can’t win a game! Barring a miracle, I’m beginning to doubt if we can stay up.

Mike: A better performance all round but the risk of losing late on was always present with the lack of another goal from Burnley. We have no striker and we're missing a centre-half with commanding presence. I was in corporate and the groans are becoming louder and tainted with a little anger.

Nigel: Our goalkeeper is a great shot stopper but he needs to take command of his six-yard box. He should come out and compete for crossed balls more. Too many goals are conceded with him rooted to his goal line.

Andy: Kompany as an ex-international defender cannot get the defence sorted. Once again his substitutions were unnecessary and foolish. Until then we were OK but after were a complete mess and totally disjointed. Kompany must go. He is too naïve to be a top-class manager.

    West Ham fans

Ian: Great result but this shouldn't hide from the deficiencies in the team. Performance in the first-half was poor. With no pace up front we were left to play a slow, pedestrian game. Played better in the second-half with the introduction of Mubama, who gave us presence up front and resulted in a goal. We were lucky today but I will happily take the points.

Mick: Got out of jail again - 86 minutes of rubbish to endure before even a point looked salvageable. Burnley for a long time wanted it more and that shouldn’t be. That the fans have to sing his name for 30 minutes before Moyes give Mubama the chance says it all. Grateful for the points but these last gasp efforts are not a recipe for continued success.

Faith: It looked like another frustrating away loss but praise to Moyes for bringing on the subs that changed the game. Hopefully we will see more of Divin now, he certainly looked confident and mature. A win is a win but we really do need to play for whole games and press a bit more.

Nick: Another poor game. Lucky to get the win. Need to learn teamwork! They all want to be the hero. Ings - why oh why does Moyes give him game time? Offers nothing.
